Book excerpt: In recent years, the remarkable advances in medical imaging instruments have increased their use considerably for diagnostics as well as planning and follow-up of treatment. Emerging from the fields of radiology, medical physics and engineering, medical imaging no longer simply deals with the technology and interpretation of radiographic images. The limitless possibilities presented by computer science and technology, coupled with engineering advances in signal processing, optics and nuclear medicine have created the vastly expanded field of medical imaging. The Handbook of Medical Imaging is the first comprehensive compilation of the concepts and techniques used to analyze and manipulate medical images after they have been generated or digitized. The Handbook is organized in six sections that relate to the main functions needed for processing: enhancement, segmentation, quantification, registration, visualization as well as compression storage and telemedicine. * Internationally renowned authors(Johns Hopkins, Harvard, UCLA, Yale, Columbia, UCSF) * Includes imaging and visualization * Contains over 60 pages of stunning, four-color images

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear cardiac imaging is the diagnostic technique of using radiology and chemical markers to track cardiac performance. These imaging studies provide a wide range of information about the heart, including how much the heart contracts, the amount of blood supply to the heart and whether parts of the heart muscle are alive or dead. This is essential information for cardiologists, and nuclear imaging has become an increasingly important part of the cardiologist's armoury of diagnostic techniques. Iskandrian's text has become a leading book in the field and the fourth edition will continue the tradition. The text is updated throughout to reflect the many advances in the field, and, as a new feature, each chapter concludes with a question and answer session on important and difficult clinical issues.

Book excerpt: Conventional nuelear medieine proeedures study the dis tribution of radiolabelled eompounds (radiopharmaeeutieals) in the body under physiologieal as well as under pathologieal eonditions. Beeause of their ability to visua lise and to quantify the distribution of radiopharmaeeuti eals within the body by means of external deteetors, nuelear medieine teehniques are basieally non invasive and funetion oriented. The spatial variation of the traeer distribution in the field of view, or the ehange in distribution during a time interval are interpreted as representing speeifie phy siologie or pathophysiologie processes. As eompared to other diagnostie imaging teehniques, the spatial resolution of seintigraphie images is rather poor, their temporal resolu tion is good. Faetors that will therefore determine the ultimate diag nostie value of a seintigraphie study inelude 1. The speeifieity of the labelled eompounds for the process under study, 2. The resolution in time and space of the instrumentation, and its ability of measuring quantitatively tissue aetivity eoneentrations, 3. The formulation of physiologieal or pathophysiologieal models from whieh the distribution of the traeer ean be predieted. 2 While interpreting nuclear medicine data, the interrelations between these factors should permanently remain under consi deration. The generalised use of minicomputers has resulted in major advances in information processing in nuclear medicine imaging procedures. Central to this is image digitisation.

Book excerpt: This book summarizes the proceedings of the 10th international conference on Infonnation Pro cessing in Medical Imaging (IPMI-lO), held in June, 1987, in Zeist, The Netherlands. IPMI is a biennial conference, organized alternately in Europe and North America. The subject of the conference is the use of physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering in the of medical images. The intent of the conference is to fonnation, processing and interpretation provide a forum where new ideas and results of research in medical imaging can be presented and amply discussed. Accordingly, the programme can comprise only a limited number of papers. The scientific committee of IPMI-lO selected 41 papers for presentation, although a total of 102 extended abstracts of on the average high quality had been submitted. All selected contri butions are included in these proceedings. During of the preparations of the conference the organizers received the tragic news of the death of Francois Erbsmann, the initiator of IPMI, and organizer of the first conference in 1969 in Brussels. Francois always emphasized that the backbone of the IPMI meetings should be promising young and active researchers rather than established scientists in the field. As an appreciation of this idea, and in thankful remembrance of Francois' stimulating work, the IPMI-board has taken the initiative to present the Francois Erbsmann prize for the most significant contribution to the conference by a young investigator.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By showing us the human brain at work, PET (positron emission tomography) scans are subtly--and sometimes not so subtly--transforming how we think about our minds. Picturing Personhood follows this remarkable and expensive technology from the laboratory into the world and back. It examines how PET scans are created and how they are being called on to answer myriad questions with far-reaching implications: Is depression an observable brain disease? Are criminals insane? Do men and women think differently? Is rationality a function of the brain? Based on interviews, media analysis, and participant observation at research labs and conferences, Joseph Dumit analyzes how assumptions designed into and read out of the experimental process reinforce specific notions about human nature. Such assumptions can enter the process at any turn, from selecting subjects and mathematical models to deciding which images to publish and how to color them. Once they leave the laboratory, PET scans shape social debates, influence courtroom outcomes, and have positive and negative consequences for people suffering mental illness. Dumit follows this complex story, demonstrating how brain scans, as scientific objects, contribute to our increasing social dependence on scientific authority. The first book to examine the cultural ramifications of brain-imaging technology, Picturing Personhood is an unprecedented study that will influence both cultural studies and the growing field of science and technology studies.
