Book excerpt: This book depicts how Freud’s cocaine and Benjamin’s hashish illustrate two critiques of modernity and two messianic emancipations through the pleasures of intoxicating discourse. Freud discovered the “libido” and “unconscious” in the industrial mimetic scheme of cocaine, whereas Benjamin found an inspiration for his critique of phantasmagoria and its variant psychoanalysis in hashish’s mimesis. In addition, as part of the history of colonialism, both drugs generated two distinct colonial discourses and, consequently, two different understandings of the emancipatory powers of pleasure, the unconscious, and dreams. After all, great ideas don't liberate; they intoxicate.

Book excerpt: The long-awaited Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud (RSE) is founded on the canonical Standard Edition (SE) translation from the German by James Strachey, while adding a new layer of revisions and translations. Conceptual and lexicographic ambiguities are clarified inextensive new annotations. Drawing on established conventions and intellectual traditions, the Revised Standard Edition supplements Freud’s writing with substantial editorial commentaries addressing controversial technical terms and translation issues through the lens of modern scholarship—a living text in dialogue with itself and the reader. The RSE also includes 56 essays and letters which were not included in the SE. In the RSE text and footnotes a subtle underlining distinguishes, in an easy and accessible way, Mark Solms’s revisions and additions, from the historical translation and commentaries of James Strachey’s Standard Edition. Readers can examine what Strachey contributed before the revisions in tandem with Solms’s updates, new translations, annotations, and commentaries, collectively bringing Freud’s text and Strachey’s translation into dialogue with five decades of research, including the most recent developments in the field. Commissioned by the British Psychoanalytical Society and co-published by Rowman & Littlefield, the Revised Standard Edition brings together decades of scholarly deliberation concerning the translation of Freudian technical terms while retaining the best of Strachey’s original English translation. This landmark work will captivate a wide audience, from interested lay readers to practicing clinicians to scientists and scholars in fields related to psychoanalysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few diseases have exercised the Western imagination as chronically as hysteria--from the wandering womb of ancient Greek medicine, to the demonically possessed witch of the Renaissance; from the "vaporous" salong women of Enlightenment Paris, through to the celebrated patients of Sigmund Freud, with their extravagant, erotically charged symptoms. In this fascnating and authoritative book, Mark Micale surveys the range of past and present readings of hysteria by intellectual historians; historians of science and medicine; scholars in gender studies, art history, and literature; and psychoanalysts, psychiatriasts, clinical psychologists, and neurologists. In so doing, he explores numerous questions raised by this evergrowing body of literature: Why, in recent years, has the history of hysterical disorders carried such resonance for commentators in the sciences and humanities? What can we learn form the textual traditions of hysteria about writing the history of disease in general? What is the broader cultural meaning of the new hysteria studies? In the second half of the book, Micale discusses the many historical "cultures of hysteria." He reconstructs in detail the past usages of the hysteria concept as a powerful, descriptive trope in various nonmedical domains, including poetry, fiction, theater, social thought, political criticism, and the arts His book is a pioneering attempt to write the historical phenomenology of disease in an age preoccupied with health, and a prescriptive remedy for writing histories of disease in the future. Mark S. Micale is Assistant Professor of History at Yale. He is the editor of Beyond the Unconscious: Essays of Henri F. Ellenberger (Princeton). Originally published in 1994. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s, the preeminence of psychoanalysis in the treatment of mental illness gave way to a number of other approaches. Yet, rather than practicing in cooperation, the different schools--existentialism, psychoanalysis, interpersonalism, behaviorism--each taught its own methods, convinced it was the true psychiatry. As a result, all too frequently, varieties of psychiatry have come and gone, wallowing in a battle of sects rather than progressing toward knowledge. In Psychiatric Movements, Leston Havens posits that psychiatry must adopt a pluralistic stance, for only an inclusive psychiatry can bridge the traditional scientific quest of medicine with a humanistic interest in whole lives, inner states, and relationships with others. If for no other reason, from an ethical standpoint, the patient should get the treatment he needs, not the one treatment the doctor dispenses. This edition includes a new introduction explaining changes in the field during the last thirty years. "This is an excellent book, profound, scholarly, thoughtful, and thought provoking."--Chase P. Kimball, Contemporary Psychology "This book is an intellectual delight, and should be a must' for psychiatry residents."--Israel Zwerling, International Journal of Group Psychotherapy "Students of clinical psychiatry...and practitioners will profit immensely from this book... Teachers of psychiatry should read it to enrich their understanding of what they teach and how it relates to the broader world of psychiatry."--Robert Michels, Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases "[This] is one of the most eloquent monographs of which I am aware concerning pluralism in modern American psychiatry."--Michael H. Ebert, Psychiatry Resident Leston Havens is professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Cambridge Hospital. He is the author of several books, including A Safe Place: Laying the Groundwork of Psychotherapy and Making Contact: Uses of Language in Psychotherapy. S. Nassir Ghaemi is assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and director of the Bipolar Disorder Research Program at Cambridge Hospital. He is the author or editor of several books, including Mood Disorders and The Concepts of Psychiatry.

