Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Danny, and my "stage" Last name used to be Vegas. Danny Vegas, that was me, but that was years ago. Back when I was starring in a reality TV show for PLAYBOY TV. A show in which I followed my dreams of becoming an Adult Filmmaker. I was around twenty three years old and having the time of my life, on and off screen. However, my venture into the porn world and into a debaucerous sexual lifestyle came way before I was on TV doing it. I had a devious sexual hunger, and that, paired with good looks and a passion for alcohol, took me on an outrageous, eye bulging and enthrawling path throughout my late teens and early twenties, promptly landing me somehow, stumbling into the porn industry where the adventures only grew! The brief but glorious success of the TV show gave me the opportunity to follow my dreams even further, allowing me to move to Los Angeles and try to make it big, either in porn, or mainstream, which, since the end of the show, I'd been leaning heavily toward. With my long time friend alcohol, I set out on a new path in L.A, but after some time, and no success, I had to move back home. But that didn't stop me from both keeping my dreams alive, and continuing on with highly entertaining, booze fueled adventures, that if nothing else, make for some pretty fucking great stories. All of those stories, from my man-slutting high school days, through my entry and exit in the porn industry, and all the drunken shenanigans afterward, are all right here. I figured they were probably worth sharing. I Hope you enjoy.

Book excerpt: Speak Gently is the story of a young girl from a wealthy New York family, growing up on a dairy farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Her seemingly idyllic childhood shatters when her parents separate, and she and her brothers are kidnapped by their father, and then taken to a town in New Mexico called Santa Fe. The ensuing war between her parents creates deep wounds within the family. As tensions increase, she is shuffled off to a boarding school for children with special needs, the Anderson School, in Staatsburg, New York. Here she is forced to keep afloat in an environment where she feels she doesn't belong. Balancing humor and heartbreak, this moving memoir recounts a unique family history from the eyes of a teenage girl trying to come to terms with her life. A story about the traumatic effects of divorce and kidnapping, it highlights the human spirit to survive.

Book excerpt: Following her success with Playboy Swings, Patty Farmer looks at Playboy’s relationship with comedians and cartoonists in her new book Playboy Laughs. Playboy Laughs invites readers onto the sets of the organization’s groundbreaking TV shows, Playboy Penthouse and Playboy After Dark. These popular variety series brought top-tier comedians, impressionists, and monologists—as well as the finest musicians—into people’s homes each week. Readers will learn how before he ever dreamed of conquering the magazine publishing world—and along the way establish a worldwide brand—Hugh Hefner harbored aspirations of making his mark in the world as a cartoonist. Playboy Laughs delves into the darker aspects of the time as well, tackling the ways Playboy and its comedy stars helped break down social and racial barriers as well as sexual ones. Known for her devotion to meticulous research and clear, honest storytelling, Farmer has gained the full cooperation of the Playboy organization—and Hugh Hefner himself—making this not only an entertaining read but a trustworthy history of an under-appreciated aspect of American comic culture.

Book excerpt: 'Potentially... one of the best; or at least one of the most intriguing Obama books to be published'. Robaroundbooks.com A mixture of anecdotes about the author's own growing up in one of America's most formidable Black communities, mixed in with observations on the origins and progress of the music of the South Side: gospel, blues, soul and jazz, and Barack and Michelle Obama's relation to the sound of their community. The Guardian Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, London based author and playwright Bonnie Greer seeks to demonstrate that Barack Obama's Presidency is what she calls a 'South Side Presidency'. And that it is only the South Side of Chicago, with its history and culture and institutions that could have sent an African American, in this day and age, to the White House. 'Obama Music' is a mixture of anecdotes about her own growing up in one of America's most formidable Black communities, mixed in with observations on the origins and progress of the music of the South Side: gospel, blues, soul and jazz, and Barack and Michelle Obama's relation to the sound of their community. All of this is woven in with history ranging from the Great Migration at the end of World War One, to the and of the 60's, an era Obama himself has stated that he feels close to. This is not a conventional history book, nor a reporter-on-the campaign-trail account. 'Obama Music' is one African American woman's account of watching, from the other side of the ocean, history being made, a history rooted in the community of her birth, right in her own home town. Small, opinionated, personal, anecdotal and full of music and insights, this book can sit alongside the more heavyweight tomes as a footnote to the phenomenon that is Obama Music.

