Book Synopsis Friction in Sliding Orthodontic Mechanics by : James R. Gill
Download or read book Friction in Sliding Orthodontic Mechanics written by James R. Gill and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to patient 'demand' for more esthetic orthodontic appliances, brackets of aluminum-oxide ceramics and Teflon-coated archwires and ligature wires are now available to the practitioner. The round, coated archwires are potentially useful during cuspid retraction procedures in bicuspid-extraction orthodontic treatment. Controlled evaluation of frictional forces associated with the ceramic brackets and coated archwires (compared to conventional appliances components of stainless steel) has apparently not been reported in the literature to date. The objective of the present investigation was to measure and compare the magnitudes of frictional forces generated within a relevant sample of brackets, archwires, and ligations during simulated orthodontic edgewise sliding mechanics. Independent variables and their values were 1) bracket (stainless steel, single-crystal ceramic, and polycrystalline ceramic), 2) archwire (uncoated and Teflon-coated stainless steel), and 3) ligation (uncoated and Teflon-coated stainless-steel wires). With coated or uncoated archwires, polycrystalline brackets generated larger frictional forces than either stainless-steel or single-crystal brackets. Teflon-coated archwires in slots of either ceramic bracket generated smaller frictional forces than uncoated archwires, although the ceramic brackets tended to cause greater distressing of the surfaces of both archwires than did the stainless-steel brackets. Book Synopsis Frictional Resistance Evaluation of Orthodontic Brackets and Archwires with Sliding Mechanics Using Quantified Simulation of Canine Retraction by : Darryl V. Smith
Download or read book Frictional Resistance Evaluation of Orthodontic Brackets and Archwires with Sliding Mechanics Using Quantified Simulation of Canine Retraction written by Darryl V. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate by quantitative analysis the frictional resistance of bracket/archwire combinations using an experimental canine retraction model capable of tipping and uprighting to approximate orthodontic tooth movements representative of sliding mechanics. The friction testing apparatus for this study was comprised of an Instron testing machine apparatus, a load cell, and a servomotor interface for second order bracket control. This study demonstrated significant effects for bracket type, archwire type, archwire size, and archwire shape, as well as pair-wise interactions for bracket type/archwire type, bracket type/archwire size, bracket type/archwire shape, archwire type/archwire size, archwire type/archwire shape, and archwire size/archwire shape.
Book Synopsis Self Ligating Brackets by : Sangeeta Sunda
Download or read book Self Ligating Brackets written by Sangeeta Sunda and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing use of sliding mechanics in orthodontics has led to considerable research interest in the frictional forces developed due to interactions between the archwires and bracket.Reduced friction and light orthodontic forces are both biologically and mechanically advantageous as they reduce the undesirable reactionary forces, which can complicate the simplicity of the desired mechanics and also lead to root resorption. It is clear that the nature of ligation has a bearing on friction within the appliance system. Literature search on studies conducted reveal that SLB's have comparatively less friction than conventional ligating appliance system. Research on frictional resistance to orthodontic tooth movement in-vivo is complex, hence knowledge is almost entirely derived from laboratory-based investigations using simulated oral environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthodontic Applications of Biomaterials: A Clinical Guide reviews the applications of biomaterials and their effects on enamel preparation, bonding, bracket and archwire ligation, mechanotherapy, debonding, and long-term enamel structural, color, and surface effects. The book provides a step-by-step analysis of the phenomena occurring, their clinical importance, and their underlying cause without the use of complex mathematical or physical-chemical analyses, with the goal of providing ‘digestible’ evidence for the clinician. Serves as a reference source of the spectrum of biomaterials used in orthodontics Presents the most current evidence of state-of-the-art methods of materials research Provides substantiation for the effects occurring during the materials’ uses
Book Synopsis Intraoral Corrosion of Self-ligating Metallic Brackets and Archwires and the Effect on Friction by : Lori Lynn Tima
Download or read book Intraoral Corrosion of Self-ligating Metallic Brackets and Archwires and the Effect on Friction written by Lori Lynn Tima and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate how the frictional coefficient was affected due to intraoral use. A secondary aim of this study was to determine whether or not there was a relationship between corrosion of orthodontic alloys and friction via scanning electron microscopic qualitative analysis. Orthodontic brackets and 0.019 x 0.025 inch stainless steel archwires were collected and divided into three groups of n=10: used bracket and used wires (UBUW), used brackets and new wires (UBNW), and new brackets and new wires (NBNW). 'New' materials were as-received from the manufacturer, and 'used' materials were clinically used bracket and wires collected from patients following orthodontic treatment. Archwires were pulled through bracket slots at a rate of 0.5mm/min while friction forces were measured. Following a cleaning process, the surface topography of the bracket slots was examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Based on a 1-factor MANOVA, there was no significant group effect (all p>0.05) on frictional forces. Partial eta squared values indicated that intraoral exposure had only a small effect on frictional forces (
