Book Synopsis Getting the message through: A Branch History of the U.S. Army Signal Corps by : Rebecca Robbins Raines
Download or read book Getting the message through: A Branch History of the U.S. Army Signal Corps written by Rebecca Robbins Raines and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1996 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.

Book Synopsis The Bishop's Boys: A Life of Wilbur and Orville Wright by : Tom D. Crouch
Download or read book The Bishop's Boys: A Life of Wilbur and Orville Wright written by Tom D. Crouch and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2003-04-17 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reissue of this definitive biography heralds the one-hundredth anniversary of the Wright brothers' first flight. Brilliant, self-trained engineers, the Wright brothers had a unique blend of native talent, character, and family experience that perfectly suited them to the task of invention but left them ill-prepared to face a world of skeptics, rivals, and officials. Using a treasure trove of Wright family correspondence and diaries, Tom Crouch skillfully weaves the story of the airplane's invention into the drama of a unique and unforgettable family. He shows us exactly how and why these two obscure bachelors from Dayton, Ohio, were able to succeed where so many better-trained, better-financed rivals had failed.

Download or read book A Wasp Among Eagles written by Ann Carl and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2013-06-04 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before World War II most Americans did not believe that the average woman could fly professionally, but during the war more than a thousand women pilots proved them wrong. These were the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs), who served as military flyers on the home front. In March 1944 one of them, Ann Baumgartner, was assigned to the Fighter Flight Test Branch at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio. There she would make history as the only woman to test-fly experimental planes during the war and the first woman to fly a jet. A WASP among Eagles is the first-person story of how Baumgartner learned to fly, trained as a WASP, and became one of the earliest jet-age pioneers. Flying such planes as the Curtiss A-25 Helldiver, the Lockheed P-38, and the B-29 Superfortress, she was the first woman to participate in a host of experiments, including in-air refueling and flying the first fighter equipped with a pressurized cockpit. But in evaluating the long-awaited turbojet-powered Bell YP-59A, she set a “first” record that would remain unchallenged for ten years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BOOK JACKET SUMMARY While working at several companies, Mr. Sawzin presented training on Quality Management, Statistical Process Control, Computer Aided Design, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, Problem Solving and Decision Making, and New Engineer Employee Orientation. The training included the presentation of works by Deming, Moen, Crosby, Kepner-Tregoe, ANSI Y14.5 and others. During this time Mr. Sawzin observed that not one quality technique can stand alone. Process Improvement requires the use of all these techniques. This book presents how to use these techniques coordinated together to improve a process. Mr. Sawzin has spent a life working career on applying training and quality research in real life applications and work environments. During this time Mr. Sawzin has proven the intent of these techniques and theories in real work applications while working with factory and office workers, and as a trainer, Standards Engineer, New Product Engineer, Design Draftsman, and Tool Designer. Mr. Sawzin shows these applications within this book. SAWZIN PRESENTATIONS & PUBLICATIONS "Developing a Computer Graphics Training Program" IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications. November 1983. Book Synopsis Hap Arnold and the Evolution of American Airpower by : Dik Daso
Download or read book Hap Arnold and the Evolution of American Airpower written by Dik Daso and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taught to fly by the Wright Brothers, appointed the first and only five-star general of the Air Force, and remembered as the man who won World War II’s air war, Henry Harley “Hap” Arnold is one of the most significant figures in American aviation history. Despite his legacy as an air pioneer, little has been written about him. In the thoroughly detailed Hap Arnold and the Evolution of American Airpower, reprinted to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United States Air Force, biographer and former military officer Dik Alan Daso draws on primary sources like Arnold’s personal papers and formerly declassified military documents to sketch out his incredible life and career. Daso describes important technology, institutions, and individuals who influenced Arnold’s decisions as a general, and reveals how the peacetime experiences of World War II’s foremost military airman shaped the evolution of American military aviation. This biography captures the adventurous career, dynamic personality, and bold vision of the “father of the Air Force.”

Gray, whose marriage resulted in an extraordinary husband and wife exhibition team; and Howard Max Rinehart, aerial mercenary, international racing competitor, Wright test pilot, South American explorer, and co-owner of one of America's premier charter services.
