Book excerpt: Research into the control of emissions from gas turbine combustors demands high temperature and pressure where not only are test costs high but also the application of diagnostic tools to the interior of the combustor is technically difficult. Under the CEC BRITE/EURAM - funded Low Emissions Combustor Technology programme, the limitations of non-intrusive laser diagnostic techniques have been explored.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigated the use of three-wavelength light transmission and forward-angle scattered light intensity ratio techniques to determine the effects of fuel additives on particle sizes and mass concentrations in a T-63 combustor and evaluated several improvements to the T-63 diagnostic system. Data from both optical methods indicated an increase in particle size in a range of .06 to .10 microns occurred in the exhaust region when the fuel additive was used, with no change in mass concentration. The two techniques resulted in different measured particle sizes and require further investigation. Current improvements to the T-63 diagnostic apparatus are discussed along with required changes for further testing.

Book excerpt: A new liquid-fuel injector was designed for use in the atmospheric-pressure, model gas turbine combustor in Bucknell University's Combustion Research Laboratory during alternative fuel testing. The current liquid-fuel injector requires a higher-than-desired pressure drop and volumetric flow rate to provide proper atomization of liquid fuels. An air-blast atomizer type of fuel injector was chosen and an experiment utilizing water as the working fluid was performed on a variable-geometry prototype. Visualization of the spray pattern was achieved through photography and the pressure drop was measured as a function of the required operating parameters. Experimental correlations were used to estimate droplet sizes over flow conditions similar to that which would be experienced in the actual combustor. The results of this experiment were used to select the desired geometric parameters for the proposed final injector design and a CAD model was generated. Eventually, the new injector will be fabricated and tested to provide final validation of the design prior to use in the combustion test apparatus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SAE Recommended Practice Document promotes uniformity in the evaluation tests and performance measurements that are conducted on fuel injectors that are used in low-pressure gasoline engine applications. The scope of this document is limited to electronically-actuated fuel injection devices that are utilized in automotive gasoline port fuel injection systems where the fuel supply pressure is usually below 1000 kPa (low-pressure). Detailed test procedures are provided for determining numerous PFI injector parameters, including, but not limited to, flow curves, leakage, electromechanical performance, fluid compatibility and corrosion susceptibility, durability, the effects of vibration and torsional deflection, thermal cycling effects and noise. The standardized measurement procedures in this document are all bench tests. Characterization of the fuel spray from a low-pressure gasoline port fuel injector is quite important; however, these spray characterization tests are not addressed in this document, but are covered in a companion publication: SAE J2715.Tests and references to low-pressure gasoline injectors that are no longer commonly used in modern production are not included in the main body of this document. Superseded systems such as throttle body injection (TBI), central port injection (CPI), Pressure-Drop-Ratio (PDR), bottom-feed injectors and eight-ring patternation are examples of this older technology. Those fuel system components and diagnostic tests were extensively utilized in prior decades, but find little application in the industry today. The historical detailed measurement procedures that applied to the tests on these types of injectors have been removed from the main sections of the updated J1832; however, the associated overall descriptions of these hardware items that were in previous versions of J1832 have been retained in the Appendix for archival purposes. The use of uniform and standardized testing and evaluation procedures for port fuel injectors is important to the worldwide automotive community. The use of standardized test procedures provides an option to both injector manufacturers and end-users to have one defined test for each of the key injector performance parameters, instead of a specialized test protocol for each of many customers and applications. Although the direct injection system is growing in importance and application, the port fuel injection system continues to be the dominant method of gasoline metering in automotive engines throughout the world. Therefore, the many port fuel injector testing procedures that are detailed in this fully revised and expanded document will continue to have significant application.

Book excerpt: This paper explores recent results obtained during testing in an optically-accessible, JP8-fueled, flame tube combustor using baseline Lean Direct Injection (LDI) research hardware. The baseline LDI geometry has nine fuel/air mixers arranged in a 3 x 3 array. Results from this nine-element array include images of fuel and OH speciation via Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF), which describe fuel spray pattern and reaction zones. Preliminary combustion temperatures derived from Stokes/Anti-Stokes Spontaneous Raman Spectroscopy are also presented. Other results using chemiluminescence from major combustion radicals such as CH* and C2* serve to identify the primary reaction zone, while OH PLIF shows the extent of reaction further downstream. Air and fuel velocities and fuel drop size results are also reported.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel porous injector is designed for injection of gaseous fuel in land based gas turbine combustors. The injector is tested at atmospheric conditions at Combustion Research Laboratory, University of Cincinnati. In the present study, seven injector configurations are tested for mixing quality, LBO limits and emissions. For mixing studies, the CO2 technique is adopted to evaluate the fuel-air mixing under atmospheric conditions of the porous injector. The experiments are carried out at 4% pressure drop condition across the injector. The CO2 concentrations are converted to fuel mass fractions for the comparison. A comparison between the top/bottom injections, center/no center injection and 7/30 micron porous tubes show that these configurations do not impact the fuel-air mixing distribution. PIV measurements are carried out in non-reacting as well reacting conditions. Velocity profiles are obtained at a 1%-4% pressure drop condition. The experiments are carried out with and without combustor. A weak outer recirculation zone is observed downstream of the injector in the combustor. The velocity profiles are same at the exit plane of the injector with and without combustor. The velocity decreases gradually along the combustor. The ignition and lean blow out limit are observed to increase as the pressure drop increases. The flame liftoff distance is found to increase as the pressure drop increases. The NO, CO, and O2 emissions are evaluated at the downstream of the porous injector at 6" from the entrance of the combustor. The results show that the NOx emissions are ~ 7 ppm @ 15% O2.