Book excerpt: Clinical Manual of Addiction Psychopharmacology is a comprehensive guide to the pharmacology of drugs of abuse and the medications used to treat dependence on those substances. This new, second edition provides a thorough update on a broad range of addictive substances, along with enhanced coverage in areas where significant advances have been made since publication of the first edition. Clinicians, including psychiatrists, psychiatric residents and fellows, and other mental health practitioners who encounter individuals with substance-related disorders in the course of their clinical work, will find the manual to be well-organized, exhaustively referenced, and current. The book is structured for ease of use and completeness of coverage, with an abundance of beneficial features: Material is presented in a systematic fashion, addressing epidemiology, pharmacology of the abused substance (including pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics), psychopharmacological treatments, and issues of dependence, tolerance, withdrawal, and abstinence. Both basic science and clinical dimensions are addressed, and these different perspectives, including pharmacotherapy and the psychosocial aspects of treatment, are integrated to allow clinicians a more holistic and effective treatment approach. Coverage of the pharmacology of drugs of abuse is thorough and reflects the latest research findings, providing a necessary background for understanding the clinical effects and treatment of dependence on these substances. Coverage of pharmacotherapy for dependence on these drugs is equally comprehensive, with meticulously detailed findings and evidence-based recommendations for the clinical care of patients dependent on a variety of substances. Tables are used strategically to present complex information in a logical and accessible way; for example, the table on management of alcohol withdrawal syndrome includes detailed information on the symptom-triggered approach, fixed dose schedules, and delirium in a condensed, yet easy-to-understand format. The book is well written and edited for clarity and accuracy by editors and contributors at the forefront of the psychopharmacology of addiction. As new drugs come into the market and old drugs find new applications, clinicians must stay current to provide the best care. Clinical Manual of Addiction Psychopharmacology helps them to do just that, offering both sound science and clinical wisdom to meet the complex challenges of treating individuals with substance-related disorders.

Book excerpt: This multidisciplinary volume includes an international roster of contributors who explore how mass hysteria has emerged among people across the globe as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The contributors provide international perspectives on the effects of this “corohysteria” in areas such as education, healthcare, religion, psychology, mathematics, economics, media, racism, politics, etc. They argue the hysteria, angst, fear, unrest, and difficulties associated with the pandemic are exploited to foster political and social agendas and have led to the undermining of national and global responses to the virus.

Book excerpt: Beginning with the spectacle of hysteria, moving through the perversions of fetishism, masochism, and sadism, and ending with paranoia and psychosis, this book explores the ways that conflicts with the Oedipal law erupt on the body and in language in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, for Chaucer’s tales are rife with issues of mastery and control that emerge as conflicts not only between authority and experience but also between power and knowledge, word and flesh, rule books and reason, man and woman, same and other – conflicts that erupt in a macabre sprawl of broken bones, dismembered bodies, cut throats, and decapitations. Like the macabre sprawl of conflict in the Canterbury Tales, this book brings together a number of conflicting modes of thinking and writing through the surprising and perhaps disconcerting use of “shadow” chapters that speak to or against the four “central” chapters, creating both dialogue and interruption.

Book excerpt: A riveting exploration of the link between women's hormones and mental health--with advice, personal testimony, facts, and research creating a portrait of how hormones contribute to make up the "female animal" Hysterical seeks to explore the connections between hormones and health, particularly in the frequent mood changes and mental health issues women typically chalk up to the influence of hormones. Journalist Eleanor Morgan investigates the relationship between biochemistry, our bodies, and our mental health, including the context for this discussion: the historic culture of silence around women's bodies. As Morgan argues, we've gotten better at talking about mental health, but we still shy away from discussing periods, miscarriage, endometriosis, and menopause. That results in a lack of vital understanding for women, particularly as those processes are inextricably connected to our mental health; by exploring women's bodies in conjunction with our minds, Morgan urges for new thinking about our health. Examining the mythology of female hormones, the ways that culture shapes our perceptions of women's bodies, and the latest medical research, Hysterical skillfully paints a portrait of the modern landscape of women and health--and shows us how to navigate stigma and misinformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most organizational turnaround initiatives either end prematurely or wither away quickly after few initial successes. In Organizational Turnarounds with a Human Touch, author Baldev Seekri states that the issue is not the talent or sincerity of the orchestrating leaders, but rather the ignorance about the sequential nature of the transformation process and the lack of discipline to thwart leapfrogging tendencies. Based upon real turnaround successes spanning many countries and cultures, Seekri synthesizes practical results into principles and strategies that are universally applicable. He challenges and inspires organizations and individuals to accept and turn their situations around for positive outcomes. Organizational Turnarounds with a Human Touch provides a refreshing perspective by restoring the basics, redirecting the emphasis, propagating layman psychology, encouraging sequential learning, and savoring the aesthetics. At the heart of the turnaround process is the power of three elements of a simple mindset: simplicity first, complexity last; leadershipa basic human ability; and the theory that there is always a human solution. These elements can help propel struggling organizations and individuals from the deep sea of self-pity to soaring skies of possibilities.

Book excerpt: An examination of some of the canonical works of modern literature in English and German with regard to masculinity, relations between men, national identity and patriarchy. These were major preoccupations of male writers as they came to terms with or reacted against the decline of patriarchal authority. The book identifies five leitmotifs which serve to characterize the period between 1880 and 1930: the "double", the "other" (narcissus and Salome), the nationalization of Narcissus, Kampf or male bondage, and after patriarchy. Again and again one sees how men attempted to define themselves against what they imagined as "femininity", not merely outside but also within their selves, and further how men sought to overcome or find a socially acceptable expression for their narcissistic, homosexual and even sadomasochist libido.
