My mothers were industrious women, and our family had always good crops; and I will tell now how the women of my father's family cared for their fields, as I saw them, and helped them. --Buffalo Bird Woman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a set of new and innovative essays on landscape and garden culture in precolonial India, with a special focus on the Deccan. Most research to date has concentrated on the comparatively well preserved gardens and built landscapes of the celebrated Mughal empire, giving the impression that they have been lacking in other times and regions. Not only does this volume provide a corrective to such assumptions, it also moves away from traditional art-historical approaches by posing new questions and exploring hitherto neglected source materials. The contributors understand gardens in two related ways: first as real or imagined spaces and manipulated landscapes that are often invested with pronounced semiotic density; and second as congeries of institutions and practices with far-reaching social ramifications for the constitution of elite societies. The essays here present a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of garden culture in precolonial India, and together suggest several new and exciting directions of enquiry for those working in the Deccan, Mughal India, and beyond.

Book excerpt: Danielle Porret’s passion for Asian art and for Indian painting in particular was inflamed when she attended classes on Asian mythology during her studies at Geneva University. It intensified further when in 1966 she visited an exhibition in London of Indian paintings collected by Mildred and William Archer, curators of Indian art at the British India office and the Victoria & Albert Museum respectively. A conference interpreter by profession, Porret began to study the collections of Asian art at London’s great museums and the technique of paper restoration. And she started to buy Indian paintings herself. Danielle Porret’s collection comprises outstanding works spanning seven centuries from the time of the Sultans (1206–1526) through to the nineteenth century. While many museums house representative art-historical inventories, Porret describes her collection as a “secret garden” compiled on the basis of her own personal taste. The new book A Secret Garden features 105 paintings from Porret’s collection. The essays are contributed by leading experts in the area of Indian painting: B.N. Goswamy (Pahari painting), Jeremiah P. Losty (the painting of Rajasthan and central India), and John Seyller (Mogul- und Dekkan painting, as well as the painting from the time of the Sultans). The book is published to coincide with an exhibition at the Museum Rietberg in Zürich in spring 2014.

Book excerpt: India's complex and fascinating history is reflected in the story of its gardens – and those who built them, enjoyed them, painted and wrote about them. From the first references to gardens in the ancient Hindu texts of the Ramayana and the Kama Sutra to the palace gardens of Rajasthan and Udaipur, this book takes us on a compelling visual and cultural journey. 'Gardens of Delight' examines historical and traditional gardens, gardens in literature and art, sacred and palace gardens, and the concept of the garden in modern India, providing a complete view of how a people’s relationship with their land has changed over time. The influence of the Indian garden worldwide as well as the assimilation of external influences is also key to this rich and intriguing story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a multi-faceted study of the role of gardening in British India with several accompanying illustrations- it is a study of imperial history, environmental history, cultural history and women's history. First, as a study in imperial history that shows how the British used landscape architecture to convey images of power to both themselves and the Indians. Second, as a study in environmental history, this book traces the way in which the British established a whole series of Botanical gardens centered at Kew in London. Tea and cincinchona (an antidote for malaria) were imported to be grown in India, while opium was forcibly exported to China. Without cincinchona, imperialism would have been medically impossible and without tea or opium, imperialism would have not been immensely profitable. Third, this is a study in cultural history, exploring how the British tried to modify India by creating their own cultural retreat - the hill station. Finally, this book deals with women's history. Gardening became a means by which English women occupied themselves, creating a little England to alleviate the intense homesickness.
