Book Synopsis From Kant to Croce by : Brian P. Copenhaver
Download or read book From Kant to Croce written by Brian P. Copenhaver and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From around 1800, shortly before Pasquale Galluppi's first book, until 1950, just before Benedetto Croce died, the most formative influences on Italian philosophers were Kant and the post-Kantians, especially Hegel. In many ways, the Italian philosophers of this period lived in turbulent but creative times, from the Restoration to the Risorgimento and the rise and fall of Fascism. From Kant to Croce is a comprehensive, highly readable history of the main currents and major figures of modern Italian philosophy, described in a substantial introduction that details the development of the discipline during this period. Brian P. Copenhaver and Rebecca Copenhaver provide the only up-to-date introduction in English to Italy's leading modern philosophers by translating and analysing rare and original texts and by chronicling the lives and times of the philosophers who wrote them. Thoroughly documented and highly readable, From Kant to Croce examines modern Italian philosophy from the perspective of contemporary analytic philosophy.

Download or read book The Philosophy of Benedetto Croce written by Herbert Wildon Carr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Benedetto Croce: The Problem of Art and History At the end of the volume I have given a list of Croce's principal works on Philosophy and of the English translations. I have not made use of the English translations in the present study. My references are to the original Italian, and where I have made quotations I am entirely responsible for the rendering. In no case are the passages in quotation marks literal translations; they are freely paraphrased. What I have endeavoured to do is to understand the philosophical meaning and express it in my own manner; so much so that in many cases the quotation marks are put for reference purposes only. English readers are deeply indebted to my friend, Mr. Douglas Ainslie, the translator of Croce's works, for his indefatigable zeal in spreading the fame of his author and obtaining recognition for the originality of his philosophy. On one important point of terminology I find that I differ not only from Mr. Ainslie but from others who have written on Croce's philosophy, and this is not mere caprice. They use the term spirit for what I call mind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Modernist Idealism by : Michael J. Subialka
Download or read book Modernist Idealism written by Michael J. Subialka and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a new approach to the intersection of literature and philosophy, Modernist Idealism contends that certain models of idealist thought require artistic form for their full development and that modernism realizes philosophical idealism in aesthetic form. This comparative view of modernism employs tools from intellectual history, literary analysis, and philosophical critique, focusing on the Italian reception of German idealist thought from the mid-1800s to the Second World War. Modernist Idealism intervenes in ongoing debates about the nineteenth- and twentieth-century resurgence of materialism and spiritualism, as well as the relation of decadent, avant-garde, and modernist production. Michael J. Subialka aims to open new discursive space for the philosophical study of modernist literary and visual culture, considering not only philosophical and literary texts but also early cinema. The author’s main contention is that, in various media and with sometimes radically different political and cultural aims, a host of modernist artists and thinkers can be seen as sharing in a project to realize idealist philosophical worldviews in aesthetic form.
