Book excerpt: On the front porch of one Victorian home in the small Southern town of Eubanks, six women gather to indulge themselves in some cutting up, cutting loose, and an unparalleled stream of blowing off steam. While these friends cannot stop the events that at times attempt to knock them off their charted courses, they do find a way to embrace the changes in their lives-through each other's support, laughter, and a healthy dose of Miss Abby's lemonade (recipe included in book). Hold the vodka? The characters are charming and often downright hilarious. The tragedies and triumphs that bounce around this circle of friends are familiar to all of us. This is a book that will warm your heart, make you laugh, bring you closer to the important things in life, which admittedly change with the seasons, as does all of nature. And not once is the saying "when life gives you lemons . . ." used in the telling of events.

Book excerpt: Mrs. Julia Reid Paxton was a wonderfully gentlewoman who graciously accepted the challenge of writing a book with me which would say all those things to the children of the world that she was unable to say to children of her own. Her life was filled with the memories of missionary service in Cuba, then Florida, San Antonio, Texas working with Mexican-Americans, and her final year as a missionary was in Houma, Louisiana. Upon retiring from that service, she continued the same work on a daily basis with people in her hometown, Lake Charles, Louisiana where she was born at home and raised. Her activities included organizations in and outside her home church, First United Methodist Church on Broad St. Although she was born into a large family, she and her husband, W. W. Paxton, had no children of their own. Love delivered to all children she met filled that spot in her heart. Her own mother, Annie Henington Reid, was very religious and was the most influential presence in her life. Her father, Andrew Jackson Reid, the Chief of Police in Lake Charles, died of blood poisoning when she was twelve years old. The characters in this book are fictitious combinations of family, friends and imagination of this writer. The delicious taste of her imaginary life as my Grandma, only teased my appetite for more interviews with this colorful yet humble lady. Her outlook was perpetually optimistic and she never looked back for regrets. Not listening enough to others was her self criticism. According to her, this was very important in getting along with all people. Lake Charles was her home close to her church and life long friends until her death in 1999. Her inspiration was motivating and I truly miss our time together as I dedicate this beginning to her.

Book excerpt: This is not just a book, its a MOVEMENT. Lisa did not choose to write Hive, Hive chose her. Kute Blackson, transformational teacher and bestselling author of You.Are.The.One. Four generations live under one roof in Columbus, Ohio, and theyve figure out to make it work: dividing responsibilities and chores, re-designing some physical spaces for privacy, and reconfiguring others into common areas for all to gather and enjoy living together. This tale of heartache, heroism, and hope is one familys multi generational social experiment, which encompasses kids in their teens, parents in their forties, grandparents in their seventies, and a ninety-plus year-old great-grandmother. Together, as they navigate the joys and challenges that come with aging in America, theyre also answering the question, How does family help you thrive at home when youre old? An Alzheimers/dementia diagnosis adds a layer of complexity, yet the family resolves to keep their eldest at home for as long as shes happy, safe and engaged in life. The younger generation learns much from their elders, and the elders from their children. While mastering the use of technology and new family systems, theyre also mastering the use of humor, tolerance, and patience. Ultimately, thats what makes this four-generation experiment a success. Practical design advice and clear-eyed strategies are mixed with personal tips and observations, making it easy to see how anyone can transform their home in into their own multi-generational living situation. Her stories are honest, both funny and poignant. The familys fiascos are counterbalanced by their many successes, the greatest one being that as individuals and as a family, they continue to thrive.

Book excerpt: With the publication of her first At Home Café cookbook, Helen Puckett DeFrance took her message of family bonding through cooking into homes all across America. Their tried and-true recipes, an inspired mix of old and new traditions, highlighted the pleasures of casual, at-home get-togethers with family and friends. Now DeFrance is back with an all new At Home Café cookbook, and once again casual entertaining takes center stage. Building on how the first book involved the whole family in the kitchen, this new volume features entertaining with friends and neighbors, including Neighbor Notes on complementary dishes that guests can bring. A wealth of menus is offered for spontaneous occasions as well, from the unstructured fun of a neighborhood picnic (featuring Buttermilk Fried Chicken Tenders and Po-Boy Sandwiches) to the relaxing weekend pleasure of a Southern jazz brunch (with Crab and Artichoke Casserole, Cheddar Cheese Puffs with Apple Smoked Bacon, and Creamy Dreamy Berry Treats). A countdown for every menu makes planning a breeze. The author is a veteran cooking school teacher with a knack for keeping things simple. Whether it is a hearty soup served around the fireplace on a cold winter's night; a make ahead casserole for those evenings when there's no time to cook; or a low-key tree-trimming get-together during the high-stress holidays, a whole lot of comfort is served up in these delectable dishes designed to create special memories with loved ones.

