Book excerpt: Leslie Schwartz's powerful, skillfully woven memoir of redemption and reading, as told through the list of books she read as she served a 90 day jail sentence In 2014, novelist Leslie Schwartz was sentenced to 90 days in Los Angeles County Jail for a DUI and battery of an officer. It was the most harrowing and holy experience of her life. Following a 414-day relapse into alcohol and drug addiction after more than a decade clean and sober, Schwartz was sentenced and served her time with only six months' sobriety. The damage she inflicted that year upon her friends, her husband, her teenage daughter, and herself was nearly impossible to fathom. Incarceration might have ruined her altogether, if not for the stories that sustained her while she was behind bars--both the artful tales in the books she read while there, and, more immediately, the stories of her fellow inmates. With classics like Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome to contemporary accounts like Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken, Schwartz's reading list is woven together with visceral recollections of both her daily humiliations and small triumphs within the county jail system. Through the stories of others--whether rendered on the page or whispered in a jail cell--she learned powerful lessons about how to banish shame, use guilt for good, level her grief, and find the lost joy and magic of her astonishing life. Told in vivid, unforgettable prose, The Lost Chapters uncovers the nature of shame, rage, and love, and how instruments of change and redemption come from the unlikeliest of places.

Book excerpt: A positive transformation of the heart and soul is methodically pursued in this 31-day recovery devotional. Attitudes can improve. Good habits can solidify. Choices become healthier. Scar tissues heal and relationships can mend. By faith, we can reach beyond the fallout of our mistakes, wounded identities, hardened hearts and misfortunes. We can begin to experience the peace and joy which Christ intends for us. To fail in one’s recovery is to live in defeat; it is to be miserable no matter how well-disguised. The poisoned arrows from the pit are many. Discouragement gets piled high as we look into the condemning mirror of lies pushed in front of our face each day by the accuser. Defeated under the weight of our failure and nearsightedness, we lose hope. Our Redeemer offers an amazingly reasonable answer. In-Christ, we can daily receive the power and initiative to reach above and beyond self. We’re given the courage to deliberately choose Truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Freedom is not free,” it took me nearly forty-years to realize this fact about freedom. It was not until I fully embraced the grace and love of God and the Lord Jesus Christ, that I experienced true freedom. This book gives a concise description of the byways and highways I took in order to arrive at the point in my life where I could honestly say, “FREE AT LAST, THANK GOD ALMIGHTY, I AM FREE AT LAST!” In the course of me going from a man who spent 3/5th of his life behind prison bars and insane asylum fences. I can tell you that freedom was wasted on me as long as I took it for granted. I was delivered from all the mental, emotional and spiritual shackles that held me bound, the day I gave my life over to God. Now I can declare that I not only talk about the joy of being free, but can also testify that there is no more liberating freedom than that which comes with Christs’ blood bought Salvation, and the peace of mind that the Father gives all those “whose mind is stayed on Him.” It is my belief that none of us can get the full benefit out of freedom in its true form until we understand that, “The One we serve determines the rewards we get for our servitude.” The reality is, that as long as we live on this earth, we are going to serve either God and Jesus, or Satan and our flesh. Trust me when I tell you, “Your life will be a hundred times better off if you commit yourself to being in the will of God.” I hope that you will read my testimony as it is summed up in this small book, and know that what Jesus did for me, once I accepted the freedom he purchased for me on the Cross of Calvary, he will do the same thing for you.

Book excerpt: Based on a study of over 400 women worldwide, Runaway Husbands: The Abandoned Wife's Guide to Recovery and Renewal, is the first book to explore and offer healing strategies to women whose lives have been turned upside down by Wife Abandonment Syndrome. This Revised and Updated edition expands on the groundbreaking first edition that led to the development of an amazing global community of women working together to recover from Wife Abandonment Syndrome - when a husband leaves out-of-the-blue from what his wife believed to be a happy, secure marriage. Following his sudden departure, he typically replaces the caring he'd previously shown her with blame and anger, leaving his bewildered wife totally devastated. The Revised and Updated edition includes new chapters that discuss the husband's possible Covert Narcissism, the effect of this kind of divorce on the father/adult child relationship and the challenges of co-parenting with an ex following abandonment. Written by family therapist Vikki Stark, MSW, who herself had a runaway husband, the book helps women understand in full what could motivate a loving husband to morph overnight into an uncaring stranger and provides them with the tools they need to move forward and rebuild their lives.

Book excerpt: Real adventures are not always coming out of the make believe book factories. Instead the most fascinating and entertaining one are generated by the life. The Hidden River is such a story. A very young man caught in the infernal maelstrom of the World War two, his struggle for survival in an environment of carnage, destruction and hopelessness and of his discovery that sometimes challenges in life are the tools that makes us understand that we are more than we think we are. His adventures are endless, hard to believe but fascinating as they take us to a world few of us can imagine was existing. Victories are not always won by cloak and dagger plot. Sometime survival itself is the victory and endurance and resourcefulness are needed. The war ended .By a miraculous set of events he was able to come to the USA, then meet Frank Lloyd Wright, the famous Architect, then go on with a normal life. But his mental balance had been shattered and he was in need of healing and directions he went on another adventure, the one of self discovery. From Frank Lloyd Wright he had glimpsed the world of beauty harmony and creativity. Not enough for him for, he needed the reassurance that all was not misery and ugliness in the world. A fateful meeting with Paramhansa Yogananda, the great Yogi, gave him the spiritual and mental direction he had been lacking .The new adventure of his Recovery is the last part of the book!

Book excerpt: This publication makes available to historians and general readers a little-known document mapping the achievement of a crucial initiative in the plans for recovery from the harshest blows of the Great Depression, in one of America’s hardest-hit states. It presents a historically unique case history of the Federal Civil Works Administration, established by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. The CWA addressed the issues of unemployment and destitution brought on by the Depression, specifically in Michigan. With a contextualizing introduction and afterword by historian James R. Anderson, the republication of this report—with its wealth of data and statistics, and its compelling information about the extent of the crisis and of the government’s initiatives—brings to light fascinating aspects of how critical (and impactful) such interventions were in the context of unprecedented economic challenges.
