Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data is presented for several methods of controlling contaminated dust at hazardous waste sites. Commercial dust suppressant products were applied to exposed areas and spoil storage piles to control wind erosion emissions. Windscreens were also used to control emissions from the storage piles. The chemical dust suppressants were effective in controlling wind erosion emissions in both applications. Windscreens were effective in reducing windspeed but did not produce commensurate reductions in particulate concentrations coming from the pile. Emissions generated by equipment movement during active cleanup were controlled by spraying the active work area with water and with a water-surfactant mixture. Emissions generated by loading soil into a truck were controlled with an array of spray nozzles mounted on the sides of the truck bed. A similar array of foam nozzles was also used to control loading emissions. All of these methods were effective in reducing emissions generated by active cleanup.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of engineering scale dust control experiments using soil fixative for contamination control during handling of transuranic waste. These experiments focused on controlling dust during retrieval operations of buried waste where waste and soil are intimately mixed. Sources of dust generation during retrieval operations include digging, dumping, and vehicle traffic. Because contaminants are expected to attach to soil particles and move with the generated dust, control of the dust spread may be the key to contamination control. Dust control techniques examined in these experiments include the use of soil fixatives to control generation of fugitive dusts during vehicle traffic operations. Previous experiments conducted in FY 1990 included testing of the soil fixative, ENTAC. These experiments showed that ENTAC was effective in controlling dust generation but had several undesirable properties such as slow cure times and clogged the pumps and application nozzles. Therefore, other products would have to be evaluated to find a suitable candidate. As a result, two soil fixatives were tested in these present experiments, COHEREX-PM, an asphalt emulsion product manufactured by Witco Corporation and FLAMBINDER, a calcium lignosulfonate product manufactured by Flambeau Corporation. The results of the experiments include product performance and recommended application methods for application in a field deployable contamination control unit to be built in FY 1993.
Book Synopsis Dust Control Handbook for Industrial Minerals Mining and Processing by : Andrew B. Andrew B. Cecala

This book was released on 2015-05-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the mining and processing of minerals, the mined ore undergoes a number of crushing, grinding, cleaning, drying, and product sizing operations as it is processed into a marketable commodity. These operations are highly mechanized, and both individually and collectively these processes can generate large amounts of dust. If control technologies are inadequate, hazardous levels of respirable dust may be liberated into the work environment, potentially exposing workers. Accordingly, federal regulations are in place to limit the respirable dust exposure of mine workers. Engineering controls are implemented in mining operations in an effort to reduce dust generation and limit worker exposure.
