Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit From the Jungle Most of the chapters herein given are experiences from real mission life, and were intended for papers to be read by our young people in America; a few are the outlines of addresses given while on furlough. Some of them have appeared in missionary publica tions in the United States. As this matter accumulated, friends suggested the idea of printing the whole collection in book form. This I finally decided to do, hoping thus to bring these experiences before a larger number of young people, who might thereby obtain a clearer understanding of mission life among the heathen, and whose interest in this great work might thereby be increased. I have always felt that real mission life among the heathen is not so fully depicted to our youth in America as it should be; hence my plainness of speech in several instances. The refined conditions of society in the United States of America make it exceedingly difficult to explain properly real conditions in this field; but it is hoped that this little book will help to an understanding of the great need, and awaken among our young people a sympathy and soul burden for the depressed and lower classes in heathen lands. Book excerpt: “The rare work of fiction that has changed real life . . . If you don’t yet know Molly Bolt—or Rita Mae Brown, who created her—I urge you to read and thank them both.”—Gloria Steinem Winner of the Lambda Literary Pioneer Award | Winner of the Lee Lynch Classic Book Award A landmark coming-of-age novel that launched the career of one of this country’s most distinctive voices, Rubyfruit Jungle remains a transformative work more than forty years after its original publication. In bawdy, moving prose, Rita Mae Brown tells the story of Molly Bolt, the adoptive daughter of a dirt-poor Southern couple who boldly forges her own path in America. With her startling beauty and crackling wit, Molly finds that women are drawn to her wherever she goes—and she refuses to apologize for loving them back. This literary milestone continues to resonate with its message about being true to yourself and, against the odds, living happily ever after. Praise for Rubyfruit Jungle “Groundbreaking.”—The New York Times “Powerful . . . a truly incredible book . . . I found myself laughing hysterically, then sobbing uncontrollably just moments later.”—The Boston Globe “You can’t fully know—or enjoy—how much the world has changed without reading this truly wonderful book.”—Andrew Tobias, author of The Best Little Boy in the World “A crass and hilarious slice of growing up ‘different,’ as fun to read today as it was in 1973.”—The Rumpus “Molly Bolt is a genuine descendant—genuine female descendant—of Huckleberry Finn. And Rita Mae Brown is, like Mark Twain, a serious writer who gets her messages across through laughter.”—Donna E. Shalala “A trailblazing literary coup at publication . . . It was the right book at the right time.”—Lee Lynch, author of Beggar of Love

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruits of Queensland: Fruit of Mangosteen Queensland's greatest want to-day is population: Men and women to develop our great natural resources, to go out into our country districts as farmers, dairymen, or fruit-growers - not to stick in our towns, but to become primary producers, workers, home-builders - not the scourings of big cities, the dissatisfied, the loafer, 'but the honest worker whose wish is to make a home for himself and his family. There are many such in the overcrowded cities of older countries, striving in vain to make a living - existing, it can hardly be called living, under conditions that are by no means conducive to their well-being - often poorly fed and poorly clad - who would better them selves by coming to Queensland, and by whom Queensland would be benefited. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Culture in Hawaii Many growers have successfully ripened citrus fruit with out infestation by bagging it. In a study of the best methods Of protecting the fruit, the station used medium-weight brown paper bags, and medium-weight cellophane bags to cover grape fruit, oranges, mandarins, and limes. Four-pound bags were used for grapefruit, three-pound bags for oranges, and two pound bags for mandarins and for limes. The bags were put on when the fruit was still green and nearly full grown. The bag was placed about the fruit and tied tightly enough to prevent the entry of water in case of rain; A workman can place 50 to 150 bags per hour, depending on the convenience of reaching the fruit. No foliage Should be bagged with the fruit. Although much rain fell during November and December, 1931, most of the bags were in good condition for from 30 to 50 days, when the fruit was picked. When the fruit ripened - those in the cello phane bags had deeper yellow coloring and possibly better flavor than the fruits in the paper bags. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Know Wild Fruits a Guide to Plants When Not in Flower, by Means of Fruit and Leaf I have attempted to deal with those plants only which bear attractively colored fruits. These fruits are the more noticeable ones; they do not, in most cases, develop until the blossoms have entirely disappeared; and they naturally fall into a class by themselves, being adapted for the same method of seed dispersal. The list will naturally include herbs, shrubs, and trees. A guide based on the kind and strue ture of the fruit will aid in determining the family to which a plant belongs, and under each family the species are grouped by colors. The illustrations will also aid in identifying specimens. If the acquaintance of approximately two hundred plants of our northeastern section in their fruited stage is made more accessible; if added attention is attracted to the result of the work of the flower, making our knowledge of the cycle of the plant's life more complete, the work, fragmentary though it he, may have a place.
