Book excerpt: Over the past thirty years the work of Michael Field - the penname of the couple Katharine Bradley and Edith Cooper - has become established as one of the most important, and unique, literary voices of the fin de siècle. Although they are today remembered for their lyric poetry and verse drama, by sheer weight of volume alone, Bradley and Cooper wrote far more prose than poetry. Their diaries contain over a million words, and their letters and notebooks are extensive. Yet little of that prose has been made available to readers without access to the collections at the British Library, London, and the Bodleian Library, Oxford. For a significant period in the 1890s Bradley and Cooper concentrated their energies on prose. A number of the prose works completed between 1889 and 1894 were collected by them in two 'series' under the title For That Moment Only. Inspired by Walter Pater and the latest developments in French literature, these croquis - prose sketches or prose poems - are their most concerted attempt to be 'contemporaneous', to capture fleeting experiences in exquisite prose. Clearly intended at one point for publication, the sketches were abandoned following their decisive break with their mentor Bernard Berenson and his partner Mary Costelloe in 1895. Along with the entire text of For That Moment Only, this volume also brings together Michael Field's published stories and essays, other miscellaneous short prose located within their manuscripts, and their experiments with prose form found in 'Works and Days', their compendious diary. With an extensive scholarly introduction and authoritative notes, the volume places experimental short prose at the heart of Michael Field's creative project, opening Bradley and Cooper's work up to a readership which has hitherto associated them only with lyric poetry and verse drama.

Edmond and Jules de Goncourt’s Manette Salomon (1867), Émile Zola’s Therèse Raquin (1867), Jules Laforgue’s “At the Berlin Aquarium” (1895) and “Impressionism” (1883), Octave Mirbeau’s In the Sky (1892-1893) and Rachilde’s L’Animale (1893) depict vanguard painters and performers as being like animals, whose unique vision revolted against stifling traditions. How have prose poems been identified as such, and why have similar works been excluded from the genre? What happens when we read a work as a prose poem? How have prose genres such as the novel affected prose poetry and modern poetry in general? In Invisible Fences Steven Monte places prose poetry in historical and theoretical perspective by comparing its development in the French and American literary traditions. In spite of its apparent formal freedom, prose poetry is constrained by specific historical circumstances and is constantly engaged in border disputes with neighboring prose and poetic genres. Monte illuminates these constraints through an examination of works that have influenced the development of the prose poem as well as through a discussion of genre theory and detailed readings of poems ranging from Charles Baudelaire's "La Solitude" to John Ashbery's "The System." Monte explores the ways in which literary-historical narratives affect interpretation: why, for example, prose poetry tends to be seen as a revolutionary genre and how this perspective influences readings of individual works. The American poets he discusses include Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Carlos Williams, T. S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein, and Ashbery; the French poets range from Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud, and Stephane Mallarmä to Max Jacob. In exploring prose poetry as a genre, Invisible Fences offers new perspectives not only on modern poetry, but also on genre itself, challenging current theories of genre with a test case that asks for yet eludes definition.
