Book excerpt: The authors have calculated the frequency spectrum of plane waves and beams propagating in a moving turbulent atmosphere. Both the case when the atmosphere moves with a constant wind and the case when the wind velocity is distributed according to a gaussian centered about some average velocity is considered. The results indicate that for small propagation distances, the frequency spectrum behaves as omega sup -8/3 for large frequency, omega; for large propagation distances, the spectrum is broadened with increasing distance-with the broadening dependent upon the beam parameters and the wind velocity. Book excerpt: The book introduces optical wave propagation in the irregular turbulent atmosphere and the relations to laser beam and LIDAR applications for both optical communication and imaging. It examines atmosphere fundamentals, structure, and content. It explains specific situations occurring in the irregular atmosphere and for specific natural phenomena that affect optical ray and laser beam propagation. It emphasizes how to use LIDAR to investigate atmospheric phenomena and predict primary parameters of the irregular turbulent atmosphere and suggests what kinds of optical devices to operate in different atmospheric situations to minimize the deleterious effects of natural atmospheric phenomena.

Book excerpt: This monograph describes the phenomena associated with the propagation of electromagnetic and acoustic waves through atmospheric turbulence. Geared toward specialists in radiophysics and atmospheric acoustics and optics, the treatment is also suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. The author stresses applications to phase and amplitude fluctuations, scintillation of stars, radio scattering, and other problems. Part I covers topics from the theory of random fields and turbulence theory, including statistical description. Part II, on the scattering of waves in the turbulent atmosphere, is supplemented by an appendix on scattering of acoustic radiation. Part III offers a detailed presentation of line-of-sight propagation of acoustic and electromagnetic waves through a turbulent medium. Part IV concludes the text with a comparison of theory with experimental data

Book excerpt: The pertinent theoretical background and the results of a group of experiments conducted over 0.4- and 1.17-km near-ground horizontal ranges are presented. (1) The log-amplitude variances for HeNe (0.633 μm) and CO2 (10.6 μm) laser beams were found to have a ratio of 26.8, which is in close agreement with the predictions of Rytov-based spherical-wave theory. (2) Published measurements of the saturation level of the log-amplitude variance are reviewed and several inconsistencies noted. (3) The spatial correlation function of irradiance field was measured and found to agree with theory. The degree of correlation between different frequency beams which had traversed the same optical path was also measured and compared to theory. The data exhibited an unacceptably large scatter and did not show the wavelength dependence. (4) The log-normal, Rayleigh, and Rice probability distributions are discussed in terms of their applicability to irradiance statistics. Relatively weak 10.6 μm irradiance fluctuations were found to be equally well described by the log-normal and Rice distributions; strong fluctuations obtained at 0.488 μm were clearly best described by the log-normal distribution.

Book excerpt: Numerical results have been obtained for the effect of the strength of turbulence on the intensity, mutual coherence function, and frequency spectrum of a focussed beam propagating in a random medium having a von Karman spectrum for the index of refraction fluctuations. The author has presented conditions for when the turbulence affects the nature of the beam and has demonstrated the validity of these conditions by comparison with the numerical results. (Author).

Book excerpt: Starting from the parabolic equation for a wave propagating in a random medium, the equation for the general mutual coherence function is derived, and a solution is obtained for the same using a perturbation technique, assuming the Kolmogorov spectrum for the fluctuations of the refractive index. It is shown that the solution so obtained is exact when the coherence function is evaluated at a single point and at the same time, but at two different frequencies. Using this exact solution for the two frequency correlation function, the propagation characteristics of a plane wave Gaussian and rectangular pulses are studied at mm and optical wavelengths. Book excerpt: The work presents the development and demonstration of a propagation technique for investigating fine scale structure of turbulent atmospheric flows. The theoretical basis for the technique is found in extant expressions for the covariance of the logarithmic amplitude of an electromagnetic wave propagated through a random medium consisting of weak inhomogeneities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave or weak turbulence is a branch of science concerned with the evolution of random wave fields of all kinds and on all scales, from waves in galaxies to capillary waves on water surface, from waves in nonlinear optics to quantum fluids. In spite of the enormous diversity of wave fields in nature, there is a common conceptual and mathematical core which allows to describe the processes of random wave interactions within the same conceptual paradigm, and in the same language. The development of this core and its links with the applications is the essence of wave turbulence science (WT) which is an established integral part of nonlinear science. The book comprising seven reviews aims at discussing new challenges in WT and perspectives of its development. A special emphasis is made upon the links between the theory and experiment. Each of the reviews is devoted to a particular field of application (there is no overlap), or a novel approach or idea. The reviews cover a variety of applications of WT, including water waves, optical fibers, WT experiments on a metal plate and observations of astrophysical WT.
