Book excerpt: Things hadn’t been going very well for Lucy and her two sisters. When their parents died, their uncle had moved in and took over. The girls, apparently, were too much trouble to worry about, so he’d dumped them onto the streets to fend for themselves. It was just luck that Ian McCray and his family had found Lucy that day. Both Lucy and her sister, Jilly, were in bad need of medical attention. Ian was just thrilled to have found his mate alive. In their situation, it could have been much worse. Lucy was thankful for the help, but she was just going from one man to another lording over her and dictating what she could and couldn’t do. It was marry Ian or lose her sisters for good. Ian was a nice man, but she was tired of everyone telling her what to do.

Book excerpt: Unhinged: Exposing Liberals Gone Wild is Michelle Malkin's unrestrained and uncensored exposé of hate-mongering Leftists. With wit, wisdom, and a bullet-proof vest, Malkin ruthlessly and raucously skewers the myths of liberal tolerance, peace, and civility while responding to the incendiary insults and vile slurs directed at her and other conservatives. With infuriating details that are not for the faint of heart, Malkin chronicles the bizarre world of foaming-at-the-mouth Leftists in their natural habitats: the mainstream media, academia, Hollywood, and Washington.

Book excerpt: Joshua King spends his nights sitting on different stools in different bars, listening to music that reminds him of the days and more importantly, the people he has lost. He only has one person left in his life. Liam, his best friend, has been with him from day one, and he may be the last reason for Joshua to hold onto the bar he's sitting in front of. He's stuck in a cycle of always searching the past for answers to his present state and looking for the one thing that will help him stop looking back and help him break free from his cycle of bars and lonely nights. Joshua is the only one who can see himself. No one around is let in to see what he really looks like. In Search of Joshua King examines the cracks that occur in a person when divorce becomes his earliest childhood memory. Songs play throughout as a soundtrack to Joshua's life and as a navigation tool that reveals how the divorce of his parents affected both him and the relationships that he so desperately clings to. His primary escape is to find a bartender who is willing to fill his glass for him and let him forget about everything he has lost in life including his two loves.

Book excerpt: "Vampires exist. They call themselves "the Moon-Chosen". The U.S. government and the United Nations governing council have kept the secret, desperately hiding it from the general population. The last thing they want is for the bloodsuckers to go war. Klaw Cavanaugh is a vampire and sometime assassin masquerading among human society. He owes an uneasy allegiance to Nero Serranova, a vampire prince with a bloody plan to unite the warring Gather-families of Gen Nocturna under one banner. Serranova's plan includes shredding the secret truce between humans and vampires, detailed in an unpublicized document known as "The Raptor Protocols". Dismayed, Cavanaugh enlists the aid of fellow vampire Lucraysha Radcleff, herself haunted by a past she is driven to atone for, and rogue intelligence agent Jordan Pride, an operative of the Urban Crimes Crisis Control Force's "Freak Show" unit, which covertly handles vampire crime. Josiah Kreed, a policeman within the rival Demonic community, has Klaw and associates under surveillance with orders to terminate them if their investigation threatens the power of the Demonics. Klaw knows Serranova's diabolical plot that can only end in disaster for his species. He rebels, recruiting the other adventurers. Reluctantly, they join forces to bring Serranova to justice."

Book excerpt: The story revolves around the hunt for Paul Leonard, the man responsible for the death of Stanley Colton’s mother and father, Jack and Samantha Colton and his younger sister, Ashley. Jack was a detective as well as a hitman of an underground elite to stabilize the prison, as well as the country’s population by eliminating murderers and rapists. This elite was started by high court judge, Judge Roberts. Jack and the rest of the family are murdered by Paul Leonard. Paul Leonard was a cop also set up as a hitman by Judge Roberts, who took advantage of this elite, creating a mob army to racketeer and make money off of weapons and drug smuggling. Jack Colton was the last to try and eliminate Paul as he had already killed all the families in association with the elite. Roberts gave Paul the idea of who the families were that tried to eliminate them. Although this is not shown, it’s stated when Stanley meets up with Roberts. Stanley witnessed the death of his family by hiding underneath a table, not being noticed. 13 years later detective Frank Colton and Officer Michael Sharp investigate files of previous convicts and one young hitman, never to be caught or ever convicted, to help them on their mission to capture and kill Paul Leonard with the help of Judge Roberts. Frank realizes that Stanley is the one who’s never been caught and tries to trace him up. With the significant help Officer Michael Sharp, Frank Colton finds out about Stanley Colton’s whereabouts. The two other convicts are already found and they await Stan’s approval. Detective Colton approaches Stan without telling him that they are family. Stanley’s attitude and heavy metal appearance shows that he has another life going. He continually disapproves stating “there were some things in life I chose to put behind me.” Tracey, Stanley’s on and off girlfriend, who’s aware of his hitman and tough skills, encourages him to participate as she tells him that there’s nothing wrong in receiving a little help. Stanley

Yorkshire, Los Angeles, Boston, Texas, Mexico and much more Helping an old lady get her stolen glasses back and dangling the thief over a cliff is just the start of a tarnished career and these stories fill in some of the gaps between his more widely published adventures. From the “Heavy Petting Chasing Tail Zen Dog Pet Boutique” to a bar at “Boquillas Crossing,” Grant just can’t let injustice go unpunished. But he’s not the only Yorkshireman in America. These stories also introduce Vince McNulty, a Yorkshire ex-cop now working for a tinpot movie company in Boston. It would be a strange coincidence if these two men didn’t know each other. Cops don’t believe in coincidence. Neither should you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all know what frak, popularized by television's cult hit Battlestar Galactica, really means. But what about feck? Or ferkin? Or foul--as in FUBAR, or "Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition"? In a thoroughly updated edition of The F-Word, Jesse Sheidlower offers a rich, revealing look at the f-bomb and its illimitable uses. Since the fifteenth century, no other word has been adapted, interpreted, euphemized, censored, and shouted with as much ardor or force; imagine Dick Cheney telling Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy to "go damn himself" on the Senate floor--it doesn't have quite the same impact as what was really said. Sheidlower cites this and other notorious examples throughout history, from the satiric sixteenth-century poetry of James Cranstoun to the bawdy parodies of Lord Rochester in the seventeenth century, to more recent uses by Ernest Hemingway, Jack Kerouac, Ann Sexton, Norman Mailer, Liz Phair, Anthony Bourdain, Junot Diaz, Jenna Jameson, Amy Winehouse, Jon Stewart, and Bono (whose use of the word at the Grammys nearly got him fined by the FCC). Collectively, these references and the more than one hundred new entries they illustrate double the size of The F-Word since its previous edition. Thousands of added quotations come from newly available electronic databases and the resources of the OED, expanding the range of quotations to cover British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Irish, and South African uses in addition to American ones. Thus we learn why a fugly must hone his or her sense of humor, why Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau muttered "fuddle duddle" in the Commons, and why Fanny Adams is so sweet. A fascinating introductory essay explores the word's history, reputation, and changing popularity over time. and a new Foreword by comedian, actor, and author Lewis Black offers readers a smart and entertaining take on the book and its subject matter. Oxford dictionaries have won renown for their expansive, historical approach to words and their etymologies. The F-Word offers all that and more in an entertaining and informative look at a word that, while now largely accepted as an integral part of the English language, still confounds, provokes, and scandalizes.
