Book excerpt: States are motivated to do what they can in the present to prepare for long-term threats to their survival. The possibility of facing an overwhelming threat encourages interstate cooperation in the present, but ensuring long-term commitment among states is non-trivial, especially when the cause for cooperation is distant and ill-defined. Despite the challenges posed by both anarchy and uncertainty, states have developed institutions to enhance long-term cooperation, process uncertainty and create a group of like-minded states ready and willing to come to their defense. Some of these security integration institutions, such as alliances, are well known. Others, such as joint military exercises and defense cooperation agreements, are less commonly analyzed. Two of the papers in this three paper dissertation identify understudied security institutions, weapons coproduction and overseas military basing, and present a mix of data sources and methods to show how states utilize these institutions to increase their security ties. The third paper in the dissertation presents a novel measure of security alignment that aggregates existing data on security cooperation and accurately captures security relationships in the international system. Taken together, the papers in this project increase our understanding of how states act in the present to create long-term security commitment among like-minded states.

Book excerpt: ....In the unending definement of this book I honestly believe that people will find out soon enough what will happen to them when the moment of life's ending comes along, but it is my duty as both a dying patient, and as a woman of religion, to tell others who may not know, and to explain the best of my ability the atrocities that actually occured in this place.... ....Unlike most of the general masses I can hear many other pulses of life, but this all comes from knowing God and the child within as she absorbs the building tensions and rechannels that energy into a rightful and God-fearing direction, hence creating a fullfilling existence regardless if that same individual is hurting or is at peace....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senator Robert F. "Bobby" Kennedy had just lost the 1968 presidential primary election in Oregon to Senator Eugene McCarthy when Elvin Bell, Fresno, California's Mayor Pro Tem, hosted him for a breakfast meeting. As an exhausted Kennedy approached the podium to speak, Bell watched in amazement as Kennedy transformed from a frail man into a powerful speaker. Moments later as Bell rose to his feet with other audience members in a rousing standing ovation, he had no idea that he would never see his friend Bobby again. Bobby was shot the next day in Los Angeles and died within hours. Bell, a retired public official and USAF colonel, shares a compelling compilation of anecdotes that highlight the iconic personalities he has known and worked with during his assignments in the White House and the Pentagon, as well as during official foreign travels and various activities throughout America. In addition to the everyday characters and scoundrels he has encountered in his lifetime, he features nearly eighty personalities that include Gregory Peck, John Wayne, John Lennon, Eleanor Roosevelt, General Alexander Haig, Frank Sinatra, and Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan. In this fascinating memoir, a former political figure takes a look back at the true-life characters he has encountered and how they made a difference in his life and the world.

Book excerpt: A dynamic and inspiring exploration of the new science that is redrawing the future for people in their forties, fifties, and sixties for the better—and for good. There’s no such thing as an inevitable midlife crisis, Barbara Bradley Hagerty writes in this provocative, hopeful book. It’s a myth, an illusion. New scientific research explodes the fable that midlife is a time when things start to go downhill for everybody. In fact, midlife can be a great new adventure, when you can embrace fresh possibilities, purposes, and pleasures. In Life Reimagined, Hagerty explains that midlife is about renewal: It’s the time to renegotiate your purpose, refocus your relationships, and transform the way you think about the world and yourself. Drawing from emerging information in neurology, psychology, biology, genetics, and sociology—as well as her own story of midlife transformation—Hagerty redraws the map for people in midlife and plots a new course forward in understanding our health, our relationships, even our futures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring hundreds of photos from the national archives, diagrams, and detailed specifications, Hunnicutt's Firepower remains the definitive developmental history of the heavy tank for the military historian, professional soldier, and tank restorer. This ambitious entry in R.P. Hunnicutt's 10-volume compendium of American tank history details the development of the heavy tanks from its initial conception in World War I to its final development in the 1960s. First developed after WWI, various iterations of the heavy armored military vehicle have served as a crucial component of American military operations in all manner of engagements. Hunnicutt spares no detail as he examines the origins and deployment of the Mark VIII and TI and M6 in the 1930s and 1940s. First conceived as a vehicle to be used for infantry support, by the end of WWI, the heavy tank had evolved into the modern concept with a powerful turret mounted antitank gun protected by heavy armor--a fighting machine in its own right. Hunnicutt provides detailed technical information about these vehicles and their role in the U.S. Army and Marines. The M103A product-improved descendant of the T43 tanks and its many variations is also treated with exacting detail by Hunnicutt, who takes us through the numerous and important variations on the heavy tank design. Spanning the history of America's most widely used main battle tank, Hunnicutt's Firepower is an absolute must-have for anyone interested in the history of the American military. Book excerpt: How military technology has transformed the world The history of warfare cannot be fully understood without considering the technology of killing. In Firepower, acclaimed historian Paul Lockhart tells the story of the evolution of weaponry and how it transformed not only the conduct of warfare but also the very structure of power in the West, from the Renaissance to the dawn of the atomic era. Across this period, improvements in firepower shaped the evolving art of war. For centuries, weaponry had remained simple enough that any state could equip a respectable army. That all changed around 1870, when the cost of investing in increasingly complicated technology soon meant that only a handful of great powers could afford to manufacture advanced weaponry, while other countries fell behind. Going beyond the battlefield, Firepower ultimately reveals how changes in weapons technology reshaped human history.

Letty Ellison left her small town and her high-school sweetheart behind to chase her dreams—but music never worked out. When she returns nine years later, nothing’s changed in Red Springs, Wyoming, except for her. Letty’s a little more humble, she’s a single mom to a beautiful daughter, and she has a secret: she needs surgery for a potentially fatal heart condition. On top of everything, seeing Chase Brown again makes her realize that what she really wants may have been right here all along. After Letty moved away, Chase poured his hurt and anger into fixing up his family’s ranch. Now that she’s back, he vows to stay as far away from her as possible, and yet he can’t ignore the rush of emotions he feels every time their paths cross. He may be risking heartbreak, but Chase has to face the past to build what he really wants: a future, and a family, with Letty. Praise for Debbie Macomber “No one tugs at readers’ heartstrings quite as effectively as Macomber.”—Chicago Tribune “The reigning queen of women’s fiction.”—The Sacramento Bee “It’s impossible not to cheer for Macomber’s characters. . . . When it comes to creating a special place and memorable, honorable characters, nobody does it better than Macomber.”—BookPage Published by Debbie Macomber Books
