Book excerpt: Does it sometimes seem like your life is unreal? Perhaps it seems that your existence is more a nightmare than a dream. We never know about the private lives behind the façades people create for public consumption. Yet what shapes our lives is the raw, unvarnished, unstated, and camouflaged reality that defines our everyday existence. I grew up in such an illusion and suspected that my life was closer to the nightmare side than the dream. My dad was a recognized and renowned jazz musician. He played with and made records with the great musicians of the late twentieth century. Behind the mask of success and notoriety lurked a monster whom no one from the public would have recognized or believed existed. His own insecurity, fear, addictions, lies, and bad choices led him to be a violent abuser. Bars on the windows, secrets behind locked doors, terrors behind the mask of normalcy. I lived in a nightmare world and needed a way out. In the end, for me, there is a happy ending. What I didn't know was that, while I was able to escape the abusive situation, the abuse itself followed me. It sapped my joy and creativity. It wasn't until I fell into a hole of depression as a supposedly successful adult, a doctor, and the mother of three children that I realized there was a purpose to my pain. What did it take to crawl out of this hole? Join me as I take you on a journey of Reboot, Repair, Rebirth. Reboot your soul by breaking the silence, speaking your truth, and ending the isolation. Get to physical and emotional safety. Repair by getting help and consciously healing your mind, heart, and body. Conquer your demons and discover your inner light and resilience. Celebrate your Rebirth as a new, healing, wiser, loving, and centered being. Live intentionally and abundantly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of psychological terror brought on by the hands of my mother. I am the second oldest of 16 children and the stories I am about to describe relays what it was like to live under the terror and reign of our mother. The abuse started about 35 years ago in 1970 and who knew there would be 16 direct victims and many other people affected by her manipulations when all was said and done. Hind sight is truly 20/20 and I think if things were handled differently with the 1987 felony child abuse charges in Waukesha County, there wouldn't be this tale to tell today in 2005. There are two distinct time periods in this story: the 17 years prior to 1987 and the 18 years after 1987. You will find parallels in both sections that I still can't believe today andI was part of the situation from the beginning and a catalyst for this coming to light. What you will see is a very large break in the system but above all, the master manipulation that would rival the greatest minds. By manipulating her children, the social workers, the lawyers, the prosecutors, mom got off with nothing in 1987 when she was facing 18 counts of felony and misdemeanor child abuse charges, $180,000 in fines and 30 years in prison. Her ability to walk away from that without a scar only enabled her psychotic manipulating mind and that allowed mom to abuse again without fear for the next 18 years. It is heartbreaking to live with the fact that these actions have been addressed in the past and she ended up inflicting the same thing on my brothers and sisters as soon as the Department of Social Services stepped out of the situation in the late 80's.

Book excerpt: This story will engage, shock and make you laugh. It begins in an impoverished environment of abuse and violence. Years of drinking eventually result in a psychotic breakdown when I was sectioned in a psychiatric hospital. After escaping from this hospital I continued to make a complete mess of my life. At 34 I tried to stop drinking. Silly me! I ended up in a coma on my death bed with the delirium tremors (DTs) . This time I was sent to a rehabilitation unit where I was interned with alcoholics, drug addicts, criminals and murderers. They provided the love, support and encouragement I needed to start to build a new life. I went on to complete several degrees related to psychology, set up a successful business and travelled the world. The intentions of writing this book are not only to provide a compelling story but to impart with the psychological insights gleaned on my journey of recovery and give any reader who needs it hope and inspiration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning to live abundantly is the ability to see, feel, believe, and expect abundance and prosperity in all areas of life—financially, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Unfortunately what often holds us back from achieving abundance is what we believe deep inside about ourselves, our potentials, and our limitations. In her hands-on, step-by-step teaching manual, seasoned psychotherapist Roni Bissett shares practical tips and accompanying exercises that invite others to define their own meaning of abundance and create the lives they have always wanted to live. Bissett, a marriage and family counselor who has conducted numerous workshops on the art of living life abundantly, believes that if we lack abundance and prosperity in our lives, it is not because there is an absence of these things; instead, it is because we believe there is. While reinforcing the phrase “what we believe we create,” Bissett explains how you can realize a happier existence through a series of steps that encourage you to look inward and • change thought patterns from negative into positive; • use the tools of the conscious mind to achieve goals; • identify prosperity barriers and attitudes about money; and • alter thinking through visualization and meditation. Abundance Is Your Birthright is an innovative guidebook that shares valuable advice for anyone ready to bring his or her unique definition of abundance into reality and ultimately achieve true happiness.

