Book Synopsis Climate and Geo-Sciences by : A.L. Berger

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been widely recognized recently that in order to make scientific progress on large and important problems (eg, carbon dioxide effects on climate, viability of various sites for nuclear waste disposal etc.), it is necessary to integrate knowledge from wide ranging sets of disciplines. This is certainly true in the climate sciences, for progress in understanding the cause of the ice ages or the effects of industrial pollution on the future climate or even the likelihood of severe climatic consequences in the aftermath of nuclear war. All require state-of -the -art input from many geoscience disci plines climatology, oceanography, meteorology, chemistry, ecology, glaciology, geology, astronomy, space technology, computer technology, mathematics etc. Major international meetings have called for interaction of such geo-science disciplines to solve real world problems. To move beyond the rhetorical level, the NATO Special Programme on Global Transport Mechanisms in the Geo-Sciences whose activities started in 1983, deci ded to organise his closing symposium on such a topic which focus on the relationship between climate and geo-sciences. This symposium was held at the end of May 1988 at the Universite Catholique de Louvain, Louvain-Ia-Neuve, Belgium. One hundred-and-thirty participants from the 16 NATO countries and a number of non-NATO countries assembled for the Symposium. Another feature was the attendance by special invitation of 16 pro mising young scientists who might well become leading scientists on climate and geo-sciences in their respective countries in the next century.

Download or read book U.S. Land Gravity written by Allen M. Hittelman and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gravity data have many scientific applications, both on the surface of the Earth and in space. The data are used for computing gravitational models, which aid those searching for oil, gas, and minerals. Alone or in combination with other data (such as satellite, astrogeodetic, or geophysical), gravity data are used to calculate deflection of the vertical components, geoidal heights, gravity disturbance components, and datum shifts for orienting local geodetic datums to an Earth-centered world geodetic system. The data are also used for calibrating inertial navigation and guidance systems"--Introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significance of graphic communications has been a factor of man's existence throughout history. Although differences of language inhibit communication, the properly presented graphic allows people of different nationalities, different social levels and different professions to communicate their ideas. It is the technique of graphic presentation that has been changing and in recent years the variety of techniques available have increased enormously. There has been a significant increase in the use of colour during this century and in recent years the kaleidoscope of fluorescent colours. Oceanographic instrumentation has been completely metamorphized during the last two decades. Mechanical devices have given way to electronic systems. There is extensive use of computers both ashore and afloat and many instruments are directly coupled to computers. The use of acoustics has been extended from the field of anti-submarine warfare and simple echo sounding to a wide variety of acoustic sensing and measuring devices of which side scan sonar is the best known. Much of the data is manipulated in mathematical form and there is extensive use of mathematical modelling. Yet, for some purposes, the graphic portrayal of oceanographic data is for conceptualizing processes, for communication with colleagues in the form of scientific papers and their illustrations and for describing oceanographic features and processes to the public at large. There appears to be a hiatus between the use of conventional graphic techniques and the output from new kinds of oceanographic instrumentation. How can a satellite image be most effectively translated into a hard copy graphic? How can the differing signal strength from an acoustic system be shown in a way that is meaningful to the geologist? These are but some of the cartographic problems that must be resolved and the working meeting that is reported upon through the pages of this book is but one step in this pursuit.

Download or read book Information Storage and Retrieval Systems written by Gerald J. Kowalski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-11-19 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter 1 places into perspective a total Information Storage and Retrieval System. This perspective introduces new challenges to the problems that need to be theoretically addressed and commercially implemented. Ten years ago commercial implementation of the algorithms being developed was not realistic, allowing theoreticians to limit their focus to very specific areas. Bounding a problem is still essential in deriving theoretical results. But the commercialization and insertion of this technology into systems like the Internet that are widely being used changes the way problems are bounded. From a theoretical perspective, efficient scalability of algorithms to systems with gigabytes and terabytes of data, operating with minimal user search statement information, and making maximum use of all functional aspects of an information system need to be considered. The dissemination systems using persistent indexes or mail files to modify ranking algorithms and combining the search of structured information fields and free text into a consolidated weighted output are examples of potential new areas of investigation. The best way for the theoretician or the commercial developer to understand the importance of problems to be solved is to place them in the context of a total vision of a complete system. Understanding the differences between Digital Libraries and Information Retrieval Systems will add an additional dimension to the potential future development of systems. The collaborative aspects of digital libraries can be viewed as a new source of information that dynamically could interact with information retrieval techniques.
