Book excerpt: Modular DC Zonal Electrical Distribution (DC ZEDS) offers advantages in both cost and weight over traditional radial shipboard distribution. In order to equip the next class of surface combatant with DC ZEDS, preparative research includes the design of autonomous dc-to-dc power converter modules having robust load sharing capability. This thesis examines the combined utility of current- mode switch control and frequency-based load sharing to promote equal load sharing among parallel dc-to-dc converter modules. Current-mode control with frequency-based load sharing is analyzed primarily with digital simulation. To that end, a state-space representation for a system of two converters and an Advanced Continuous Simulation Language (ACSL) simulation for a system of three converters are developed. Various studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of a proposed system for load sharing performance between dissimilar converters, for step changes in load, and for bringing a converter off-line. Additionally, a sub-circuit of frequency-based control-the rms frequency estimation circuit-was built, and its static performance evaluated. Finally, recommendations are made for further simulations which will better test the dynamic performance of this rms estimation circuit and the system of parallel converters employing frequency-based load sharing as a whole.

Book excerpt: A 4-phase, quasi-current-mode hysteretic buck converter with digital frequency synchronization, online comparator offset-calibration and digital current sharing control is presented. The switching frequency of the hysteretic converter is digitally synchronized to the input clock reference with less than ±1.5% error in the switching frequency range of 3-9.5MHz. The online offset calibration cancels the input-referred offset of the hysteretic comparator and enables ±1.1% voltage regulation accuracy. Maximum current-sharing error of ±3.6% is achieved by a duty-cycle-calibrated delay line based PWM generator, without affecting the phase synchronization timing sequence. In light load conditions, individual converter phases can be disabled, and the final stage power converter output stage is segmented for high efficiency. The DC-DC converter achieves 93% peak efficiency for Vi = 2V and Vo = 1.6V.

Book excerpt: Switch-Mode Power Converters introduces an innovative, highly analytical approach to symbolic, closed-form solutions for switched-mode power converter circuits. This is a highly relevant topic to power electronics students and professionals who are involved in the design and analysis of electrical power converters. The author uses extensive equations to explain how solid-state switches convert electrical voltages from one level to another, so that electronic devices (e.g., audio speakers, CD players, DVD players, etc.) can use different voltages more effectively to perform their various functions. Most existing comparable books published as recently as 2002 do not discuss closed-loop operations, nor do they provide either DC closed-loop regulation equations or AC loop gain (stability) formulae. The author Wu, a leading engineer at Lockheed Martin, fills this gap and provides among the first descriptions of how error amplifiers are designed in conjunction with closed-loop bandwidth selection. BENEFIT TO THE READER: Readers will gain a mathematically rigorous introduction to numerous, closed-form solutions that are readily applicable to the design and development of various switch-mode power converters. Provides symbolic, closed-form solutions for DC and AC studies Provides techniques for expressing close-loop operation Gives readers the ability to perform closed-loop regulation and sensitivity studies Gives readers the ability to design error amplifiers with precision Employs the concept of the continuity of states in matrix form Gives accelerated time-domain, steady-state studies using Laplace transform Gives accelerated time-domain studies using state transition Extensive use of matrix, linear algebra, implicit functions, and Jacobian determinants Enables the determination of power stage gain that otherwise could not be obtained

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever-increasing need for higher efficiency, smaller size, and lower cost make the analysis, understanding, and design of energy conversion systems extremely important, interesting, and even imperative. One of the most neglected features in the study of such systems is the effect of the inherent nonlinearities on the stability of the system. Due to these nonlinearities, these devices may exhibit undesirable and complex dynamics, which are the focus of many researchers. Even though a lot of research has taken place in this area during the last 20 years, it is still an active research topic for mainstream power engineers. This research has demonstrated that these systems can become unstable with a direct result in increased losses, extra subharmonics, and even uncontrollability/unobservability. The detailed study of these systems can help in the design of smaller, lighter, and less expensive converters that are particularly important in emerging areas of research like electric vehicles, smart grids, renewable energy sources, and others. The aim of this Special Issue is to cover control and nonlinear aspects of instabilities in different energy conversion systems: theoretical, analysis modelling, and practical solutions for such emerging applications. In this Special Issue, we present novel research works in different areas of the control and nonlinear dynamics of energy conversion systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple module dc-dc converters show promise in meeting the increasing demands on ef- ficiency and performance of energy conversion systems. In order to increase reliability, maintainability, and expandability, a modular approach in converter design is often desired. This thesis proposes local control of multiple module converters as an alternative to using a central controller or master controller. A power ratings-based load sharing scheme that allows for uniform and non-uniform sharing is introduced. Focus is given to an input series, output parallel (ISOP) configuration and modules with a push-pull topology. Sensorless current mode (SCM) control is digitally implemented on separate controllers for each of the modules. The benefits of interleaving the switching signals of the distributed modules is presented. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate stable, ratings-based sharing in an ISOP converter with a high conversion ratio for both uniform and non-uniform load sharing cases.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The discrete iterative map model of peak current-mode controlled buck converter with constant current load (CCL), containing the output voltage feedback and ramp compensation, is established in this paper. Based on this model the complex dynamics of this converter is investigated by analyzing bifurcation diagrams and the Lyapunov exponent spectrum. The effects of ramp compensation and output voltage feedback on the stability of the converter are investigated. Experimental results verify the simulation and theoretical analysis. The stability boundary and chaos boundary are obtained under the theoretical conditions of period-doubling bifurcation and border collision. It is found that there are four operation regions in the peak current-mode controlled buck converter with CCL due to period-doubling bifurcation and border-collision bifurcation. Research results indicate that ramp compensation can extend the stable operation range and transfer the operating mode, and output voltage feedback can eventually eliminate the coexisting fast-slow scale instability.

Book excerpt: The only method of circuit analysis known to most engineers and students is nodal or loop analysis. Although this works well for obtaining numerical solutions, it is almost useless for obtaining analytical solutions in all but the simplest cases. In this unusual 2002 book, Vorpérian describes remarkable alternative techniques to solve, almost by inspection, complicated linear circuits in symbolic form and obtain meaningful analytical answers for any transfer function or impedance. Although not intended to replace traditional computer-based methods, these techniques provide engineers with a powerful set of tools for tackling circuit design problems. They also have great value in enhancing students' understanding of circuit operation, making this an ideal course book, and numerous problems and worked examples are included. Originally developed by Professor David Middlebrook and others at Caltech (California Institute of Technology), the techniques described here are now widely taught at institutions and companies around the world.
