This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twentieth century, the political Zionist movement and Egyptian rulers completely uprooted the country's thriving Jewish community - a goal the Pharaohs tried to realize as early as 3500 years ago. Mostly comprised of descendants of Sephardim from the Iberian Peninsula, the world's oldest Jewish community totaled 85,000 members in 1948. No more than 100 to 200 Jews live in Egypt today. This book tells the story of Egypt's Jewish history from Biblical times to 1967, the year of one of the last major Jewish emigration waves from Egypt. It highlights the First Exodus in ca. 1500 BCE and the Second Exodus, which was triggered by the foundation of the State of Israel and three successive wars in 1948, 1956, and 1967. Throughout the narrative, it becomes evident that the Jewish community consistently was subject to the arbitrary will of Egyptian rulers. Starting in 1948, members of this community were forced to leave the country without any of their belongings on short notice. Like other Jews from the Arab world, Egyptian Jews were not Zionists in the Eurocentric, Ashkenazi sense. Their arrival in Israel was met with prejudice and disdain. Even though they were discriminated against in matters of housing and education, they still managed to integrate well into Israeli society and are now members of the country's upper and middle class. The evidence presented in this book is based on interviews with ninety-six Egyptian Jews in Israel and the United States.

It concerns the subject of the European Union's relations with Egypt after 2011 (including the earlier period), which is a highly topical issue and a very difficult one to analyse and explain. It is the outcome of a research grant titled 'The European Union towards the Transformation Processes in Egypt after 2011.' The authors largely belong to a small group of experts on North Africa and the Middle East, including Egypt. They are familiar with the literature on the subject from around the world and EU legislation. A significant strength of this project concerns the fieldwork carried out on site, in Egypt (literature, documents, interviews and observation), as well as direct contacts with European Union officials."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the process of globalisation relate to the increase of migratory flows from less developed countries to western ones? This book explores the impact of globalisation upon migration from an international political economy perspective, paying particular attention to the dynamics of migration from the Middle East and North Africa area, especially Egypt, to the EU member countries. The theoretical aims of the book are to understand the problem of migration, both legal and illegal, in the context of globalisation, and to assess the relation between globalisation, marginalisation and the EU response to threats of mass immigration from less developed countries.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Various Countries of Europe, Asia, and Africa, Vol. 2: Greece, Egypt, and the Holy Land, Section 1 Sn the author published the first Volume of these Travels, he proposed to divide the work into three per tions. The observations made in Greece, Syria, and Egypt, were reserved for the second part; whether cona sisting of One volume, or of more than one. This plan is still pursued; but from the very per lexed state of the geography of the country alluded to the word Syria the less exes tionable appellation of itiwsttns was not stituted, in he second e ltion for that of Syria. The same perplexity has again induced the author to alter what he had thus written, and to consider the present pub licetion ss contalnln observations made in Greece, Egflt, and the Holy and. To several names of Saris, Palestine, theholy Land, the Land of Canaan, the act of Judas, and the Land of Promise, have been used indiscriminately with reference to a particular territory, or separate]! Applied to difl'erent parts of it. Neither ancient nor mo ern geographers are agreed as to the precise limits intendedby either of these a pellations. According to some authors, Syria, Phos n co, and Palestine. Were three distinct regions. Others include, within the Syrian frontier, not only Phoenice and Palmstine, but also Mesopotamia. Strabo describes Syria 'as comprehending all the country from Mount Amanus and the river Euphrates to Arabia and to Egypt.(a) The word Palaestine occurs only once, incidentally, in all his writings.( b) Yet the name was in use above four.
