Book Synopsis Review of Organic Functional Groups by : Thomas L. Lemke
Download or read book Review of Organic Functional Groups written by Thomas L. Lemke and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2003 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to be used as a self-paced review, this text outlines the functional groups common to organic chemistry, reviewing the general topics of nomenclature, physical and chemical properties, and metabolism. The text provides background material for the formal pharmacy courses in medicinal chemistry, easing the transition from general organic chemistry courses required of all pre-pharmacy students. The Fourth Edition will include a workbook on CD-ROM as well as an index on general drug metabolism. Students who use this text are able to complete difficult tasks such as: drawing a chemical structure or official chemical name; predicting solubility of chemicals in liquids; predicting and showing, with chemical structures, the metabolism of organic functional groups; predicting and showing instabilities, with chemical structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical handbook for chemists performing bond forming reactions, this book features useful information on the synthesis of common functional groups in organic chemistry. • Details modern functional group synthesis through carbon-heteroelement (N, O, P, S, B, halogen) bond forming reactions with a focus on operational simplicity and sustainability. • Summarizes key and recent developments – which are otherwise scattered across journal literature – into a single source • Contains over 100 detailed preparations of common functional groups • Included 25 troubleshooting guides with suggestions and potential solutions to common problems. • Complements the text in enhanced ebook editions with tutorial videos where the author provides an introduction to microwave assisted chemistry
Book Synopsis Functional Group Chemistry by : James R. Hanson
Download or read book Functional Group Chemistry written by James R. Hanson and published by Wiley-RSC. This book was released on 2002-05-09 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional Group Chemistry presents the chemistry of functional groups with an emphasis on patterns of reactivity, the consequences of the relative electronegativity of the atoms that constitute functional groups, the role of lone pairs and the stereochemistry of reactions at a particular group. The material is presented in four chapters. The first chapter describes some of the general principles that affect the reactivity of functional groups. The second chapter examines the chemistry of functional groups involving (sigma)- C-X bonds as in alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, amines and organometallic reagents. The third chapter covers the chemistry of both symmetrical and unsymmetrical (pi)-bonded functional groups, typified by alkenes and carbonyl groups. The final chapter concentrates on aromatic compounds. It is concerned with the interactions between an aromatic ring and functional groups that are attached to it, such as their effect on the orientation of aromatic substitution. Each chapter concludes with a series of problems. The chemistry of the functional groups is considered here with a mechanistic rationale. Students are encouraged to consider the reactivity of functional groups in terms of their regions of electron deficiency and excess, and hence to identify the sites at which nucleophiles and electrophiles might react.

Book Synopsis Multiple Representations in Chemical Education by : John K. Gilbert
Download or read book Multiple Representations in Chemical Education written by John K. Gilbert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-28 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry seeks to provide qualitative and quantitative explanations for the observed behaviour of elements and their compounds. Doing so involves making use of three types of representation: the macro (the empirical properties of substances); the sub-micro (the natures of the entities giving rise to those properties); and the symbolic (the number of entities involved in any changes that take place). Although understanding this triplet relationship is a key aspect of chemical education, there is considerable evidence that students find great difficulty in achieving mastery of the ideas involved. In bringing together the work of leading chemistry educators who are researching the triplet relationship at the secondary and university levels, the book discusses the learning involved, the problems that students encounter, and successful approaches to teaching. Based on the reported research, the editors argue for a coherent model for understanding the triplet relationship in chemical education.
