At thirteen, he ran away from home to look for a better life but found only trouble. Not long after, he began to drink and use drugs. At sixteen he lived on the streets full time and hitchhiked around the United States. For a decade he wandered aimlessly. Joe recalled a time when he took a hit of purple microdot LSD and tripped all night long. He saw an uninterrupted stream of pictures and shapes with a beautiful, kaleidoscopic play of colors which streamed on the walls and ceiling in a circular motion around the room. It was a long slow bad trip. He felt dirty, in need of a shower, and bad about the general direction of his life. About eight hours later the trip faded away and he finally passed out. When Joe revived his body early the next day, he squinted and pulled back the curtains. The world was covered in ice from the storm; there wasn't a cloud in the sky and the morning sun reflected off everything. It hurt his eyes but it was a beautiful sight. He opened the window to get some air. It was cold and crisp and it felt good as the freshness filled his lungs. "A new day had dawned." After seventeen years of drug and self-inflicted abuse Joe cried out to Jesus Christ for help. He asked Him, if he was real, then come down from heaven and set him free. He did! A few weeks later on Palm Sunday Joe attended a church service and it was on that day that God revealed himself to him even more. At the end of the service as everyone was leaving, the church prophet made a loud statement; "If you have not been baptize with the Holy Ghost you're missing out on everything good God has for you!" As Joe was almost at the church exit he heard the words of the prophet. He walked back to the altar, stood in front of the man of God, held out his right hand, and said; "I'll take me a Holy Ghost!" The prophet poured oil on Joe's head and prayed for him. He heard and felt powerful waves of energy rip through his body and felt as if he floated. Time seemed to have paused. He felt darkness leave his body. After a while the wonderful experience lifted. Joe felt a sense of awe and pureness. He took a few minutes to regain his composure, then slowly walked down the aisle, opened the church doors and stood at the entrance. The atmosphere was illuminated and he felt pure and peaceful. "A new day had dawned." Later that night when Joe went back for the evening service, he saw the church filled-up with a see through golden fog.

Pastor Kelly Lohrke brings home the reality so many of us, including myself, have come to realize, that the answer to all of life's questions and problems can be found in one person, Jesus Christ. I strongly recommend this book to anyone, both those seeking answers and those secure in their relationships with Christ. It's the story of coming out of the darkness into the light!"

Book excerpt: Step inside a fascinating world of Jews who relate to their Jewishness through the vehicle of punk—from prominent figures in the history of punk to musicians who proudly put their Jewish identity front and center. Why did punk—a subculture and music style characterized by a rejection of established norms—appeal to Jews? How did Jews who were genuinely struggling with their Jewish identity find ways to express it through punk rock? Oy Oy Oy Gevalt! Jews and Punk explores the cultural connections between Jews and punk in music and beyond, documenting how Jews were involved in the punk movement in its origins in the 1970s through the present day. Author Michael Croland begins by broadly defining what the terms "Jewish" and "punk" mean. This introduction is followed by an exploration of the various ways these ostensibly incompatible identities can gel together, addressing topics such as Jewish humor, New York City, the Holocaust, individualism, "tough Jews," outsider identity, tikkun olam ("healing the world"), and radicalism. The following chapters discuss prominent Jews in punk, punk rock bands that overtly put their Jewishness on display, and punk influences on other types of Jewish music—for example, klezmer and Hasidic simcha (celebration) music. The book also explores ways that Jewish and punk culture intersect beyond music, including documentaries, young adult novels, zines, cooking, and rabbis.

