Book excerpt: The new kid on the block in Scandinavian crime! One cold morning in December, in a small rural town on the Swedish coast, Ake Melkersson is on his way to work when his car breaks down. Luckily he spots a garage nearby, but as he approaches he realises something is wrong. The owner of the garage lies dead, sprawled on the ground, his lower body crushed where a car has repeatedly driven over him. The murder investigation is led by Inspector Christian Tell who is something of a lone wolf. But he has very few clues to go on and the deceased's wife is out of the country on holiday. Ten years earlier Maya Granith is living at a college for troubled teenagers after escaping her shattered home and her neurotic mother. But when an older student takes an overbearing interest in her things begin to go wrong. Back in the present, another murder occurs when a man is shot in the head; again his body has been driven over several times. Tell is becoming increasingly involved with a female reporter but as she witness on the first case, their relationship is complicated - especially when aspects of the case remind the reporter of someone she knew who went missing ten years earlier.

Download or read book Frozen Moments written by Uma Balu and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains poems in six languages. Part I is in English and Part II, with a special title "My Beautiful Mistakes" is in Japanese, French, German, Hindi and Tamil. These were written when Uma was still a student and it is those "carefully preserved" mistakes in grammar that make them special and delightful to the reader. There is a small note at the beginning of each poem, which describes the inspiring moment and also a picture which conveys the message of the poem. Some are small and some are long, but each one describes the moment in detail, giving the reader a complete experience and a great feeling of satisfaction before moving on to the next poem.

Book excerpt: To his surprise and growing confusion, he realized that the sled wasn’t a sled at all. It was made out of lettuce. Without a doubt. It was clearly multiple sheets of lettuce sewn together by some kind of rope. The sled came to a complete stop and as his eyes wandered across the sled, he nearly fell back in surprise upon spotting a muscular carrot with arms and legs. “Oy! Stare at someone else!” snapped the carrot. “Yeah!” snapped another voice. Zach looked over at another muscular carrot, who was standing in front of the first. Then, Zach became aware of the fact that the entire sled was being pulled by muscular carrots, who all possessed human-like features such as arms, legs, faces, and green hair. “What exactly is going on here?” asked Zach curiously. “On is going nowhere!” snarled one of the carrots. “What…?” said Zach. “Nor is what!” said another carrot. “The only thing that is going anywhere is us!” laughed a third.

Download or read book Time Travel written by Nikk Effingham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are various arguments for the metaphysical impossibility of time travel. Is it impossible because objects could then be in two places at once? Or is it impossible because some objects could bring about their own existence? In this book, Nikk Effingham contends that no such argument is sound and that time travel is metaphysically possible. His main focus is on the Grandfather Paradox: the position that time travel is impossible because someone could not go back in time and kill their own grandfather before he met their grandmother. In such a case, Effingham argues that the time traveller would have the ability to do the impossible (so they could kill their grandfather) even though those impossibilities will never come about (so they won't kill their grandfather). He then explores the ramifications of this view, discussing issues in probability and decision theory. The book ends by laying out the dangers of time travel and why, even though no time machines currently exist, we should pay extra special care ensuring that nothing, no matter how small or microscopic, ever travels in time.

Being an ice-cream vendor (The Good Humor Man) however, forces him to be flavorful if you will. Since all the essay titles are dry but to the point--the exception being the one poem with a title that automatically conjures up a play on the title word 'Wondering', to wit, the word 'wandering'. His original title for the manuscript was 'A Rational View of Subjects; An Anthology', but then

This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personalist thought offers fundamental perspectives which are able to shape the broader fields of philosophy, theology, and related areas of study. Familiarity with the scope of its recent developments is valuable not only for personalist scholars but also for those interested in non-materialist thought and especially the problems and questions of the person in various aspects. This work, bringing together papers from a 2019 conference, aims to serve these readerships. It will also provide an archival record of the state of the field at this point in Western intellectual history. In terms of content, the work addresses four general themes: personalist thought as it is encountered in the writings of particular scholars; the place of personalism within broader philosophical thought; personalist engagement with major religious traditions; and the application of personalist modes of thinking to a range of real-world questions. The book is unique in that it brings together multiple strands of personalist thought, demonstrating its breadth and depth and its ability to engage in wider contemporary philosophical and cultural debates.

Book Synopsis The Truth of This Life by : Katherine Thanas
Download or read book The Truth of This Life written by Katherine Thanas and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accessible and elegant teachings from a well-loved and revered woman Zen teacher. “The truth and joy of this life is that we cannot change things as they are.” The import of those words can be found beautifully expressed in the work of the woman who spoke them, Katherine Thanas (1927–2012)—in her art, in her writing, and especially in her Zen teaching. Fearlessly direct and endlessly curious, Katherine’s understanding of Zen was inseparable from her affinity for the arts. She was an MFA student studying painting with Richard Diebenkorn, the preeminent Californian abstract painter, when she met Shunryu Suzuki, author of Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind, in the sixties. Soon thereafter she decided to drop painting to dedicate herself to Zen, which she did for the last forty years of her life. In these essential teachings taken from her dharma talks—which make up her only book—her love of art and literature shine through in her elegant prose and her vast references, from poets William Stafford and Naomi Shihab Nye to the Zen teachings of Dogen and Robert Aitken. Ranging on subjects from the practice of zazen to the meaning of life, Katherine urges us to “develop an insatiable appetite for inner awareness, to become proficient with this mind.” This slim volume is an important contribution by a well-loved and revered teacher.
