Book excerpt: The quality of the final discharge was very good, with BOD consistently less than 50 mg/l, which is the required standard for water course discharge in Malaysia. Recent optimisation exercise has also shown that similar performance could be achieved at a shorter operation cycle. This paper also presents the operation and maintenance aspects of the system. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) is well-known for treating biodegradable effluent such as Palm oil Refinery Effluent (PORE). However few studies had been conducted on treatment of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) using SBR. A pilot scale SBR had been installed to evaluate the performance of treating POME. The reactor is capable of treating up to 5 m3 of POME per day depending on the quality of incoming anaerobic liquor. Results obtained from the studies showed that the process could produce very good quality final discharge with BOD value which is consistently well below 50mg/L/ The system could also tolerate fluctuations of organic loads between operation cycles. SBR system therefore offers a promising process for the treatment of POME.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Pollution Control in Asia documents the proceedings of the Second IAWPRC Asian Conference on Water Pollution Control, held in Bangkok, Thailand, 9-11 November 1988. The conference brings together the various factors that must be considered when investigating the development of water supply and control of sewage disposal systems, especially for small villages or towns and large communities in Asia which are situated too far from a piped system of water supply, thus requiring its own sources treatment and sewage disposal. The contributions made by researchers at the conference are organized into seven parts. Part 1 examines the various aspects of water quality management. The papers in Part 2 deal with the analysis and cleanup of river, lake, and marine pollution. Part 3 discusses the treatment of human waste while Part 4 is devoted to industrial waste treatment approaches. Part 5 focuses on water treatment methods. Part 6 contains studies on water reuse and groundwater contamination. The papers in Part 7 cover various topics such as wastewater management in developing countries and the treatment of phenolic wastewater using rotating biological contactors.

Book excerpt: It is necessary to understand the extent of pollution in the environment in terms of the air, water, and soil in order for both humans and animals to live healthier lives. Poor waste treatment or pollution monitoring can lead to massive environmental issues, such as diminishing valuable resources, and cause a significant negative impact on society. Solutions, such as reuse of waste and sustainable waste management, must be explored to prevent these adverse effects. The Handbook of Research on Resource Management for Pollution and Waste Treatment is a collection of innovative research that examines waste and pollution treatment methods that can be adopted at local and international levels and examines appropriate resource management strategies for environmentally related issues. Featuring coverage on a wide range of topics such as soil washing, bioremediation, and runoff handling, this book is ideally designed for environmentalists, engineers, waste management professionals, natural resource regulators, environmental policymakers, scientists, academicians, researchers, and students seeking current research on viable resource management methods for the regeneration of their immediate environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practical guide on what to do right when biological influences cause a sequencing batch reactor to go wrong This richly illustrated, straightforward guide carries forth the legacy established by previous editions in the Wiley Wastewater Microbiology series by focusing attention on the mixed gathering of organisms cohabitating within a sequencing batching reactor (SBR), and the key roles their biology plays in this wastewater processing tank's function. With a clear, user-friendly presentation of complex subject matter, Troubleshooting the Sequence Batch Reactor first teaches plant operators how to differentiate the positive and expected organismal dynamics present in optimal SBR performance from the negative and damaging ones that create unhealthy sludge, and a stoppage in SBR operations. Next, Troubleshooting the Sequence Batch Reactor delivers all the tools necessary to get an SBR back on track and running safely. In this book you'll get: Short-course situations tested by the author for the past fifteen years Accessible material aimed at operators instead of design and consulting engineers Essential information for understanding biological conditions such as aerobic, anoxic, and anaerobic/fermentative at the treatment process Examination of the properties of protozoa (single-celled) and metazoa (multi-celled) organisms, and their significance in wastewater treatment Devoid of overwhelming scientific jargon, chemical equations, and kinetics, this book simplifies details to provide quick instruction for plant operators on how to make more informed day-to-day process control decisions, how to troubleshoot confidently when SBR conditions become compromised, and how to act decisively when the problem is ultimately identified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pilot-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was used to treat wastewater consisting of domestic and industrial effluents. The SBR system was programed to have a 3-hour FILL without aeration followed by a 1/2 hour REACT in a 6-hour cycle. MLVSS in the reactor was maintained between 1000 and 1500 mg/L. The settled sewage had an average BOD5 of 184, COD of 674 and TSS of 156 mg/L. The BOD5 of the treated effluent averaged 42 mg/L (an average removal rate of 77%), COD 258 mg/L (62%) and TSS 87 mg/L (44%). Although the treated effluent still did not meet the allowable discharge standards of BOD, 20 mg/L and TSS 30 mg/L, the performance of the system was considered good for the 1/2 hour of REACT time. The SBI of 50 suggested good compactibility; however, it did not necessarily suggested good settleability.

Book excerpt: The sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is perhaps the most promising and viable of the proposed activated sludge modifications today for the removal of organic carbon and nutrients. In a relatively short period, it has become increasingly popular for the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewaters, as an effective biological treatment system due to its simplicity and flexibility of operation. Mechanism and Design of Sequencing Batch Reactors for Nutrient Removal has been prepared with the main objective to provide a unified design approach for SBR systems, primarily based on relevant process stoichiometry. Specific emphasis has been placed upon the fact that such a unified design approach is also by nature the determining factor for the selection of the most appropriate cyclic operation scheme, the sequence of necessary phases and filling patterns for the particular application. The proposed basis for design is developed and presented in a stepwise approach to cover both organic carbon and nutrient removal, domestic and industrial wastewaters, strong and specific wastes. The merits of model simulation as an integral complement of process design, along with performance evaluation of SBR models are also emphasized. Scientific and Technical Report No. 19

Book excerpt: This book is designed with the objective of studying microalgae and its application in the widest sense. Microalgae offer various inherent advantages as they are capable of accumulating lipids (20–70%), and able to aid with the production of pigments, carbohydrates, and proteins. The book comprehensively covers microalgae isolation techniques, their cultivation, and wastewater treatment by microalgae as well as the impact on biomass, lipid extraction, biofuel, and utilization of residual biomass focusing on biorefinery approach. The volume discusses the conversion of defatted oiled microalgae biomass for different applications. Acknowledging these challenges, this book discusses the limitations, outcomes, and economic aspects
