Book excerpt: Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide (PPO) containing pendant mesogenic units separated from the polymer main-chain through spacers of three to ten methylene units were synthesized and characterized. The synthetic pathway used for the chemical modification of PPO involved the radical bromination of its methyl groups followed by phase transfer catalyzed esterification of the resulting bromobenzyl groups with potassium omega-(4-oxybiphenyl)alkanoates and potassium omega-(4-methoxy-4'-oxybiphenyl)-alkanoates. Only the resulting polymers containing ten methylene units as spacer and 4,4'-methoxybiphenyl as mesogen present thermotropic liquid crystalline mesomorphism. Keywords: Side-chain thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers.

Book excerpt: Copolymerization represents the simplest synthetic technique which can be used to tailor make phase transitions of both main chain and side chain liquid crystalline polymers. Indeed, copolymerization was frequently employed to manipulate the phase transitions of side chain liquid crystalline polymers. However, most of the results reported in the literature can be considered only in a qualitative way, since there are only very few cases in which information about both copolymer composition and molecular weight are available. A general classification of side chain liquid crystalline copolymers was recently discussed in a review article. There are two main classes of side chain liquid crystalline copolymers. The first one refers to copolymers containing pairs of structural units with and without mesogenic units. The second class refers to copolymers based on pairs of structural units containing mesogenic units in each structural unit.

Book excerpt: The design of novel, complex and tailored macromolecules that present and combine unique features such as stimuli responsive, self-assembly and hierarchical architectures for applications in fields ranging from healthcare, energy to engineering, is one of the major challenges that need to be addressed by a polymer chemist. One way to address this, is through the combination of monomers with desirable roles such as stimuli responsive (liquid crystalline), solubility (polar or non-polar), targeting and payload release functional monomers. Polymerization techniques such as controlled and living polymerization enables the regulation of the connectivity and composition of these diverse monomers in the synthesis of block, random or gradient copolymers. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) majorly employed in most of the work in this thesis, is a robust living polymerization technique which delivers highly functionalized block or random copolymers that serves as nanotemplates (chapter 2), nanoporous membranes for separation (chapter 3), photonic crystals (chapter 4), shape memory devices (chapter 5), stimuli responsive optical materials (chapter 6), drug delivery vehicles and imaging agents (chapter 7). This dissertation focuses on a new platform for the synthesis of novel liquid crystalline polymers, their architectures, morphologies, properties and applications. The control of composition and polymer architecture is key in tuning the properties of copolymers for desired applications. Side-chain Liquid Crystalline Copolymers (SCLPs) which combines the basic properties of conventional polymers and liquid crystals, exhibit low viscosity, unique self-assembly as compared to linear copolymer counterparts due to reduced entanglements. Liquid crystalline block copolymers (LCBCPs) that comprises of brush-like semicrystalline or amorphous units and comblike side chain liquid crystalline moieties will be the center of focus in this dissertation in chapter 2, chapter 4 and part of chapter 7 due to formation of hierarchical structures as a result of two competing processes: (a) microphase separation by the copolymer superstructure and (b) orientational ordering by liquid crystalline mesogens. This supramolecular cooperative assembly leads into a well-defined interface with liquid crystalline ordering in the range of 3 -10nm nanostructures and block microphase segregation of 10- 100nm microstructures. The first part of this dissertation focuses on the understanding of liquid crystalline brush-like block copolymers self-assembly, phase behavior and morphology as a function of copolymer composition and molecular weight. Here, I describe the synthesis and characterization of norbornene functionalized side chain liquid crystalline brush-like block copolymers, where one of the blocks comprises of cyanobiphenyl liquid crystalline mesogens with twelve methylene spacer and the other semi-crystalline polylactide (PLA) side chains. The self-assembly of these LC block copolymers into liquid crystalline mesophase provides the handle for magnetic alignment of the formed LCBBCs superstructures (chapter 7). The displayed morphologies such as hexagonally packed PLA cylinders in the LC matrix is put into use in the creation of functional nanoporous membranes for water purification and heavy metal sequestering (chapter 3). The high molecular weight of this LCBBCs assemble into photonic crystals of large domain sizes with different optical properties (chapter 4). In the second part of the dissertation we explore harnessing of stimuli responsive functional cholesteric random copolymers for multifunctional elastomeric platform and optical materials that cover a wide range from visible to near infrared (NIR) of electromagnetic spectrum. Overall, understanding the structure-properties of these liquid crystalline polymers leads to various applications such as membranes for separation, optics, sensors and drug delivery.

Book excerpt: Functionalized polymers are macromolecules to which chemically bound functional groups are attached which can be used as catalysts, reagents, protective groups, etc. Functionalized polymers have low cost, ease of processing and attractive features for functional organic molecules. Chemical reactions for the introduction of functional groups in polymers and the conversion of functional groups in polymers depend on different properties. Such properties are of great importance for functionalization reactions for possible applications of reactive polymers. This book deals with the synthesis and design of various functional polymers, the modification of preformed polymer backbones and their various applications.

Book excerpt: Diblock copolymers with well defined block length yield ordered phase separation. Morphology of the microphase separation is controllable by varying the weight ratio of the two blocks and the length of each block. If one of the blocks is a side chain liquid crystalline polymer (SCLCP), microphase separated systems with liquid crystalline microphases may be realized. Such systems are of fundamental as well as practical interest. The effect of size and type of the liquid crystalline microphase transition is one of the fundamental questions. This effect is recently investigated by the polymer system in which low molecular weight liquid crystals are dispersed. Different from the low molecular weight liquid crystals dispersed systems, the block copolymer can give several types of microdomains (lamellae, cylinders, or spheres).

