Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative, blended phenomenological study with 15 first-semester college writing students required to enroll in a first-year seminar course was to understand their lived experience in regards to membership in the creative writing workshop imbedded in this first-year writing class. The questions driving this study were: What is the essence of experience for incoming college students participating in creative writing workshops, and (how) do they perceive and embody the experience of this shared phenomenon in relationship to the evolution of their identities as college writers? What do these lived experience descriptions convey via poetry and prose about students’ needs and desires relative to college writing success? The researcher employed a combination of lifeworld, existential, hermeneutical, and post-intentional phenomenology, examining the processes and products of the workshop as students embodied their experiences, anxieties, and evolving identities through their own creative texts. Transformative learning, experiential learning, reflexivity, reflective learning, and Schlossberg’s transition theories formed the theoretical foundation of this inquiry. Through phenomenological data analysis, the findings demonstrate, in students’ own words, the need for approaches that scaffold students as they develop confident college student identities, college writing skills, and new networks of peer support to help ease matriculation from home to college lifeworlds. Findings suggest that the creative writing workshop may help to meet all of these related needs for first-semester, first-year students, including those at risk of attrition, and may merit broader inclusion and availability in first-year college writing courses.