Book excerpt: Mount Taishan, China 1486 BCE Humans have marked the tales of destiny and fate on the walls of caves since time began. But surprisingly, the first evidenced comet, Lao-Tien-Yeh 老天葉 is not documented until 1486 BCE. By estimates today, the comet was four times brighter than the full moon. So it was not unusual that the scholars in China recorded it for posterity. An old monk climbs Mount Tai to witness the coming star. A reunion, deemed insignificant at first, introduces the monk to what eventually becomes the tenets behind Universal Truth. Principles of life that shape the foundation of Buddhism. He won’t have the chance to tell anyone, though, for an ancient force also stirs with the comet. Taishan was the last of her kind. Awakened by the nightless day, she guards an isolated valley claimed in battle from an earlier emperor. She still has the scars. The comet has all but erased any protection provided by the cover of night. The ten tails that trailed behind were another worry. They mirrored what appeared the night the old girl was born. An omen. A prophecy. A battle. A disaster. In that scenario, no one wins. Taishan was determined to die here. Her unborn would vanish with her unless the old monk can change their destiny. There are moments when we realize how fragile life is; how sacred the vows of compassion are. A soul becoming resplendent is hard-earned. A lifetime of serving others is the only way to get there. It takes a thousand years for the Buddhist doctrine is discovered again. Hanalei Bay, Hawaii Three Days Ago... Calvin's forgotten childhood promise sat locked in a drawer for fifty years, placed there by an ancient and bitter darkness. However, the obligation behind it had begun long before ever being bargained. It has woven through time and collected a would-be grandfather, a ragged old cat, and not the least of which, a renewed interest of the grey ladies, the Fates. You see, Clotho is the sister who spins the threads of life and destiny, and once upon a time, the sister tied these three souls together. Now, while caring for a recently rescued kitten, an accident occurs that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. Every imaginary friend that had ever visited Calvin in dreams has been tugged home again by the thread. Every Grumpmuffin, Gigglemonk, Cuddlemonk, Ticklemonk, and Adamsville Fairy expects to have their say. It has been a long time since a human has breached the veil and been able to hold a conversation. They intend to make the most of it. Harsh questions will be asked, secrets will be shared, and the truth will stand revealed. But, like the Chinese monk before him, Calvin will not have the chance to tell anyone. Once again, an ancient force stirs Although Twain, Tesla, Barrie, Warhol, The Apollo 12/Intrepid Landing Module, Perun-the Slavic God of Thunder, some Quantum Foam, and just a wee bit of lost faith, all make appearances, they may not be enough to change a destiny long ago set in motion. Comet Lao-Tien-Yeh 老天葉 is now designated 12P/Pons-Brooks. It is fast approaching. Evergreen, Colorado Now “Shhhh, it is soon to be December. Love blooms in the softer sunlight. Changing colors float along with the wisps of chimney smoke and beckon the gentler souls to wander out beneath the starlight. The Magic of Elysium begins in the cool, darkened evenings in the last days of Autumn.” ~ A Persistence of Dreams / Book Two of The Dreams Saga

When she is killed in a seemingly senseless accident during a burglary gone wrong, Albert is haunted by the loss. Their tale began in the first book of the series, Dark Clouds over Alabama. To escape the stigma of hate and prejudice, Obadiah and Penelope marry and move away from Alabama with their mothers and several slaves to El Dorado, Arkansas. They purchase a 600-acre plantation named Three Oaks, situated a few miles from El Dorado in southwest Arkansas. In this quiet, peaceful town, Obadiah opens up a medical practice and becomes the town’s beloved doctor. Under the Blue Skies of El Dorado, Obadiah and Penelope’s love blossoms, their family grows, the Civil War ends, and freedom comes to slaves in the South. Obadiah’s Christian beliefs and his deep faith in God see him through the troubled times. The novel presents love and hope in the best definition as it deals with tragedy and triumph in the Old South. Blue Skies is a must-read for anyone interested in this fascinating chapter of American history.
