Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heated debates about "what really happened in Waco" are a recurring public drama. Yet, little or no attention has been given to the work of the negotiators who talked with the Branch Davidians. In this important book, Jayne Seminare Docherty utilizes largely unexplored sources of data to explain why fifty-one days of negotiations by federal officials failed to get all of the Branch Davidians to exit the compound. Learning Lessons from Waco applies a theory of worldview conflicts to the more than 12,000 pages of the negotiation transcripts from Waco. Through perceptive analysis of the situation, Docherty offers a fresh perspective on the activities of law enforcement agents. She shows how the Waco conflict resulted from a collision of two distinct worldviews—the FBI's and the Davidians'—and their divergent notions of reality. By exploring the failures of the negotiations, she also urges a better understanding of encounters between rising religious movements and dominant social institutions. Finally, the resulting model is applicable to other conflict resolution processes such as mediation and facilitated problem solving.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education is the heart of a successful nation. A learning nation is a successful nation. The nation that fails to educate its citizens faces numerous challenges such as social problems, financial problems, and rebellion. But for the success of education there should be enough and good teachers to teach students. In many countries, the number of good teachers is diminishing as the teaching career is becoming less attractive to a number of students because of the problems that are associated to teaching. It is imperative for the governments to come up with measures to increase the number of teachers in schools. It is unchallenged that teachers are one of the vital elements of education system. Therefore they need to be motivated and retained. Furthermore, the education system can be effective if the students are prepared to learn. It is very difficult for the teachers to impart knowledge to students that have barriers of education such as poor behavior. Therefore, parents have an important role to play to ensure that students come to school prepared to learn and without any barriers to education. It is the responsibility of the government and organizations to retain and motivate teachers. Systems of education will be successful if they are supported by the government, organizations, communities, parents, learners, and teachers. There should be good structures in the education system to produce more teachers who will be responsible in educating the nation. The death of a good system of education would drive the nation back to a time of ignorance where uneducated people will become leaders of nations.

Book excerpt: Bill Schneider, former CNN senior political analyst, takes us inside the voting booth in “a detailed examination of recent presidential elections studded with sharp observations…A good choice for political junkies” (Kirkus Reviews). In the 1960s, a rift developed between the Old America and the New America that resulted in a populist backlash that ultimately elected Donald Trump in 2016. Bill Schneider describes today’s American populism in Standoff as one that is economically progressive and culturally conservative. Liberals are attacked as cultural elitists (“limousine liberals”), and conservatives as economic elitists (“country club conservatives”). Trump, says Schneider, is the complete populist package. He embraces social populism (anti-immigrant), economic populism (anti-free trade), and isolationism (“America First”). Standoff examines a number of hard-fought elections to show us how we got to Trump. He asserts the power of public opinion. He points to the public that draws the line on abortion and affirmative action. He shows why an intense minority cancels a majority on gun control, immigration, small government, and international interests. Standoff tells us why fifty years of presidential contests have often been confounding. It takes us inside to watch how and why Americans pull the lever, how they choose their issues, and select their leaders. It is usually values that trump economics. Required reading for an understanding of the 2016 election and the political future, Schneider’s “fast-paced” (Publishers Weekly) Standoff shows how Americans vote and why their votes sometimes seem to make no practical sense.
