Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive view of the best and the latest work in functional programming. It is the proceedings of a major international conference and contains 30 papers selected from 126 submitted. A number of themes emerge. One is a growing interest in types: powerful type systems or type checkers supporting overloading, coercion, dynamic types, and incremental inference; linear types to optimize storage, and polymorphic types to optimize semantic analysis. The hot topic of partial evaluation is well represented: techniques for higher-order binding-time analysis, assuring termination of partial evaluation, and improving the residual programs a partial evaluator generates. The thorny problem of manipulating state in functional languages is addressed: one paper even argues that parallel programs with side-effects can be "more declarative" than purely functional ones. Theoretical work covers a new model of types based on projections, parametricity, a connection between strictness analysis and logic, and a discussion of efficient implementations of the lambda-calculus. The connection with computer architecture and a variety of other topics are also addressed.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Third Conference on Functional Programming Languages and Computer Architecture held in Portland, Oregon, September 14-16, 1987. This conference was a successor to two highly successful conferences on the same topics held at Wentworth, New Hampshire, in October 1981 and in Nancy, in September 1985. Papers were solicited on all aspects of functional languages and particularly implementation techniques for functional programming languages and computer architectures to support the efficient execution of functional programs. The contributions collected in this volume show that many issues regarding the implementation of Functional Programming Languages are now far better understood.

Book excerpt: This book on functional programming, reflecting current research being undertaken by the Declarative Language Architecture Section at Imperial College, show how functional programming languages can result in concise and formally-correct programs which are elegant, and can easily exploit the parallelism of multi-processor machines.
Book Synopsis Programming Language Concepts by : Peter Sestoft
Download or read book Programming Language Concepts written by Peter Sestoft and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a functional programming language (F#) as a metalanguage to present all concepts and examples, and thus has an operational flavour, enabling practical experiments and exercises. It includes basic concepts such as abstract syntax, interpretation, stack machines, compilation, type checking, garbage collection, and real machine code. Also included are more advanced topics on polymorphic types, type inference using unification, co- and contravariant types, continuations, and backwards code generation with on-the-fly peephole optimization. This second edition includes two new chapters. One describes compilation and type checking of a full functional language, tying together the previous chapters. The other describes how to compile a C subset to real (x86) hardware, as a smooth extension of the previously presented compilers. The examples present several interpreters and compilers for toy languages, including compilers for a small but usable subset of C, abstract machines, a garbage collector, and ML-style polymorphic type inference. Each chapter has exercises. Programming Language Concepts covers practical construction of lexers and parsers, but not regular expressions, automata and grammars, which are well covered already. It discusses the design and technology of Java and C# to strengthen students’ understanding of these widely used languages.