Book excerpt: Three segmented main-chain thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers (TLCPs) functionalized with nitrogen-containing heterocyclic groups were synthesized; namely PyHQ12 having pendent pyridyl group, PABP having side-chain azopyridyl group with flexible spacer, and PTBP containing side-chain terpyridine group with flexible spacer. The principles of specific interactions were applied to prepare supramolecular structures and organoclay or clay nanocomposites based on these functional TLCPs. Three combined main-chain/side-chain liquid-crystalline polymers (MCSCLCPs) were prepared via hydrogen bonding or ionic interactions based on PyHQ12 and PABP. The presence of hydrogen bonds in self-assembled PyHQ12-7CNCOOH and PABP-AA, and the presence of ionic interactions in self-assembled PABP-TSA, which exist above their respective clearing temperatures, were confirmed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the thermal transitions in each MCSCLCP were determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the mesophase structures of each self-assembled MCSCLCP were characterized using polarized optical microscopy (POM) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). PyHQ12 was observed to be very effective in exfoliating organoclay (Cloisite 30B) aggregates, because of the formation of hydrogen bonds, as determined by in situ FTIR spectroscopy, between the pendent pyridyl group in PyHQ12 and the hydroxyl groups in the surfactant MT2EtOH residing at the surface of Cloisite 30B. Thus, functionality in TLCP is necessary to obtain highly dispersed organoclay nanocomposites, but at the same time there is a possibility to lose some degree of liquid crystallinity in the TLCP, due to the proximity of the pendent pyridyl group to the mesogenic main-chain backbone. Thus, another functional TLCP, PABP having side-chain azopyridyl group with flexible spacer, was synthesized. It has been found that the liquid crystallinity of PABP in the organoclay nanocomposites was more or less intact and yet organoclay (Cloisite 30B) aggregates were very well dispersed, which was attributed to the fact that the pyridyl group in the side-chain azopyridine of PABP is located sufficiently far away from the mesogenic main chain. The rheological properties of functional TLCP/organoclay nanocomposites were also investigated. A unique polymer/ruthenium complex [RuII(PTBP)(6TPy)](PF6)2 based on PTBP was used to prepare natural clay (Montmorillonite, MMT) nanocomposite. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy indicate that MMT has a high degree of exfoliation in the matrix of PTBP/ruthenium complex. UV-vis spectroscopy and FTIR spectroscopy show that the driving force for exfoliating MMT in PTBP/ruthenium complex is attributable to the Coulombic interactions between the positively charged ruthenium center in the side chain of the polymer and the negatively charged clay surfaces.

Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis was to prepare thermoresponsive PEG-based homopolymers and copolymers by combination of cobalt-mediated catalytic chain-transfer polymerization (CCTP) and thiol-ene "click" chemistry and prepare well-defined glycopolymers via "living" polymerization and "click" chemistry. The effect of different catalysts for the nucleophilic mediated thiol-ene reaction was investigated using model compounds, both monomers and oligomers obtained by CCTP. Different catalysts, including pentylamine and hexylamine (primary amines), triethylamine (tertiary amine), and two different phosphines, dimethylphenylphosphine (DMPP) and tris(2-carboxyethyl) phosphine (TCEP), were investigated in the presence of different thiols. The optimum reaction conditions for nucleophile mediated thiol-ene click reactions were investigated. Thermoresponsive PEG-based homopolymers and copolymers of OEGMEMA obtained by CCT were modified using thiol-ene click chemistry with a variety of different functional thiol compounds to yield functional thermoresponsive polymers in high yield. The effect of different solvent systems for based catalyzed thiol-ene reaction was investigated in the presence of different functional thiols. The ATRP polymerization of TMS-PgMA and TIPS-PgMA and ROP polymerization of aliphatic polyester were investigated. A maleimide functional initiator was used in order to achieve post conjugation of nanoparticles for drug delivery. Moreover, the disulfide based bifunctional initiator was introduced into the midpoint of the polymer chain, which could break down to afford the corresponding polymer chain with thiol end group under the reducing condition. The thiol-terminated polymer was also post-functionalized via thiol-ene click chemistry. In addition, the aliphatic polycarbonate is a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer, which is widely used in medical and pharmaceutical applications. The subsequent introduction of sugar moiety to the reactive polymer chain via CuAAC click reaction and then the interactions between glycopolymers and lectins were investigated by Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation (QCM-D). The controlled SET-LRP polymerization of TMS-PgMA and SET-RAFT polymerization PgMA with the intact alkyne at ambient temperature were investigated. A maleimide functional initiator and CPDB, as the chain transfer agent have been employed. The introduction of maleimide moiety was to allow for post polymerization conjugation to peptides via reaction with cysteines. The subsequent introduction of sugar azides to click with the reactive polymer containing alkyne group and the glycopolymers through CuAAC was also investigated. The glycopolymer has been successfully prepared combining the SET-LRP/SET-RAFT and CuAAc click chemistry at ambient temperature.

Book excerpt: Norbornene derivatives containing 4'-cyano-4-biphenyloxy mesogens linked to the norbornene through methylene groups (n = 3-7, 9-12) and an ester were polymerized by Mo(CHR)(NAr)(O-t-Bu)2 (Ar = 2,6-C6H3-i-Pr2, R = t-Bu) in a living manner. Polymers in which n = 3 were amorphous, whereas all other polymers (n = 4-7, 9-12) displayed enantiotropic nematic mesophases that were independent of the molecular weight. Polymers having 9-12 methylene spacers did not undergo side chain crystallization and did not show an odd-even effect, in contrast to analogous polymers containing 4'-methoxy-4-biphenyloxy mesogens, which exhibited side chain crystallization when n> 8 and an odd-even effect when n
