Download or read book The Northern Farm written by Henry Beston and published by Holt Paperbacks. This book was released on 2013-05-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of his well-loved The Outermost House, Henry Beston's Northern Farm captures "the elusive magic of a year on a Kennebee farm...in truly beautiful prose" (Kirkus Reviews). Among the blue-white shadows and graceful curves of freshly fallen snow, the first rains of spring, and the quiet green of an early summer morning, Beston brings the reader into an inescapable alliance with the natural world. He translates the philosophy of the Maine farmer into terms as applicable in Manhattan as on the Kennebee. One of the great classics of American nature writing, Northern Farm is inspiring reading and ranks as one of Beston's most memorable and lyrical works. HENRY BESTON (1888-1968) was the author of many books, including The Outermost House, White Pine and Blue Water, and The St. Lawrence.

Book Synopsis The World of the Salt Marsh by : Charles Seabrook
Download or read book The World of the Salt Marsh written by Charles Seabrook and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World of the Salt Marsh is a wide-ranging exploration of the southeastern coast—its natural history, its people and their way of life, and the historic and ongoing threats to its ecological survival. Focusing on areas from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, to Cape Canaveral, Florida, Charles Seabrook examines the ecological importance of the salt marsh, calling it “a biological factory without equal.” Twice-daily tides carry in a supply of nutrients that nourish vast meadows of spartina (Spartina alterniflora)—a crucial habitat for creatures ranging from tiny marine invertebrates to wading birds. The meadows provide vital nurseries for 80 percent of the seafood species, including oysters, crabs, shrimp, and a variety of finfish, and they are invaluable for storm protection, erosion prevention, and pollution filtration. Seabrook is also concerned with the plight of the people who make their living from the coast’s bounty and who carry on its unique culture. Among them are Charlie Phillips, a fishmonger whose livelihood is threatened by development in McIntosh County, Georgia, and Vera Manigault of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, a basket maker of Gullah-Geechee descent, who says that the sweetgrass needed to make her culturally significant wares is becoming scarcer. For all of the biodiversity and cultural history of the salt marshes, many still view them as vast wastelands to be drained, diked, or “improved” for development into highways and subdivisions. If people can better understand and appreciate these ecosystems, Seabrook contends, they are more likely to join the growing chorus of scientists, conservationists, fishermen, and coastal visitors and residents calling for protection of these truly amazing places.

Book excerpt: "At low tide, the wind blowing across Spartina grass sounds like wind of the prairie. When the tide is in, the gentle music of moving water is added to the prairie rustle.... " One of nature's greatest gifts is the string of salt marshes that edges the East Coast from Newfoundland to Florida -- a ribbon of green growth, part solid land, part scurrying water. Life and Death of the Salt Marsh shows how these marshes are developed, what kinds of life inhabit them, how enormously they have contributed to man, and how ruthlessly man is destroying them.

Located just north of Toronto, this is some of the most profitable farmland in Canada. It is also a canary in a coal mine. From Dismal Swamp to Smiling Farms recounts the transformation, use, and protection of the Holland Marsh, demonstrating how liberal notions of progress and nature have shaped, and ultimately imperilled, this small agricultural preserve. This fascinating case study reveals the contradictions and deficiencies of contemporary farmland preservation paradigms, highlighting the challenges of forging a more socially just and ecologically rational food system.

This poignant memoir follows Teddy's story as he goes from playing pranks to working diligently, before he was a teenager, in both a grocery store and on an epic eight-mile paper route and doing the latter while enduring the harsh Canadian winters. He eventually saved enough money by age 9, to finance a trip for his father to visit Teddy's dying grandmother back in Holland, when his father was low on money, thus setting the stage for the kind of man he would become. His willingness to work hard, coupled with his desire for something greater led him on a journey that changed his life exponentially. The young man from good stock, whom Teddy has been able to trace back to the Pharaohs, and humble beginnings, grew to be a successful business leader and Chief Executive Officer. Follow the journey of growing up in the Canadian village of Holland Marsh.
