Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of Human Bondage (1915) is a novel by W. Somerset Maugham. Inspired by his experiences as an orphan and young student, Maugham composed his masterpiece. Adapted several times for film, Of Human Bondage is a story of tragedy, perseverance, and the eternal search for happiness which drives us as much as it haunts our every move. Orphaned as a boy, Philip Carey is raised in an affectionless household by his aunt and uncle. Although his Aunt Louisa tries to make him feel welcome, William proves an uncaring, vindictive man. Left to fend for himself most days, Philip finds solace in the family’s substantial collection of books, which serve as an escape for the imaginative boy. Sent to study at a prestigious boarding school, Philip struggles to fit in with his peers, who abuse him for his intelligence and club foot. Despite his struggles, he perseveres in his studies and chooses his own path in life, moving to Heidelberg, Germany and denying his uncle’s wish that he attend Oxford. As he struggles to become a professional artist, Philip learns that one’s dreams are often unsubstantiated in the world of the living. Of Human Bondage is a tale of desire, disappointment, and romance by a master stylist with a keen sense of the complications inherent to human nature. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of W. Somerset Maugham’s Of Human Bondage is a classic work of British literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: The Evolution of Human Pair-Bonding, Friendship, and Sexual Attraction presents an evolutionary history of romantic love, male-female pair-bonding, same-sex friendship, and sexual attraction, drawing on sexuality research, gay and lesbian studies, history, literature, anthropology, and evolutionary science. Employing evolutionary theory as a framework, close same-sex friendship is examined as an adaptive trait that has harnessed love, affection, and sexual pleasure to navigate same-sex environments for both men and women, ultimately benefiting their reproductive success and promoting the inheritance of traits for friendship. Chapters consider the desire to form close same-sex friendships and ask if this is embedded in our biology, concluding that most humans have the capacity to form loving, meaningful, and sexual relationships with men and women. This book takes on a unique interdisciplinary approach and is essential reading for those studying and working in sexuality research, anthropology, sociology, evolutionary psychology, and gay and lesbian studies. It will also be of interest to marriage and family therapists as well as sex therapists.

Book excerpt: Between Freedom and Bondage looks at the fluctuations of black suffrage in the ante-bellum North, using the four states of New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Rhode Island as examples. In each of these states, a different outcome was obtained for blacks in their quest to share the vote. By analyzing the various outcomes of state struggles, Malone offers a framework for understanding and explaining how the issue of voting rights for blacks unfolded between the drafting of the Constitution, and the end of the Civil War.

It examines the ways in which the metaphor is rooted in gender assumptions of the ancient world and the inherent tension in the usage of the marriage metaphor in ancient Israel, as well as in today's church and society."--BOOK JACKET

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotion “One can make any emotion into a creative force in one’s life.” – Sadhguru It’s not just poetic license that allows us to refer to emotions as “juicy”. In a literal sense also, emotions are a chemical cocktail that course through our bodies. But while we have no problems with pleasant emotions, unpleasant emotions are the source of much angst in our lives. In Emotion: The Juice of Life, Sadhguru looks at the gamut of human emotions and how to turn them into stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. Relationships “If you enhance yourself into a very beautiful state, everyone will want to hold a relationship with you.” – Sadhguru Human beings constantly make and break relationships. Unfortunately, relationships can make and break human beings too. Why are relationships such a circus for most of us? What is this primal urge within us that demands a bond – physical, mental, or emotional – with another? And how do we keep this bond from turning into bondage? These are the fundamental questions that Relationships: Bond or Bondage looks at as Sadhguru shares with us the keys to forming lasting and joyful relationships, whether they are with husband or wife, family and friends, at work, or with the very existence itself. Sadhguru is a yogi and profound mystic of our times. An absolute clarity of perception places him in a unique space in not only matters spiritual but in business, environmental and international affairs, and opens a new door on all that he touches.

Book excerpt: Pia Mellody creates a framework for identifying codependent thinking, emotions and behaviour and provides an effective approach to recovery. Mellody sets forth five primary adult symptoms of this crippling condition, then traces their origin to emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical and sexual abuses that occur in childhood. Central to Mellody's approach is the concept that the codependent adult's injured inner child needs healing. Recovery from codependence, therefore, involves clearing up the toxic emotions left over from these painful childhood experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 2005 the Lord purpose in my heart to learn more about His word. Having a thirsty for knowledge the Spirit led me to Virginia Baptist College (seminary school). Been obedient to the Spirit of God He blessed me to receive my Master degree in Ministry (Theology) May of 2008. It was during my training there I was lead to write this book Marriage, Seeing it Gods way. Many times I prayed asking God to show me how to be a good husband according to his word. While writing this book the Lord helped me achieve the desires of my heart by becoming a loving husband. After so many years of doing things wrong in the marriage I had a yearning to do it Gods way and fulfilled my purpose as a husband. My soul purpose was to please God and my wife (help mate) of 30 years. The Lord revealed many things to me one particular characteristic about me He showed me stood out more than all others. Love her as Christ loved me with longsuffer and forgive. Out of the process of time through many hours of seeking the Lord in pray, fasting and studying the Scriptures, the Lord opens up my mind to put these thought in the form of a book. I am thankful for the fellowship He allow me to share with Him, the many conversations we had, the tears I shed and the long hours of research. Two things I learned about God during this process, (1) He will meet you where you are, (2) He will always tell you what you dont want to here. Be careful what you ask for. Writing this book also allowed me to achieve many other goals; To come a certify Sunday school teacher ETA (Standard & Advance courses), Ordained Elder PCAF, Inc., Aug. 2011 and a graduate of ESSC Ministerial Training Course and a new career. I truly thank my wife for her patient and love she was the motor that kept me going but God was the source. I pray this book be a blessing to all who reads it. God bless.