Book excerpt: Marriage is a bond that requires hard work from two people in order to find happiness--find all the tips and tools to a happily-ever-after using the guidance of a trusted relationship expert. The reality of marriage is... there are no secrets to making marriage work. You may never enjoy the image you have concocted of what a happy or beautiful marriage looks like or what great kids look like. Rather, in getting to your successful ending, you may experience much of the following: You are so dog-tired of each other that your sex life will become inactive or uninspiring. You will forget about communication boundaries and say whatever is on your mind because you are fed up! There will be tears; there may be cursing; there could be screaming. Prayers may help, but don't take away the pain. Conventional wisdom will say, "That's a marriage that's on its last leg. It's about to crash and burn." But according to Pastor Cal Roberson, this is a marriage that's setting the foundation for a beautiful reset. Marriage Ain't for Punks is a relationship game changer. It is a straight-forward and unapologetic dive into why people fail or struggle at one of the most popular and sought-after unions in modern and ancient society. It is more than a book about marriage. It is a book about how to manage life with another person by probing into the heart of the readers and forces them to confront themselves and be accountable for their own emotions and actions. Transparency, honesty, and downright fearlessness are the traits that make great marriages. They refuse to allow pettiness to destroy the beauty they do have. They are not weaklings. They are not quitters. The realize that Marriage Ain't for Punks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of 6, Phillip found himself repeating the words of the pastor at Vacation Bible School. Unsure exactly of what he had just did, he was quickly ushered into the waters of baptism. Still uncertain of the significance of the Gospel, the Atonement, and the work of Christ on the Cross-all beliefs he purportedly confessed-Phillip began to ask questions about these teachings as he grew into a teenager. Still holding to the assurance of "once saved, always saved," he began to turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with the struggles of life. Though professing Christ, the life he lived reflected a man who denied Christ's authority over his life. In Practical Atheist, Phillip uses his life experience and the path that he took to examine the dangers of easy-believism in the Church and the importance of having a solid grasp on the implications of one's theology. By looking at the implications of the "sinners prayer" and "asking Jesus into your heart," coupled with an incorrect understanding of "once saved, always saved," Phillip provides a clear and concise case for the biblical Gospel and hope for future glory.

Book excerpt: Now a New York Times bestselling author, Nadia Bolz-Weber takes no prisoners as she reclaims the term "pastrix"(pronounced "pas-triks," a term used by some Christians who refuse to recognize female pastors) in her messy, beautiful, prayer-and-profanity laden narrative about an unconventional life of faith. Heavily tattooed and loud-mouthed, Nadia, a former stand-up comic, sure as hell didn't consider herself to be religious leader material—until the day she ended up leading a friend's funeral in a smoky downtown comedy club. Surrounded by fellow alcoholics, depressives, and cynics, she realized: These were her people. Maybe she was meant to be their pastor. Using life stories—from living in a hopeful-but-haggard commune of slackers and her unusual but undeniable spiritual calling to her experiences pastoring people from all walks of life—and poignant honesty, Nadia portrays a woman who is both deeply faithful and deeply flawed, giving hope to the rest of us along the way. Wildly entertaining and deeply resonant, this is the book for people who hunger for a bit of hope that doesn't come from vapid consumerism; for women who talk too loud and guys who love chick flicks; and for the gay person who loves Jesus and won't be shunned by the church. In short, this book is for every misfit suspicious of institutionalized religion but who is still seeking transcendence and mystery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God's Refugee spans the first thirty years of Rev. John Chol Daau's life as a boy pastor, wandering refugee, and Anglican priest. The story begins in the rural and indigenous culture of the Jieng people in the small village of Baping. John is born into a dark spiritual world in which the ancestor gods must be appeased. Under the leadership of his uncle, and with only one copy of the New Testament, John begins a Christian movement within the village in which nearly a thousand people turn to Christ. Baping receives the message of Christ with joy, and at that tender moment, their village is invaded and destroyed. John is forced to run and hide in the wilderness and refugee camps of East Africa. As an orphan and refugee, John is denied every advantage in life, but God makes a way for him. Miraculously, he receives an education and a call to be a minister. John begins teaching the Christian faith to thousands of refugees and displaced persons from all over East Africa. Ultimately, John becomes, as his uncle prophesied at his birth, Chol Makeyn, "a true compensator for his people." "God's Refugee is not a work of fiction but a story of the lives of real people - South Sudanese Christians, victims of a war inflicted by the regime in Khartoum. I was there many times during that war and witnessed the indescribable suffering of the people, agonizing over the death of loved ones, enduring excruciating physical torture, and tragic displacement from their homes. But I was always profoundly humbled and inspired by the ways in which people such as Rev. John Chol Daau retained a living, radiant faith through their anguish. Theirs is a story that needs to be told as a celebration of the power of the God whom they worship and a challenge to us to be worthy of their faith." -The Baroness (Caroline) Cox, Member of the House of Lords and CEO HART (Humanitarian Relief Trust) Published in connection with Hartline Literary Agency, serving the Christian book community. Book excerpt: Read the inspiring story of David Pierce, the lead singer of the band "No Longer Music" and founder of the world-wide mission organization Steiger International. In the early 1980s, at the height of the European punk rock movement, David Pierce started a Bible study on a barge (called Steiger 14) behind Central Station in Amsterdam, Holland reaching disenfranchised young people of that city. It was there that David started a band called "No Longer Music" (NLM) to use as a tool to communicate the Gospel of Jesus to these young people who would never step foot into a church.Since then, David has taken the message of Jesus to some of the darkest corners of society, including closed Islamic countries, terrorist clubs, squatter villages, anarchy festivals, brothels, junkie joints, punk & goth music festivals, Satanist clubs and New Age gatherings.

