Krein was a major contributor to functional analysis, operator theory, partial differential equations, fluid dynamics, and other areas, and the author of several influential monographs in these areas. He was a prolific teacher, graduating 83 Ph.D. students. Krein also created and ran, for many years, the annual Voronezh Winter Mathematical Schools, which significantly influenced mathematical life in the former Soviet Union. The articles contained in this volume are written by prominent mathematicians, former students and colleagues of Selim Krein, as well as lecturers and participants of Voronezh Winter Schools. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to computing the index of elliptic PDEs on non-compact Riemannian manifolds in the presence of local singularities and zeros, as well as polynomial growth at infinity. The classical Riemann–Roch theorem and its generalizations to elliptic equations on bounded domains and compact manifolds, due to Maz’ya, Plameneskii, Nadirashvilli, Gromov and Shubin, account for the contribution to the index due to a divisor of zeros and singularities. On the other hand, the Liouville theorems of Avellaneda, Lin, Li, Moser, Struwe, Kuchment and Pinchover provide the index of periodic elliptic equations on abelian coverings of compact manifolds with polynomial growth at infinity, i.e. in the presence of a "divisor" at infinity. A natural question is whether one can combine the Riemann–Roch and Liouville type results. This monograph shows that this can indeed be done, however the answers are more intricate than one might initially expect. Namely, the interaction between the finite divisor and the point at infinity is non-trivial. The text is targeted towards researchers in PDEs, geometric analysis, and mathematical physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has evolved from my experience over the past decade in teaching and doing research in functional analysis and certain of its appli cations. These applications are to optimization theory in general and to best approximation theory in particular. The geometric nature of the subjects has greatly influenced the approach to functional analysis presented herein, especially its basis on the unifying concept of convexity. Most of the major theorems either concern or depend on properties of convex sets; the others generally pertain to conjugate spaces or compactness properties, both of which topics are important for the proper setting and resolution of optimization problems. In consequence, and in contrast to most other treatments of functional analysis, there is no discussion of spectral theory, and only the most basic and general properties of linear operators are established. Some of the theoretical highlights of the book are the Banach space theorems associated with the names of Dixmier, Krein, James, Smulian, Bishop-Phelps, Brondsted-Rockafellar, and Bessaga-Pelczynski. Prior to these (and others) we establish to two most important principles of geometric functional analysis: the extended Krein-Milman theorem and the Hahn Banach principle, the latter appearing in ten different but equivalent formula tions (some of which are optimality criteria for convex programs). In addition, a good deal of attention is paid to properties and characterizations of conjugate spaces, especially reflexive spaces.

This book offers an innovative way to learn the differential geometry needed as a foundation for a deep understanding of general relativity or quantum field theory as taught at the college level. The approach taken by the authors (and used in their classes at MIT for many years) differs from the conventional one in several ways, including an emphasis on the development of the covariant derivative and an avoidance of the use of traditional index notation for tensors in favor of a semantically richer language of vector fields and differential forms. But the biggest single difference is the authors' integration of computer programming into their explanations. By programming a computer to interpret a formula, the student soon learns whether or not a formula is correct. Students are led to improve their program, and as a result improve their understanding.