On the surface, it seems unnecessary to instruct someone to be content in times of prosperity. However, times of prosperity and abundance provide some of the strongest temptations to pull our hearts away from God. Jeremiah Burroughs was keenly aware that the riches of this world compete for our affections and challenge our contentment in Christ. Originally prepared as an appendix to The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment , this book provides an important conclusion to Burroughs’s sermon series on Philippians 4:11–12: “I have learned in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. Table of Contents: 1. Introduction 2. What Learning to Be Full Means 3. The Difficulty of Learning to Be Full 4. The Necessity of Learning to Be Full 5. The Excellency of Learning to Be Full 6. The Mystery of Learning to Be Full 7. Lessons for Learning to Be Full 8. Increasing the Guilt of Sins of Abundance 9. Applications for Improving Prosperous Conditions 10. Concluding Words on Contentment Series Description Interest in the Puritans continues to grow, but many people find reading these giants of the faith a bit unnerving. This series seeks to overcome that barrier by presenting Puritan books that are convenient in size and unintimidating in length. Each book is carefully edited with modern readers in mind, smoothing out difficult language of a bygone era while retaining the meaning of the original authors. Books for the series are thoughtfully selected to provide some of the best counsel on important subjects that people continue to wrestle with today.

[Suzman chronicles] how much humankind can still learn from the disappearing way of life of the most marginalized communities on earth.” -Yuval Noah Harari, author of SAPIENS: A BRIEF HISTORY OF HUMAN KIND and HOMO DEUS: A BRIEF HISTORY OF TOMORROW WASHINGTON POST'S 50 NOTABLE WORKS OF NONFICTION IN 2017 AN NPR BEST BOOK OF 2017 A vibrant portrait of the “original affluent society”-the Bushmen of southern Africa-by the anthropologist who has spent much of the last twenty-five years documenting their encounter with modernity. If the success of a civilization is measured by its endurance over time, then the Bushmen of the Kalahari are by far the most successful in human history. A hunting and gathering people who made a good living by working only as much as needed to exist in harmony with their hostile desert environment, the Bushmen have lived in southern Africa since the evolution of our species nearly two hundred thousand years ago. In Affluence Without Abundance, anthropologist James Suzman vividly brings to life a proud and private people, introducing unforgettable members of their tribe, and telling the story of the collision between the modern global economy and the oldest hunting and gathering society on earth. In rendering an intimate picture of a people coping with radical change, it asks profound questions about how we now think about matters such as work, wealth, equality, contentment, and even time. Not since Elizabeth Marshall Thomas's The Harmless People in 1959 has anyone provided a more intimate or insightful account of the Bushmen or of what we might learn about ourselves from our shared history as hunter-gatherers.

Book excerpt: Meredith Maran lived a daughter's nightmare: she accused her father of sexual abuse, then realized, nearly too late, that he was innocent. During the 1980s and 1990s, tens of thousands of Americans became convinced that they had repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse, and then, decades later, recovered those memories in therapy. Journalist, mother, and daughter Meredith Maran was one of them. Her accusation and estrangement from her father caused her sons to grow up without their only grandfather, divided her family into those who believed her and those who didn't, and led her to isolate herself on "Planet Incest," where "survivors" devoted their lives, and life savings, to recovering memories of events that had never occurred. Maran unveils her family's devastation and ultimate redemption against the backdrop of the sex-abuse scandals, beginning with the infamous McMartin preschool trial, that sent hundreds of innocents to jail—several of whom remain imprisoned today. Exploring the psychological, cultural, and neuroscientific causes of this modern American witch-hunt, My Lie asks: how could so many people come to believe the same lie at the same time? What has neuroscience discovered about the brain's capacity to create false memories and encode false beliefs? What are the "big lies" gaining traction in American culture today—and how can we keep them from taking hold? My Lie is a wrenchingly honest, unexpectedly witty, and profoundly human story that proves the personal is indeed political—and the political can become painfully personal.
