I lost my sister when I was 22 years old and my father unexpectedly when I was 30. Through all of this I continue to “survive and advance” and seek to provide a positive outlook despite a diagnosis that promotes a grim 20%, 10 year survival rate. Ultimately, through my journey as a long-time athlete I have learned relentless grit and determination combined with discipline and a warrior’s mindset that has helped me persevere the last 3.5 years since diagnosis. At the end of the day, I am not a celebrity or any different than anyone else, but I am here to share my story of overcoming devastating odds with the hopes of seeing my children grow up.

Book excerpt: "I love clouds that I can almost touch." This sums up something so grand, something so above us and yet so near we can have the experience now if somehow, we can awaken to it. Weaved in and out of these lines there is a view from up there, an attitude from up there that conveys the aliveness of all things in nature. Nature, and truly all things, are waiting to be companions and friends. Smiles are the most magical of all things. There is wisdom carried with them when they are sincere. But how do you really convey some idea like that? It is a mystery. My greatest hope is that this book leaves you with a smile that knows God's blessings in all things. I never wrote these poems of myself but rather they are expressions I received during long periods of quiet. Then I wrote down what I could convey to share with you. There is much hidden, awaiting your surprise. It certainly was a gift given, to which I abound with abundant gratitude.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate guide to understanding the 114 sacred texts known as ‘The Gospel of Thomas’, revealing ancient Christian teachings and allowing for deep self-reflection and introspection. Discovered in 1945 in Egypt, but likely dating back to around 150-200AD, the Gospel of Thomas, is a collection of codices, each containing an affirmation or advice. Academic discourse has plagued the Gospel's modern existence, especially in relation to its English translation. Resultantly, a number of densely unintelligible translations have been produced, which use heavy ecclesiastical language and a biblical approach, obscuring the meaning of the text to laypeople. Now, Christine Folan provides a revolutionary approach, unpicking the Gospel's complexities, and providing a sensitive and effective way of understanding and ‘seeing’ the hidden, yet deeply profound, secrets of this ancient text. Folan's companion guide provides excerpts from the text alongside her own visceral and deep rooted interpretations, which will enlighten readers to the endless potential which can be gleaned from the Gospel. Guiding the reader with clarity and conviction, The Companion Guide to The Gospel of Thomas provides a way for readers to use the Gospel as a vessel for introspection, allowing them to search deep within themselves for their own unique truth and meaning. The book contains real life case studies of people whose lives have been drastically changed by the teachings of the Gospel, as well as suggested further reading for each chapter. The Companion Guide to The Gospel of Thomas is a manual for the practical application of spiritual principles, challenging readers not only to make sense of this ancient text in their own unique way, but also to live its message to make profound change in their day to day lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrated as one of Japan’s greatest filmmakers, Kobayashi Masaki’s scorching depictions of war and militarism marked him as a uniquely defiant voice in post-war Japanese cinema. A pacifist drafted into Japan’s Imperial Army, Kobayashi survived the war with his principles intact and created a body of work that was uncompromising in its critique of the nation’s military heritage. Yet his renowned political critiques were grounded in spiritual perspectives, integrating motifs and beliefs from both Buddhism and Christianity. A Dream of Resistance is the first book in English to explore Kobayashi’s entire career, from the early films he made at Shochiku studio, to internationally-acclaimed masterpieces like The Human Condition, Harakiri, and Samurai Rebellion, and on to his final work for NHK Television. Closely examining how Kobayashi’s upbringing and intellectual history shaped the values of his work, Stephen Prince illuminates the political and religious dimensions of Kobayashi’s films, interpreting them as a prayer for peace in troubled times. Prince draws from a wealth of rare archives, including previously untranslated interviews, material that Kobayashi wrote about his films, and even the young director’s wartime diary. The result is an unprecedented portrait of this singular filmmaker.

Book excerpt: Scholarly interpretations of the collapse of communism and developments thereafter have tended to be primarily concerned with people's need to rid themselves of the communist system, of their past. The expectations, dreams, and hopes that ordinary Eastern Europeans had when they took to the streets in 1989, and have had ever since, have therefore been overlooked - and our understanding of the changes in post-communist Europe has remained incomplete. Focusing primarily on five key areas, such as the heritage of 1989 revolutions, ambivalence, disillusionment, individualism, and collective identities, this book explores the expectations and goals that ordinary Eastern Europeans had during the 1989 revolutions and the decade thereafter, and also the problems and disappointments they encountered in the course of the transformation. The analysis is based on extensive interviews with university students and young intellectuals in the Czech Republic, Eastern Germany and Estonia in the 1990s, which in themselves have considerable value as historical documents.

Book excerpt: The Interpretation of Dreams is a book in which Freud introduces his theory of the unconscious with respect to dream interpretation, and also first discusses what would later become the theory of the Oedipus complex, and it is widely considered one of his most important works. Dreams, in Freud's view, are all forms of wish fulfillment"— attempts by the unconscious to resolve a conflict of some sort, whether something recent or something from the recesses of the past. Psychopathology of Everyday Life is a work based on Freud's researches into slips and parapraxes from 1897 onwards, one which became perhaps the best-known of all his writings. Sometimes called the Mistake Book, the work became one of the scientific classics of the 20th century. Through its stress on what Freud called "switch words" and "verbal bridges", it is considered important for psychopathology. Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious is a book on the psychoanalysis of jokes and humor. In this work, Freud described the psychological processes and techniques of jokes, which he likened as similar to the processes and techniques of dream-work and the Unconscious. Freud claims that our enjoyment of the joke indicates what is being repressed in more serious talk. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the father of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst. In creating psychoanalysis, Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association and discovered transference, establishing its central role in the analytic process.
