Book Synopsis Chemistry And Biology Of Ellagitannins: An Underestimated Class Of Bioactive Plant Polyphenols by : Stephane Quideau
Download or read book Chemistry And Biology Of Ellagitannins: An Underestimated Class Of Bioactive Plant Polyphenols written by Stephane Quideau and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009-01-05 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind that focuses on the chemistry and biology of ellagitannins, a special class of naturally occurring polyphenols which have so far not received the attention they deserve. These polyphenolic substances are found in many plants, including numerous food sources. They not only exhibit unique structural features that fascinate most chemists who are aware of their existence, but also express remarkable biological activities that have yet to attract the interest of the pharmaceutical industry. This is surprising because ellagitannins have been identified as active principles in traditional Chinese medicines. The principal aim of this book is to set the record straight. Most, if not all, worldwide experts in each aspect of the chemistry and biology of this underestimated class of natural products have contributed to this book. It covers topics such as their structural determination and natural occurrence; the most up-to-date knowledge of their biosynthesis; the current state of the art of their total chemical synthesis; their main physicochemical properties and principal biological activities; their presence in food and beverages; and their related health effects. All together, nine chapters compose this book whose content is placed into historical perspective in a yet inspiring preface written by one of the pioneers in modern polyphenol research, Professor Edwin Haslam. This book will be useful not only to scientists involved in natural product research, but also to lecturers and their students as a source of key references and/or a textbook.
Book Synopsis Hollywood Highbrow by : Shyon Baumann
Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Goshenhoppen Reformed Charge, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (1727-1819): Part XXIX of a Narrative and Critical History Prepared at the Request of the Pennsylvania-German History In 1849, the Rev. Dr. Philip Schaff published in his Kirchenfreund, Vol. II, a series of three articles on the History of the German Church in America, in which he traced the origin and growth of the Reformed and Ln theran churches through three successive periods.vi Preface. But the man who may well be called the father of Re formed history in America was the Rev. Dr. Henry Har baugh. He not only secured the manuscripts and docu ments of Dr. Mayer for the use of the church and added to them many others which he collected himself, but upon the basis of these documents he wrote two splendid vol umes, which told the story of Reformed history in America with such real enthusiasm and beauty of style, that they have always remained sources of inspiration for later students. They were: Schlatter's Life and Trav els, Philadelphia, 1857, and The Fathers of the Re formed Church, Vol. I, Philadelphia, 1857. In 1872, Dr. Harbaugh added a second volume to the Fathers of the church. In these volumes the lives and labors of the most important German Reformed ministers in Amer ica were set forth. It remained for a former president of the Pennsylvania German Society, the late Rev. Dr. Joseph H. Dubbs, to write the first connected history in his Historic Manual of the Reformed Church in the United States, Lancaster, 1885. Later he corrected and completed the story in his contribution to the American Church History Series, Vol. VIII, New York, 1895, and especially in his beauti fully illustrated and well-written work The Reformed Church in Pennsylvania, published by our Society in 1902 as part IX of its Narrative and Critical History.
