Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Jest to Earnest It is not agreeable' to be misrepresented, even though it be done with the best of motives, and it would seem but common justice that, when a public charge is made, as public a hearing in self-de fence should be given. And yet, I would not intrude this matter upon the public at all, if only personal considerations were involved. As it is, I have not replied through the press. I have not plucked the general. Public by the sleeve that it might listen, but I address those who, from reading my books, may be willing to give a thought to the writer and his views. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jest and Earnest, Vol. 1 of 2: A Collection of Essays and Reviews In the two sketches or squibs written in 1850 and 1851, after the manner of Herodotus, mirth was made of some statesmen for whom the writer has always felt great respect. This too must be forgiven, if any one should feel hurt after so long time at such freedom of speech; on the principle that where no harm is meant, no offence should be taken, and that, in politics at least, it is only possible to raise a hearty laugh against a very great man. Humour and pathos smee Homer's time have generally gone hand-ih-hand, though the pathos may have been sometimes, as in Dickens's case, quite uneven and unequal to the humour, and overdone. In Lewis Carroll, however, though the humour is everywhere, the chief pathos lies in the circumstances of the author's mind and not in his work. It seems rather pathetic, I mean, that this delicate humorist who added so much to the gaiety Of the nation, himself tired over-soon of humour, and lost prematurely his gaiety, and became a rather striking example of the ancient doctrine illustrated by Virgil and Wordsworth and other great masters of literature, that the literary man is rarely a good critic of himself and is rarely conscious him self when he is making literature and when he is murdering it. But wide as they are, there are three which are still wider - "The English Language." No dictionary can contain the English language; the most that the best can do is to attempt to exhibit a fair sample of the golden grain garnered in the storehouse of English speech. The English language - what a stately tree upheld by many roots! In that one tongue how many have merged their utterance. All the known races that have held this soil of Britain have left their mark behind them. First came the Britons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hundred Merry Tales: The Earliest English Jest-Book Here may be some, who will attach value and interest to the singular old volume, now first reproduced in exact imitation of the original, on account of the casual mention of it by Shakespear in one of his plays; but I hope and think that many more will welcome its appearance on another and higher ground, and will become of opinion that, where a solitary copy of such a relic as the earliest est-book in the national tongue of England is only to be found in a foreign repository, and is liable to destruction at any moment, the survival, not of its mere substance alone, but of its very identity, in the shape of a facsimile, is one of those minor duties, which we owe to sue ceeding generations. In the good former days, a gentleman who did his friends and the public the favour of reprinting a curious old book, was re garded as a sort of benefactor by a few who knew a little about the matter, and by the greater number, who knew nothing, he was considered a person of elegant tastes and of liberal disposi tion for he usually engaged in the speculation on his own responsibility. The case is now altogether altered, and any one who proposes to give to the world a new edition of an old book or tract, is in peril of being received as a Frenchman receives the news of his third child, unless he can make out a pretty strong plea for his proceeding. He must bring his justification in his hand. The burden of proof is upon him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Comic Almanack: An Ephemeris in Jest and Earnest, Containing Merry Tales, Humorous Poetry, Quips, and Oddities The introduction of Mr. Hallah's system of Singing for the Million we do not recommend. It increases the appetite by exercising the lungs; and it has been ascertained that if thirty children are taken, of whom fifteen have just sung God Save the Queen, and fifteen have not, the fifteen who have sung God Save the Queen will eat one sixteenth more than the fifteen others. This was tried with a round of beef and some boys belonging to the Model School at Battersea. The beef, when divided by those who had not been singing, went once' into fifteen and something over; but the boys who had been singing went twice into the beef, and left the remainder nothing. The Almanack was published at 28. 6d., but in 1848 - 9 the size was reduced and the price altered to 13. The change did not produce the increased circulation expected, and in 1850 it was again enlarged and published at 28. 6d. In this year some very spiritedly designed folding plates were added, and this feature continued until 1853, when Mr. Tilt's partner, the late Mr. Bogue, thought proper to discontinue the work.