Situating Christian punk within the modern history of Christianity and the rapidly changing culture of spirituality and secularity, this book illustrates how Christian punk continues punk's autonomous and oppositional creative practices, but from within a typically traditional evangelical morality. Analyzing straight edge Christian abstinence and punk-friendly churches, this book also focuses on gender performance within a subculture dominated by young men in a time of contested gender roles and ideologies. Critically-minded and rich in ethnographic data and insider perspectives, Christian Punk will engage scholars of contemporary evangelicalism, religion and popular music, and punk and all its related subcultures.

Book excerpt: Punk rock ethics and philosophy are to question everything, do not except things just because you are told to do so, but instead learn about them yourself so that YOU can make your own decisions. And contrary to popular belief Punk is not about being lazy, it's about D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself). It's about not conforming to the norm! Punk rock also has a very freestyle spirit, it's about being different, distinct, not like everybody else! This is what originally attracted me to Punk rock and later the Gothic rock movement. Being L.D.S. (Latter-day Saint) is also about questioning everything, up to and including our eternal heavenly father. It's about not being what the world expects you to be. But instead standing up for what is right and not ignoring what is wrong! And through the course of this, being different and distinct is a way of life in the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. If this is not Punk Rock, I don't know what is? This is my story that has taken me from Catholicism to Mormonism, from Paganism to Buddhism and from crazy punk rock insanity to dark, morbid, gothic rock death & gloom. Then on to Pentecostal/Evangelical Christianity and finally back to just me and my personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It's a story about searching for answers, especially the age, old questions of: who are we? Where do we come from? And where do we go after we die? It's about trusting our heavenly father and realizing that Jesus Christ really loves us and deeply cares about our well being both temporal and spiritual. Most importantly it's about developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, he is here for us no matter what we do and wants us to be happy and for this reason died for us, so that we could be set free. To give us a chance to be happy, to be with him...

