Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in angry times. No matter where we go, what we watch, or how we communicate, our culture is rife with division and polarization. Unfortunately, Christians appear to be caught up in the same animosity as the culture at large. While our faith calls us to Christian unity, the hard fact remains: our churches are tragically divided across class, ethnic, gender, and political lines. As these social chasms grow--both inside and outside the church--the role of the preacher becomes paramount. This book issues a prophetic call to pastors to use the influence of their pulpits to promote reconciliation and unity in their churches and communities. Two scholar-practitioners who are experts in homiletics and reconciliation present a practical, 7-step model that empowers faithful leaders to bring healing and peace to their fractured churches and world. The book includes questions for reflection, salient illustrations, and an accountability covenant. It also includes useful appendixes on preaching themes, preaching texts, and sample sermons from three leading preachers: Ralph Douglas West, Rich Villodas, and Sandra Maria Van Opstal.

Book excerpt: Kate Bruce argues that imagination can help to engage the hearer in a sermon which seeks to evoke rather than to inform. Imagination frames how we see the world and ourselves in it. As such it has a vital role in how preachers see the preaching task itself, which in turn affects how we go about the task.

Drawing on influential voices from church history, Abraham Kuruvilla reclaims what has been lost through the centuries and offers fresh insights, showing preachers what they can aim for as an ideal in their preaching. He helps preachers have a better conception of what it means to preach, a fuller understanding of the divinely granted privilege of preaching, and a greater excitement for the preaching ministry. Concluding biblical reflections reinforce the teaching of each chapter.

Book excerpt: Musings of a Country Preacher are the internal thoughts exposed by Robert Coward, a minister, sinner, backslider, and recaptured prisoner of God to do his bidding once more. Robert Coward, with his life experiences; including world travels and education in four institutes of higher learning, have given him a perspective on Christian ideology that is unique, eye opening, and quite controversial in today's post modern world. Claiming to be a pre-modern man who holds fast to conservative, fundamental Christianity, Coward tells it like he believes it is and pulls no punches. Not even when it comes to his personal life. Enter the mind of a man who has been to the far reaches of the planet and back; to the highest highs of a life with God, to the lowest lows of what it's like to be a prodigal son that has now returned to his God. His Facebook group site "The Sword of the Lord", was begun to help others in their walk with God, to stand firm when life goes awry, and to not make the same mistakes as he.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, eminent theologian Stanley Hauerwas shows how the sermon is the best context for doing good theology. He writes, "I am convinced that the recovery of the sermon as the context for theological reflection is crucial if Christians are to negotiate the world in which we find ourselves." The book includes seventeen sermons preached by Hauerwas, which he considers his best theological work and hopes exemplify the work of theology. The sermons are divided into four sections: seeing, saying, living, and events. Titles range from Believing Is Seeing and Was It Fitting for Jesus to Die on a Cross? to Only Fear Can Drive Out Fear and To Be Made Human. Each sermon includes where and when it was preached and references relevant Scripture passages. EXCERPT I have increasingly come to the recognition that one of the most satisfying contexts for doing the work of theology is in sermons. That should not be surprising because throughout Christian history, at least until recently, the sermon was one of the primary places in which the work of theology was done. For the work of theology is first and foremost to exposit scripture. That modern theology has become less and less scriptural, that modern theology has often tried to appear as a form of philosophy, is but an indication of its alienation from its proper work. I am, therefore, making these sermons available because I think they are not only my best theological work, but because I hope they exemplify the work of theology.

Book excerpt: Since childhood I was able to express myself by writing rather than words, and as time went by I found that my chores and responsibilities were baiting me for writing. Since I was a preacher's wife, I more or less kept myself in the background. Yet, I saw the good, the bad and the ugly that needed attention. I prepared the weekly church bulletin, and a monthly church newsletter to the congregation. This gave me the opportunity to express concerns with discretion rather than to verbally embarrass or rebuke individuals. It also gave me the opportunity to reach out to those who had very special needs of healing, both physically and mentally. I found, too, that a pat on the back could be encouraging, and especially to young people. I am certain that everyone who shares with me these writings will find truths, comfort and concern for both self and others. We all have compassion for others in one way or another. This book is designed to open hearts and minds to what is happening about us and around us, and will perhaps become your own thoughts as you reach out to others that have needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'm not a writer. I'm just a man that God called to preach His message of repent or die. The Church in America is dying, not dead yet, but dying. We are like in the book of Jeremiah chapter 7:10 "Then do you come and stand before Me in the house called by My name and insist: We are safe? As a result, you are free to continue doing all these detestable acts" (CHSB). We come to God as if everything is great and we can live as we want. But that is not true everything is not great and we cannot live as we want to. I will explain more about this in this book so please keep reading. Let me explain how God got me to write this book. A friend of mine gave me a book to read called "When a Nation Forgets God: 7 Lessons We Must Learn From Nazi Germany" by Erwin W. Lutzer . It is a great book and got me thinking about Israel in the Old Testament and God's people the church. In Erwin's book he tells a story on page 21 about a small church with a railroad track behind it and as the train would go by the people would sing at the top of their voices to not hear the screams of the Jews. As I sit in my office I can hear a train go by a few miles away, it does not have people in it but it made me think. What is the church doing for a world that is screaming for Hope, Truth, and Peace? We are about to lose our world, if the Church of God does not wake up from its coma and our way of thinking that everything is Great. Thanks for giving me your time, I know we are all short of that time. I have prayed over every word of this book and I would ask that before you go any farther in reading this book you would stop and pray that God will open your heart to what He has for you. Take your time reading and meditating on the words of the Lord. My words will not make any difference in your life or world but God's words will and have changed the world. That is why you will see a lot of scripture printed on these pages. As I have heard many men of God say, I milk a lot of different cows to get my milk. So some of the things written here, I may have read or heard from someone else. But I thank God for bringing them back to my memory.
