As the largest one of the marginal seas separating Asia from the Paci?c, the largest continent from the largest ocean, the SCS functions as a focal point in land-sea int- actions of the Earth system. Climatically, the SCS is located between the Western Paci?c Warm Pool, the centre of global heating at the sea level, and the Tibetan Plateau, the centre of heating at an altitude of 5,000m. Geomorphologically, the SCS lies to the east of the highest peak on earth, Zhumulangma or Everest in the Himalayas (8,848m elevation) and to the west of the deepest trench in the ocean, Philippine Trench (10,497m water depth) (Wang P. 2004). Biogeographically, the SCS belongs to the so-called “East Indies Triangle” where modern marine and terrestrial biodiversity reaches a global maximum (Briggs 1999). Among the major marginal sea basins from the west Paci?c, the SCS presents some of the best conditions for accumulating complete paleoclimatic records in its hemipelagic deposits. These records are favorable for high-resolution pa- oceanographic studies because of high sedimentation rates and good carbonate preservation. It may not be merely a coincidence that two cores from the southern 14 SCS were among the ?rst several cores in the world ocean used by AMS C dating for high-resolution stratigraphy (Andree et al. 1986; Broecker et al. 1988).

New surface and subsurface basins have been identified; fossils abound in strata that only recently were considered barren; oil exploration is being actively pursued in continental strata of the Richmond-Taylorsville, Sanford and Newark basins, Late Triassic marine strata have been identified in Georges Bank off the coast of Massachusetts, and the roles of wrench tectonics, successor basins and listric normal faults have challenged the classical view that these are simple extensional basins.This two part work brings together representative examples of these studies. It is not intended as an exhaustive synthesis of the subject, but rather a vehicle to present new data, new ideas and alternative views. Some of the papers present regional summaries, others attempt to relate local features to regional questions, while others describe modern rift basins as possible analogs of early Mesozoic basins.Geologic data from the Atlantic passive margins record that continental rifting of central Pangaea occurred during the latest Triassic-earliest Jurassic (Liassic), and that sea-floor spreading probably began no later than the Middle Jurassic. The primary subject of this book focuses on the Triassic-Jurassic rifting events that led to the breakup of Pangaea and the opening of the central Atlantic Ocean. Whereas other treatises have focused on the origin of the passive margins, inferred primarily from geophysical data of the offshore basins, this volume primarily and uniquely focuses on land-based field studies of the onshore synrift basins. Offshore studies of synrift basins are also included and add substantially to our understanding of the breakup. However, the onshore data base, while complementary, is different, thus providing researchers with a different insight to the questions at hand.The book is organized into four sections. Section I, Pangaean Plate in Time and Space, first locates Pangaea in space and then places the Triassic basins within an historical context on the Alleghanian-Variscan Orogens. Section 2, the offshore and onshore basins of the North American and African Plates, comprises about 70% of all papers in this book, and includes papers on structural geology, petrology, paleontology, sedimentation, organic geochemistry, vulcanism and mineral resources. Section 3, Related Mesozoic Atlantic Rift Basins, includes papers on Iberia, Western Europe, the Benue Trough and Brazil. The final section of the book, Analogs, includes the rift basins of East Africa, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Elat (Aqaba), the Dead Sea and the Rio Grande.The book is richly illustrated throughout with figures, photographs, tables and fold-out maps, including nine in full colour.

Understanding the architecture and evolution of this unusually preserved tectonic environment allow critique of the transition between continental rifting and ocean spreading that may not be immediately apparent from relatively sparse data in ancient examples, and enable assessment of the tectonic drivers of ocean basin formation. This thesis presents an integrated study of field investigation from the Farasan Islands, remote sensing data and interpretation and modeling of regional geophysical datasets throughout the Red Sea. Field work investigation of the Farasan Islands indicated that the stratigraphic succession that form part of the Farasan Bank. The outcrop of the Farasan Islands consists of a Miocene shale unit, overlain by Pliocene marly limestone unit, overlain inturn by reefal limestone unit. In the subsurface, a thick evaporate succession up to 4 km underlies the Farasan Bank. The evaporate succession comprises eight prominent salt domes in the Farasan bank based on the modeling of the observed gravity gradient constrained by wells data. Salt diapirs sourced from Miocene evaporites have resulted in Salt doming with elongate geometries parallel or orthogonal to the axis of the Red Sea rift axis, suggesting diapirism was influenced by existing basement structures The Farasan limestone's have been deformed by salt diapirsm into a varies of mapped structures including normal faults, salt domes, anticlinal salt ridges solution holes and collapse breccia. The islands show evidence of resent extensional faults away from the mid ocean ridge, suggesting that separation between the Arabian and African plates is not taken up by extension along the mid ocean ridge alone. Gravity data were collected during field work in Ras Hasis and Kilah area to obtain high resolution data. The structure observations during filed work is supported by the gravity data as it show that these areas features are presented by low gravity anomaly and largely controlled by extensional tectonics. These have a prevailing NW-SE orientation that is parallel to the present day coast, the orientation of the islands and the current mid oceanic ridge. The data also confirm that the islands are strongly faulted as a result of salt diapirism, many of the faults being parallel to the rift axis in NW-SE.An integrated synthesis of aeromagnetic, gravity and seismic refraction data along the Arabian shelf (Farasan Bank) and part of the Arabian Shield at southern Red Sea show remarkable complexity for the opening of the Red Sea, including multiple episodes of spreading, several failed attempts of rifting along the Arabian Escarpment, and ongoing crustal extension on the flanks of the mid ocean ridge as salt tectonics taken control in the modern environment, which have not been documented or interpreted in the past. Seven magnetic stripes identified in aeromagnetic data using different processing techniques. Modeling of the potential-field datasets illustrate that the Farasan Bank is likely to be floored by oceanic and transition crust based on the magnetic anomalies wavelength characteristic and behavior and density variation, which calls into question the concept that the Arabian Shelf represents a passive margin. The model illustrates the effectiveness of integrating potential field data for tectonic analysis of modern systems. Modelling of global potential field datasets shows that the architecture of the Red Sea is more complex with a resent spreading restricted to the southern and central sectors whereas the northern and southernmost Red Sea are still floored by thinned continental crust. These models marked variations in the crustal structure along the entire length of the Red Sea. The architecture suggests that ocean basin initiation occurs initially as a series of cells or windows surrounded by transitional crust along the strike of the Red Sea. These observations suggest that the Red Sea is not linked with the Gulf of Aden and the global rift network, nor does the observation support tectonic models that suggest oceans unzip or that the Afar plume is a primary control for the initiation of the Red Sea.

Although demonstrating similar behavior relative to bottom water dynamics, rather rare and poorly studied calcareous contourites differ from their terrigenous analogs in origin, grain-size distribution, chemical and mineral composition of sedimentary particles. The detailed multidisciplinary study of the Ioffe Drift produces new knowledge on biogenic contourites deposited in pelagic realm, in conditions of low biological productivity and terrigenous material supply, under the influence of the Antarctic Bottom Water flow from the Vema Channel. The major intervals of prevailing erosion are inferred on the drift from 2.51/2.59 to 1.9 Ma and from 1.6 to 0.81 Ma thus indicating strong paleoceanographic changes most likely associated with the reorganization of deep-sea circulation and increased bottom water production in the Southern Ocean during the Early Pleistocene and, in particular, around the Mid-Pleistocene Transition.
