Book Synopsis Cross-Linguistic Aspects of Processability Theory by : Manfred Pienemann
Download or read book Cross-Linguistic Aspects of Processability Theory written by Manfred Pienemann and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven years ago Manfred Pienemann proposed a novel psycholinguistic theory of language development, Processability Theory (PT). This volume examines the typological plausibility of PT. Focusing on the acquisition of Arabic, Chinese and Japanese the authors demonstrate the capacity of PT to make detailed and verifiable predictions about the developmental schedule for each language. This cross-linguistic perspective is also applied to the study of L1 transfer by comparing the impact of processability and typological proximity. The typological perspective is extended by including a comparison of different types of language acquisition. The architecture of PT is expanded by the addition of a second set of principles that contributes to the formal modeling of levels of processability, namely the mapping of argument-structure onto functional structure in lexical mapping theory. This step yields the inclusion of a range of additional phenomena in the processability hierarchy thus widening the scope of PT.

Download or read book Mitochondria written by Dario Leister and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-12 with total page 1195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitochondrial Genomics and Proteomics Protocols offers a broad collection of methods for studying the molecular biology, function, and features of mitochondria. In the past decade, mitochondrial research has elucidated the important influence of mitochondrial processes on integral cell processes such as apoptosis and cellular aging. This practical guide presents a wide spectrum of mitochondrial methods, each written by specialists with solid experience and intended for implementation by novice and expert researchers alike. Part I introduces major experimental model systems and discusses their specific advantages and limitations for functional analysis of mitochondria. The concise overview of general properties of mitochondrial systems is supplemented by detailed protocols for cultivation of model organisms. Parts II-VI comprise a robust collection of protocols for studying different molecular aspects of mitochondrial functions including: genetics and microbiology, biochemistry, physiology, dynamics and morphology, and functional genomics. Emphasis is placed on new and emerging topics in mitochondrial study, such as the examination of apoptotic effects, fusion and fission of mitochondria, and proteome and transcriptome analysis.
Book Synopsis “And in Length of Days Understanding” (Job 12:12) by : Erez Ben-Yosef
Download or read book “And in Length of Days Understanding” (Job 12:12) written by Erez Ben-Yosef and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 1956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume book presents cutting-edge archaeological research, primarily as practiced in the Eastern Mediterranean region. These volumes’ key foci are inspired by the work of Thomas E. Levy. Volume 1 provides an in-depth look at new archaeological research in the southern Levant (primarily in modern Israel and Jordan) inspired by Levy’s commitment to understanding social, political, and economic processes in a long-term or “deep time” perspective. Volume 2 focuses on new research in several key areas of 21st century anthropological archaeology and archaeological science. Volume 1 is organized around two major themes: 1) the later prehistory of the southern Levant, or the Neolithic, Chalcolithic, and Bronze Age, and 2) new research in biblical archaeology, or the historical archaeology of the Iron Age. Each section contains a combination of new perspectives on key debates and studies introducing new research questions and directions. Volume 2 is organized around five major themes: 1) the archaeology of the Faynan copper ore district of southern Jordan, a key region for archaeometallurgical research in West Asia where Levy conducted field research for over a decade, 2) new research in archaeometallurgy beyond the Faynan region, 3) marine and maritime archaeology, focusing on issues of trade and environmental change, 4) cyber-archaeology, an important 21st century field Levy conceived as “the marriage of archaeology, engineering, computer science, and the natural sciences,” and 5) key issues in anthropological archaeological theory. In addition to presenting the reader with an up-to-date view of research in each of these areas, the volume also has chapters exploring the connections between these themes, e.g. the maritime trade of metals and cyber-/digital archaeological approaches to metallurgy. The work contains contributions from both up-and-coming early career researchers and key established figures in their fields. This book is an essential reference for archaeologists and scholars in related disciplines working in the southern Levant and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Book Synopsis Wombs and Alien Spirits by : Janice Boddy
Download or read book Wombs and Alien Spirits written by Janice Boddy and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1989-12-01 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on nearly two years of ethnographic fieldwork in a Muslim village in northern Sudan, Wombs and Alien Spirits explores the zâr cult, the most widely practiced traditional healing cult in Africa. Adherents of the cult are usually women with marital or fertility problems, who are possessed by spirits very different from their own proscribed roles as mothers. Through the woman, the spirit makes demands upon her husband and family and makes provocative comments on village issues, such as the increasing influence of formal Islam or encroaching Western economic domination. In accommodating the spirits, the women are able metaphorically to reformulate everyday discourse to portray consciousness of their own subordination. Janice Boddy examines the moral universe of the village, discussing female circumcision, personhood, kinship, and bodily integrity, then describes the workings of the cult and the effect of possession on the lives of men as well as women. She suggests that spirit possession is a feminist discourse, though a veiled and allegorical one, on women's objectification and subordination. Additionally, the spirit world acts as a foil for village life in the context of rapid historical change and as such provides a focus for cultural resistance that is particularly, though not exclusively, relevant to women.

Book Synopsis Sedimentary Basin Tectonics from the Black Sea and Caucasus to the Arabian Platform by : Marc Sosson
Download or read book Sedimentary Basin Tectonics from the Black Sea and Caucasus to the Arabian Platform written by Marc Sosson and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2010 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide area of the Alpine-Himalayan belt evolved through a series of tectonic events related to the opening and closure of the Tethys Ocean. In doing so it produced the largest mountain belt of the world, which extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. The basins associated with this belt contain invaluable information related to mountain building processes and are the locus of rich hydrocarbon accumulations. However, knowledge about the geological evolution of the region is limited compared to what they offer.

This book was released on 2021-01-22 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different levels in health sciences, in particular public health, have acknowledged the significant role of epidemiology methods for early detection of emerging infections, alert systems, and preparedness interventions. Therefore, it is important to understand how epidemiological research is conducted and how it can be used at various levels to make exposure or incidence data on a general population available. In this, epidemiological research connected to both human and technology interactions is of primary importance. Epidemiological Research Applications for Public Health Measurement and Intervention provides relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the field of epidemiology. The chapters within this essential reference source enhance the knowledge of epidemiological research and measurement to investigate, detect, and monitor emerging pathological infections. While highlighting topics that include the history of epidemiology; the applications of epidemiology; and also the uses, principles, and roles of epidemiology, this book is ideally intended for professionals and researchers working in the field of health sciences in various disciplines and government officials, policymakers, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students who are interested in epidemiological research and measurement for increasing the effectiveness of public health practice.
