Book Synopsis Thermal Design Considerations in Frozen Ground Engineering by : Thomas G. Krzewinski
Download or read book Thermal Design Considerations in Frozen Ground Engineering written by Thomas G. Krzewinski and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Technical Council on Cold Regions Engineering of ASCE. The design of engineering projects in frozen ground requires thermal design considerations in addition to standard geotechnical design. Factors that influence the thermal characteristics of a site include climatological data, microclimatic characteristics, local hydrology, soil properties, and disturbance. This monograph presents ground temperature observations, procedures for temperature monitoring, analytical methods for ground thermal regime calculations, and ground thermal properties. Active and passive techniques for ground temperature control and ground thawing methods are also presented, followed by case histories of ground temperature effects.

Book Synopsis Comparison of Results Obtained from the French Rutting Tester with Pavements of Known Field Performance by : Timothy Aschenbrener
Download or read book Comparison of Results Obtained from the French Rutting Tester with Pavements of Known Field Performance written by Timothy Aschenbrener and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French rutting tester has been used successfully in France to eliminate the occurrence of rutting. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) were selected to demonstrate this equipment. Thirty-three sites across Colorado with good and poor performance and a variety of temperature and traffic conditions were selected. Test results indicated that the French rutting tester, using the French specifications, was overly severe for many of the temperature and environmental conditions encountered in Colorado. However, by adjusting the testing temperature to match the highest temperature at a site location, the French rutting tester did an excellent job of predicting pavement performance. The results from the French rutting tester also had good correlation with actual rutting depths when temperature and traffic levels were considered.
Book Synopsis Reactive Aggregate in Concrete Structures by : Reza Akhavan
Download or read book Reactive Aggregate in Concrete Structures written by Reza Akhavan and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colorado frequently experiences pavement deterioration due to reactive aggregates. This study examined whether alkali-silica reactivity was also causing damage to bridge structures. A number of bridges were inspected and samples were extracted from five and subjected to a petrographer's analysis. Three of the five samples showed conclusive evidence of alkali-silica reactivity. Evidence was not conclusive in two other samples (A).
Book Synopsis Highway Rockfall Research by : Bruce K. Stover
Download or read book Highway Rockfall Research written by Bruce K. Stover and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project is directed at developing and demonstrating a system for cost effectively evaluating and prioritizing highway rockfall hazards statewide. This pilot study produced a prototype computer-based highway rockfall hazard ranking system - "CRASH", which can be used to identify those areas of the state's highway system which have the highest incidences of rockfall accidents, as well as any area which has had a reported rockfall accident since 1976. The existing Oregon rockfall hazard ranking system (ODOT system) was selected and studied to determine if it addressed the varied geologic as well as physical rockfall situations in Colorado. This system was adapted to suit the requirements of our prototype hazard ranking scheme. Implementation of the Highway Rockfall Hazard Evaluation system was demonstrated on five pre-selected areas. The mile in each area with the highest number of reported rockfall accidents, as determined by "CRASH", was ranked using the ODOT system
Book Synopsis The Design and Application of Controlled Low-strength Materials (flowable Fill) by : Amster K. Howard
Download or read book The Design and Application of Controlled Low-strength Materials (flowable Fill) written by Amster K. Howard and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1998 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focuses on a type of material mainly used in place of compacted backfill for pipe embedment and backfill, but gaining widely in applications. It is a mixture of cementitious material, soil, water, and sometimes fly ash and admixtures. Here 26 papers, from a June 1997 symposium in St. Louis, Missouri, describe new design procedures, new applications, and installation innovations in order to help assess the need for new or revised standards. They cover ingredients, properties, test methods, standards and specifications, case histories, and pipeline applications. The five current standards are appended.
