Book excerpt: The formal launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) sets the global development agenda through 2030, placing significant emphasis on promoting social and environmental sustainability alongside economic growth and poverty reduction. Meeting the SDGs will require actions across a wide range of areas by both national governments and the international community. This paper examines the types of policies that developing countries will need to implement to foster economic transformation, to promote economic and social inclusion, and to meet key environmental objectives. Reducing inequality, achieving gender equity, and pricing energy and water resources appropriately receive particular attention.

Based on their research with senior executives across a variety of industries—and including firms like Marriott, Microsoft, SunTrust, UPS, and Vail Resorts—Kenneth J. Carrig and Scott A. Snell have distilled the elements that are most critical for execution. This book addresses the challenges of execution, why it matters, and why the approach remains elusive. It introduces an integrated framework for understanding four priorities underlying execution excellence. Ultimately, it all comes down to alignment, agility, ability, and architecture. The authors lay out a process for applying the framework, helping business leaders to diagnose their challenges and to determine their path toward breakthrough performance.

This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to explore the emergence of science fiction as a genre and its development into steampunk as a subgenre of science fiction in selected science fiction novels: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1823), Stanislaw Lem's Solaris (1970) and K. W. Jeter's Infernal Devices (1987). This research shows that the scientists in these novels drag themselves into darkness. Victor, the protagonists of Frankenstein, is an ambition scientist who wants to conquer death but tragically loses his family during this endeavor. Kelvin, the hero of Solaris, is psychologically devastated when he struggles to understand how Solaris ocean creates a simulation of people. The hero of the third novel, George Dewar's father, a mad scientist and inventor, creates a double of his own son as a robot tries to destroy the earth. The main argument of this research is that all these novels set in different eras draw on science fiction to criticize and question man's greedy and unrestricted desire for scientific discovery to the extent that they want to conquer the universe and play the role of God. The study will ask the following questions: How do the ambitious scientists in the novels drag themselves into madness? And how does the scientific desire turn into a crave for transcendence bringing about their damnation? What do these scientific explorations and inventions reveal about human nature? Does steampunk bring evolution to the future as a sub-genre of science fiction?

Book excerpt: The Second World War and the German Occupation remain a major focal point in French culture and society, with new and sometimes controversial titles published every year - Irène Némirovsky's Suite française and Jonathan Littell's Les Bienveillantes, both rapidly translated into English, offer just two examples of this significant phenomenon. Gathering within one volume studies of genres, visual cultures, chronology, narrative theory, and a wealth of narratives in fiction and film, Framing narratives of the Second World War and occupation in France 1939-2009 brings together an internationally distinguished group of contributors and offers an authoritative overview of criticism on war and occupation narratives in French, a redefinition of the canon of texts and films to be studied and a vibrant demonstration of the richness of the work in this area. Now available in paperback, the book includes contributions by William Cloonan, Richard J Golsan, Leah Hewitt, Colin Nettelbeck and Gisèle Sapiro

Leaders today recognize that they need to have the ability to craft strategy and that they require the skills to execute it. But almost all books, blogs, talks, articles and other material discuss “why” execution is important, not how to achieve excellence in execution. Excellence in Execution aims to start where almost all leave off. It takes the reader on the implementation journey and is in two parts. Part One addresses "Transforming the Approach." It focuses on changing the current thinking and attitude of leaders. Two thirds of strategy execution still fail and a different approach is required. A new language and terms are introduced such as, Strategy Cadence, Execution Juxtaposition, Decoding the Execution Challenge, Mavericks Network, Review Rhythm and the Three Themes Broad of Execution. Part Two is about "Making It Your Own" and explains how to do this by providing the required mindset, skillset and toolset. It explains in detail what is required to:

How you can create extraordinary and lasting breakthrough growth in top and bottom line performance, "simply" by changing the way you lead the company. From "burning platform" to "burning ambition" Most industries and companies have now adapted to the new world order of recession or the post-recession zero growth environment. This means that most companies no longer have to fight for their life on a day-to-day basis and the idea of using the "burning platform" is more or less gone. The recession was a great chance to rethink, redirect and reinvent the company. If you utilized that opportunity I guess that your company is close to being in the best shape ever. This means it is time to capitalize on the great additional potential in the marketplace and in the, company by creating a "burning ambition". The concept of the "burning platform" is pain driven. The situation is painful and you have got to run. "Where to" does not really matter. The alternative, the concept of "burning ambition", is pleasure driven it is about a particularly attractive situation or state that you want to realize a place you want to go. Most companies have a huge potential that can be liberated through breakthrough leadership. It is not unlikely that top and bottom-line performance can be grown by 25 to 50 per cent year-on-year via breakthrough leadership. It all starts with you believing in the additional potential. If you do this in the right way the upside is fantastic and the potential downside is close to non-existent. This is the optimal situation and starting point for your transformation. Join me on my breakthrough mission.

Book excerpt: This book is both an introductory overview of The Cantos and a detailed analysis advancing the knowledge of even the most sophisticated specialist. Sicari's analysis gives a clear orientation to the often bewildering but ultimately rewarding world of this difficult epic poem and shows that beneath the surface of the poem is the classical figure of the epic wanderer whose journey provides the "plot" of the poem. Non-specialists will appreciate Sicari's synthesis of a wide range of material. Sicari explores how Dante and the epic tradition informs The Cantos; those interested in the epic should find Sicari's study an important contribution to the field. Those studying modernism in general will see in Sicari's definition of the modern epic useful ways to study the other great achievements of high modernism, especially those of Yeats, Eliot, and Joyce. Those interested in the relation between literature and politics will find this book especially informative, for Sicari is one of the few critics on Pound who does not ignore Pound's politics, or simply castigate him for the unfortunate views he adopts and advocates. The analysis of Pound's fascism is a sub-theme that sheds new light on how politics enters a great modernist poem and affects its shape and intention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of how a man could become a Roman emperor, and the failure to create an enduring, consistent system for selecting the next emperor. John D. Grainger analyses the Roman imperial succession, demonstrating that the empire organized by Augustus was fundamentally flawed in the method it used to find emperors. Augustus’s system was a mixture of heredity, senatorial, and military influences, and these were generally antagonistic. Consequently, the Empire went through a series of crises, in which the succession to a previous, usually dead, emperor was the main issue. The infamous “Year of the Four Emperors,” AD 69, is only the most famous of these crises, which often involved bouts of bloody and destructive civil war, assassinations and purges. These were followed by a period, usually relatively short, in which the victor in the “crisis” established a new system, juggling the three basic elements identified by Augustus, but which was as fragile and short lived as its predecessor; these “consequences” of each crisis are discussed. The lucid and erudite text is supported by over 22 genealogical tables and 100 images illustrating the Emperors. Praise of The Roman Imperial Succession “For a general introduction to the question of how one becomes a Roman emperor, Grainger has provided a sound guide.” —Bryn Mawr Classical Review
