Book excerpt: This fourth and final volume of the Star Trails Tetralogy provides the action-packed and surprise ridden conclusion to the Brightstar saga that began in Beyond the Hidden Sky.Guilt ridden by their failure to prevent their father's ambush and exile Dirck and Creena remain at odds over cristobalite's usefulness. Eventually Dirck and Win depart for the Clique base at Apoca Canyon while Creena and the others remain in the Caverns to continue the controversial research. When little brother, Deven, finds a new crystal with even more amazing properties hope returns that saving their father may yet be possible. But before she can uncover its secrets Integrator forces invade the Caverns necessitating a harrowing escape loaded with unexpected consequences.Believing they're all lost forever, Dirck endures a dark and lonely time that changes him forever. The strange circumstances of their return vindicate Creena's faith in the crystals but now they're in a lethal race against the Integrator to develop the technology that will assure victory with time itself the ultimate prize.

Book excerpt: The Star Trails Tetralogy, i.e. Beyond the Hidden Sky; A Dark of Endless Days; A Psilent Place Below; and Refractions of Frozen Time, takes place in a fictitious universe which includes unfamiliar vocabulary, alien races, and numerous planets. This compendium was compiled for readers who requested more detail, such as a glossary of terms as well as descriptions of the political structure, weather patterns, and Cyraria's indigenous race, the bnolar. Topical discussion guides at the chapter level are included as well for those who want to delve even deeper, including book club discussion groups and #STEM educators who could use the stories to stimulate interest in numerous scientific or sociological topics.

Book excerpt: Dirck Brightstar knows there's something really weird about the caverns. Where did that dream come from? And how is it possible that his mother shared the same, identical dream? Orchestrating a prison break to rescue his father is a formidable task, one even his indomitable friend, Win, thinks is impossible. But if they don't, the unthinkable will happen. They need the bnolar's help but can Cyraria's indigenous race be trusted? With Integrator forces closing in on world domination, if the caverns' secret gets out the Brightstars won't be the only ones who are doomed. But if the dream Dirck and Creena share plays out the consequences will be even worse.

Book excerpt: The applicability of the seismic refraction method for engineering purposes was investigated in the Thule area of Greenland. Special attention was given to the cases in which shallow ice overlies frozen ground and in which frozen glacial drift up to a few hundred feet thick overlies bedrock. Seismic velocities were measured in different types of sediments of the Thule formation and in the crystalline basement rock. The velocities in rock and frozen ground were generally high, cementation by ice being the most likely reason at the relatively low ground temperatures of about -10 C. It was found that, with comparable velocity discrimination, the refraction method gives more complete information in permafrost than in unfrozen material, since later seismic events can be identified on the records shortly after the first arrival. Later events also made wide angle reflection soundings possible at a depth as shallow as 200 ft. A nagative velocity gradient in the frozen ground is believed to be responsible for the rapid attenuation of tthe direct wave. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With very few exceptions, geodetic measurements use electro magnetic radiation in order to measure directions, distances, time delays, and Doppler frequency shifts, to name the main ter restrial and space observables. Depending on the wavelength of the radiation and the purpose of the measurements, the follow ing parameters of the electromagnetic wave are measured: ampli tude, phase, angle-of-arrival, polarisation and frequency. Ac curate corrections have to be applied to the measurements in order to take into account the effects of the intervening medium between transmitter and receiver. The known solutions use at mospheric models, special observation programs, remote sensing techniques and instrumental methods. It has been shown that the effects of the earth's atmospheric envelope present a fundamental limitation to the accuracy and precision of geodetic measurements. This applies equally to ter restrial and space applications. Instrumental accuracies are al ready below the atmospherically induced limitations, and thus the accuracy demands on the geodetic refraction solutions are entering a new magnitude zone. This monograph is primarily devoted to the properties of the at mospheric effects on various geodetic measurements and to their evaluation. Ten review papers cover the most pressing aspects of the atmospheric effects on geodetic measurement~. Ttiese state of-the art papers were written by eminent specialists in their respective research fields.