Book excerpt: Perhaps all of Jonathan Ames’ problems–and the genesis of this hilarious book–can be traced back to the late onset of his puberty. After all it can’t be easy to be sixteen with a hairless “undistinguishable from that of a five year old’s.” This wonderfully entertaining memoir is a touching and humorous look at life in New York City. But this is life for an author who can proclaim “my first sexual experience was rather old-fashioned: it was with a prostitute”–an author who can talk about his desire to be a model for the Hair Club for Men and about meeting his son for the first time. Often insightful, sometimes tender, always witty and self-deprecating, What’s Not to Love? is an engaging memoir from one of our most funny, most daring writers.

Book excerpt: Some vampires are good. Some are evil. Some are faking it to get girls. Awkward and allergic to the sun, sixteen-year-old Finbar Frame never gets the girl. But when he notices that all the female students at his school are obsessed with a vampire romance novel called Bloodthirsty, Finbar decides to boldly go where no sane guy has gone before-he becomes a vampire, minus the whole blood sucking part. With his brooding nature and weirdly pale skin, it's surprisingly easy for Finbar to pretend to be paranormal. But, when he meets the one girl who just might like him for who he really is, he discovers that his life as a pseudo-vampire is more complicated than he expected. This hilarious debut novel is for anyone who believes that sometimes even nice guys-without sharp teeth or sparkly skin-- can get the girl.

Book excerpt: “Chaiton's fearless and moving memoir is a precious gift to anyone who yearns for a better understanding of intergenerational trauma and the path to true liberation.” — JEANNE BEKER, author, fashion editor, and television personality A child of Holocaust survivors grapples with his parents’ untold stories and their profound effect on the course of his extraordinary life. Growing up in Toronto, Sam Chaiton and his brothers knew their parents had been prisoners in Bergen-Belsen. But what their parents wouldn’t share about their history — including the fact they had also been in Auschwitz — ended up shaping their children’s lives. We Used to Dream of Freedom explores what a family is or could be; the psychology of survivors and the impact of survivor silence on their family; and the responsibility of second generations from traumatized communities to share knowledge from their own histories to help alleviate the suffering of others. Irreverent, moving, and tragic, often all at once, at its heart it is a story of a man who disappeared on his family, his quest to understand why he had to leave, and the long-overdue discovery about his parents that brought him back.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The iconic radio personality looks back on his life and career, from his first job at a smalltown Indiana station to his time at NPR and Sirius XM Radio. The host of The Bob Edwards Show and Bob Edwards Weekend on Sirius XM Radio, Bob Edwards became the first radio personality with a large national audience to take his chances in the new field of satellite radio. The programs’ mix of long-form interviews and news documentaries has won many prestigious awards. For thirty years, Louisville native Edwards was the voice of National Public Radio’s daily newsmagazine programs, co-hosting All Things Considered before launching Morning Edition in 1979. These programs built NPR’s national audience while also bringing Edwards to national prominence. In 2004, however, NPR announced that it would be finding a replacement for Edwards, inciting protests from tens of thousands of his fans and controversy among his listeners and fellow broadcasters. Today, Edwards continues to inform the American public with a voice known for its sincerity, intelligence, and wit. In A Voice in the Box: My Life in Radio, Edwards recounts his career as one of the most important figures in modern broadcasting. He describes his road to success on the radio waves, from his early days knocking on station doors during college and working for American Forces Korea Network to his work at NPR and induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2004. Edwards tells the story of his exit from NPR and the launch of his new radio ventures on the XM Satellite Radio network. Throughout the book, his sharp observations about the people he interviewed and covered and the colleagues with whom he worked offer a window on forty years of American news and on the evolution of public journalism. A Voice in the Box is an insider’s account of the world of American media and a fascinating, personal narrative from one of the most iconic personalities in radio history. Praise for A Voice in the Box “Edwards knows how to tell a story . . . . On the whole, there is much to learn and enjoy. Edwards shares fascinating details about beginning a career at a tiny station; becoming part of the energetic, excited startup team at NPR; conducting interviews and producing shows; and building a career as a beloved host. He’s forthright about his disappointments, too, including a divorce and the shock of being fired . . . . [A] solidly entertaining book.” —Publishers Weekly “At last, Bob Edwards has told his story. With all the wit, candor, and courage that made his journalism on NPR a favorite of millions across the country and a role model for all of us in public media. This “voice in the box” is good news.” —Bill Moyers “A Voice in the Box is a delight. Bob Edwards has told his story from inside the world of radio that has something for everybody?from the kid’s dream to be on radio to settling some adult’s scores with NPR and being happy now on Sirius XM Radio with many more hours on the radio still to come.” —Jim Lehrer