As I talked, I felt death cover my body. I felt cold, clammy, and my skin began to turn gray. I knew that I was going to visit God. So I asked Him one more time to please tell my parents that I love them, that I forgive them, and to please ask them if they would forgive me.My bed was by the window and I lay down and tried to relax, but I could not calm down. It was difficult to breath. I paced the floor like a caged animal. I needed some fresh air but I was afraid to go outside. I knew the police were out there, so I climbed onto my bed, opened the shutters, and stuck my head out the window. My mustache and hair got singed. Large flames poured out of the hotel windows and rolled up the side of the exterior wall. Around two hundred firemen, police officers, and spectators stood on the pavement and watched. Under my window, the firemen held what looked to be a large round canvas with a red bull's-eye in the middle. The firemen yelled at me to jump onto the canvas. They said that if I didn't jump that I would surly burn to death. I climbed onto the windowsill. Tongues of fire leapt all around me. I yelled to the firemen that on the count of three I would jump. I looked directly into the bull's eye and counted, “One!” “One!” The people cheered. “Two!” I yelled. “Two!” The people cheered. Then I yelled with all my strength as I prepared to jump, “THREE!” Two hundred plus people, regular citizens, firemen, police and paramedics yelled, “THREE” I was ready to jump but at the moment I was about to push off, I heard a distant scream from my right, “Joey, help!” It was a woman's voice and I stopped because only close family called me Joey. The screams became more urgent, “Joey, help! Joey, help!” I looked to my right and saw a young lady with long golden curly blond hair just like my sister Terri, in a silk non-revealing transparent gold nighty leaning out of a window, four rooms to the right. Fire from inside her room danced all around her and leaped into the air. She had no choice, either jump or burn. We caught eyes for what seemed like an eternity. I told her to jump first and commanded the firemen to place the canvas in front of her window. “No, you need to jump first,” the fire chief said. "I am from the South and it would be disrespectful to save my life before saving that ladies life first!" I said. The chief argued with me about who was to jump first. It seemed a little fishy to me that he argued with me in such a desperate situation. Then I realized that the fire chief was the same guy as the SWAT guy that shot up Larry's room earlier. That stunned me but the lady definitely needed help before me. I screamed to the chief that I wasn't going first. He yielded and told the men to bring the canvas over to the lady. She jumped safely onto the canvas and the people cheered and applauded. By now a few hundred people stood on the pavement with the firemen, police, and paramedics. The firemen called out to me, "Jump." "Jump, jump, jump!" the crowd chanted. “I'll jump on the count of three!” I yelled out. They already knew the routine. “One!” I yelled. “One!” the people chanted. “Two!” I yelled “Two!” The crowd chanted. “Three!” I yelled. The people applauded and chanted, “Three!” With a hero's confidence and a star's charisma, I stood in the windowsill and prepared to jump. I let go of the windowsill and pushed off with my legs. As I was in the air Time Stopped Still, the parking lot, fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, and crowd of hundreds moved side to side like a pendulum. An invisible hand hit me square in the chest and thrust me back through the window and onto my bed! In a panic, I ran out of the room, down the hallway, and into the bathroom shut the door and locked it. I turned the shower on and fell asleep.

Book excerpt: Michele Andrea Bowen made a name for herself years ago during the African-American inspirational fiction craze. Now, in Pastor Needs a Boo, she's back with an amazing journey of faith, drama, and love. It was a regular New Jerusalem Gospel United Church work day for Reverend Denzelle Flowers when Veronica Washington, Keisha Jackson, and Marsha Metcalf showed up after losing their jobs on the same day, same morning, and almost at the same time. Denzelle struggled to solve that first problem. The other problem—the lovely Marsha—would be much harder to solve. Denzelle didn't even know how to fight wanting to turn in the playah's card and getting "booed" up with the poster girl for "church girls." Marsha Metcalf and her fellow unemployed church members aren't Denzelle's biggest problem, though. He is running for bishop, and his enemies—a more ruthless consortium of corrupted clergy—want power badly enough to go to rather extreme lengths for it because the stakes are just that high. Now, his ex-wife was back and sleeping with the enemy, digging for dirt. Reverend Denzelle can't fight this battle alone. This pastor needs a ‘boo' who will stand by his side. Before the dust settles, both Marsha and Denzelle's faith and love will be put to the ultimate test.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Witnessing Suburbia is a lively cultural analysis of the conservative shift in national politics that transformed the United States during the Reagan-Bush era. Eileen Luhr focuses on two fundamental aspects of this shift: the suburbanization of evangelicalism and the rise of Christian popular culture, especially popular music. Taking us from the Jesus Freaks of the late 1960s to Christian heavy metal music to Christian rock festivals and beyond, she shows how evangelicals succeeded in "witnessing" to America's suburbs in a consumer idiom. Luhr argues that the emergence of a politicized evangelical youth culture in fact ranks as one of the major achievements of "third wave" conservatism in the late twentieth century.
