Book excerpt: Baseball, like the rest of the country, changed dramatically when the United States entered World War I, and Jim Leeke brings these changes to life in From the Dugouts to the Trenches. He deftly describes how the war obliterated big league clubs and largely dismantled the Minor Leagues, as many prominent players joined the military and went overseas. By the war's end more than 1,250 ballplayers, team owners, and sportswriters would serve, demonstrating that while the war was "over there," it had a considerable impact on the national pastime. Leeke tells the stories of those who served, as well as organized baseball's response, including its generosity and patriotism. He weaves into his narrative the story of African American players who were barred from the Major Leagues but who nevertheless swapped their jerseys for fatigues, as well as the stories of those who were killed in action--and by diseases or accidents--and what their deaths meant to teammates, fans, and the sport in general. From the Dugouts to the Trenches illuminates this influential and fascinating period in baseball history, as nineteen months of upheaval and turmoil changed the sport--and the world--forever.

Book excerpt: From June 1941, the Soviets were forced to undertake large-scale defensive operations in the face of the overwhelming German blitzkrieg assault, operations which ran counter to their preference for highly mobile, offensive warfare. Lessons were quickly learned across a wide variety of terrain and climates, including the open steppes, dense forests, wooded swamps, cities, and in snow and ice, where the availability of construction materials differed greatly. The first to cover this topic in the English language and containing detailed information about the trenches, bunkers, observation posts and weapon positions, this book examines field fortifications built from local materials by infantrymen, as well as their use of mines, field camouflage techniques, and construction tools. It provides a first fascinating insight into Russian defensive attempts against the overwhelming might of the German Army.

Book excerpt: Drawing on diaries, letters and personal accounts from British conscripts who served on the Western Front in the latter half of the Great War, this is the first book to explore the contribution they made to the war effort. By the end of the war more than 2.5 million men had been conscripted, but their memory has not lived on; they are the lost legions of the First World War. Here, at last, their story is told: the story of ordinary men, from manual workers to clerks and solicitors, who became soldiers, fought and - for those who survived - went home. In this ground breaking work, Ilana Bet-El explains their absence from the imagery of the war. She reconstructs the daily life of soldiers on the Western Front as we are told, in the conscripts' own words, of the grim reality of dirt and lice and hunger, the mysteries of army pay and military discipline, and the joys of leave and cigarettes. It is a compelling journey back in time, which restores these men to the public image of the Great War by rediscovering the 'forgotten memory' of Britain's conscript army.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the two world wars my father took an interest in poems and rhymes from the Great War and wrote some 30 of them down in a notebook along with other poetry. This book is based on those poems and the Great War. In 1914 Britain was reluctantly drawn into war with Germany in support of France, an inevitability that had been forecast since the signing of the Entente Cordiale. Germany had the biggest army in the world and was the belligerent by declaring war against Russia and through that act, France, then England, by treaty or agreement, was also committed. In 1914 Britain's had a pathetically small army but by 1918 it was equal in size to the armies of Germany and France, and was taking the brunt of the fighting alongside a French army weakened by mutiny and low morale. Throughout the war the BEF fought heroically and courageously, at times forced to retreat, but they were never beaten. The enemy never managed to break through to the important centres or the Channel ports, nor did they ever break the British spirit. Yet the BEF were scorned by the powers that be at home and treated with ignominy, Lloyd George failed disgracefully to stand by the General Staff in France who, without doubt in some instances, made mistakes, they were however guided by their conscience and better judgement in their attempts to bring the war to an early conclusion. I hope that this book goes some way to restoring their credibility and shows the efforts of those who were there in a fairer perspective.
