In den meisten Wissenschaften spricht man von „Informationszeitalter“, „Mediengesellschaft“ und „Computerisierung“ . In den letzten Jahren hat sich die technische Entwicklung rasant fortgesetzt und die Welt verändert. Es gibt eine enorme Anzahl verschiedenster elektronischer Medien, die allgegenwärtig sind, und deren Umstände u.a. einen bedeutenden sozialen Wandel bewirkt haben. Medien wirken schon früh in den Sozialisationsprozess des Menschen mit ein. Die Welt der Medien gehört zum Alltag, auch bereits in der Kindheit. Darum ist es meiner Meinung nach von Bedeutung, zu sehen, wie Kinder mit den neuen Gegebenheiten und der Tendenz zur kompletten Kommerzialisierung und Medialisierung umgehen. Eine wichtige Frage wird also sein: Wie ist denn die Bedeutung der Medien in der Kindheit zu beurteilen? Dass die Medien einen Anteil an der Kindheit haben, ist unumstritten. Vor einigen Jahren hat dies auch eine ganze Wirtschaftsbranche mobilisiert, die durch die Vielfalt der Medien, und vor allem dank der Vermehrung von Fernsehsendern und Kinderzeitschriften, nun direkt in die Kinderzimmer vordrang, um ihre Produkte für die Zielgruppe zu bewerben. Kinder sind zu einer wichtigen Einnahmequelle geworden. Sind Kinder der ganzen Konsum- und Werbewelt hilflos ausgeliefert und werden nur in ihrer Rolle als Konsument, Einnahmequelle und Zielgruppe gesehen? Muss man Kinder besonders vor der Kommerzialisierung und der Werbung schützen, und wenn ja: wie genau? In meiner Arbeit werden auch einige Studien behandelt, deren Ergebnisse äußerst interessant sind und einen Einblick in die Thematik geben. Zum Inhalt meiner Ausführungen möchte ich anmerken, dass ich zuerst auf den Wandel in der Freizeit eingehe, um die Wichtigkeit des Themas und den aktuellen Bezug darzustellen. Anschließend behandele ich in fließenden Übergängen, wie die Medien, der Kommerz und die Werbung auf die Kindheit einwirken und was sie auslösen. Im Detail heißt dies, dass ich erst die Kindheit und ihren Bezug zur Medienwelt betrachte, bevor ich dann beschreibe wie Kindheit und Kommerz im Verhältnis zueinander stehen. Als einen wichtigen Bereich beziehe ich mich dann noch auf die Welt der Werbung in der Kindheit. Zum Schluss erläutere ich noch den Kinderschutz in der Werbung, ehe ich zum Fazit gelange.

Given the restricted contact with the world outside of the immigration detention centre, the book juxtaposes forms and processes of technology-mediated communication between institutionalised detention, with those of displacement and settlement. It finds that while there are obstacles to communication in situations of conflict and dislocation, asylum seekers and refugees are able to ‘make do’ with the technology options available to them in ways which were less constrained than in detention settings. The book also outlines how communication practices during the settlement process focus on learning new technologies, and repairing the disconnections with family members resulting from separation and detention.

Book excerpt: Family photography, a ubiquitous domestic tradition in the developed world, is now more popular than ever thanks to the development of digital photography. Once uploaded to PCs and other gadgets, photographs may be stored, deleted, put in albums, sent to relatives and friends, retouched, or put on display. Moreover, in recent years family photographs are more frequently appearing in public media: on posters, in newspapers and on the Internet, particularly in the wake of disasters like 9/11, and in cases of missing children. Here, case study material drawn from the UK offers a deeper understanding of both domestic family photographs and their public display. Recent work in material culture studies, geography, and anthropology is used to approach photographs as objects embedded in social practices, which produce specific social positions, relations and effects.
