Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FRENCH STUDIES AND MASTERY is carefully divided into grammar, general words, phrases and reading passages. The grammar section is so customized that it will offer the student the essentials of basic French grammar. Sandwiched within the compartment on the grammar are the general words and phrasal constructions the student will need in getting started in speaking French. Unlike most French manuals for beginners which are formulated in such a way that the student must always be running to the teacher for guidance; and once lectures are over, the student cannot use the manual independently, French Studies and Mastery has a special characteristic: the student, using the pronunciation exercise and the phonetic transcription of the words and phrases, can on his own in the absence of the teacher read the book. Moreover the Anglophone learner of the French language will have no difficulty getting at the meanings of the words, phrases and sentences as the translations are provided. The last part of the book is a readership section. Here each text has explanatory images, as well as vocabulary, oral and written composition, grammar and comprehension exercises. This section is a pedagogical tool that helps the student to start telling stories about different fields of life. He can also start to put these stories down in writing. The author Fr. Dr. Dr. Ikechukwu, Aloysius, Orjinta has PhD in French Studies/European Studies (University of Ibadan, Nigeria), PhD in German Studies and Political Science (University of Munich, Germany). He has also a B.A. French/German from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria and B.A.Theology from Urban University, Rome, Italy. He is therefore over qualified to embark on this exercise. I therefore recommend French Mastery for general studies programme in universities where French is a GEDS (General Studies) course or where French is a degree or second language course. - Prof. Joseph Ukoyen Department of European Studies/University of Ibadan, Nigeria

Book excerpt: Caribbean Critique seeks to define and analyse the distinctive contribution of francophone Caribbean thinkers to post-Kantian Critical Theory. The book argues that the singular project of these thinkers has been to forge a brand of critique that, while borrowing tools from North Atlantic predecessors such as Rousseau, Hegel, Marx, and Lukacs, was from the start marked indelibly by the experiential imperatives of the Middle Passage, slavery and imperialism. Individual chapters address thinkers such as Toussaint Louverture, Victor Schoelcher, Aime and Suzanne Cesaire, Rene Menil, Frantz Fanon & Maryse Conde.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to Transnational French Studies situate this disciplinary subfield of Modern Languages in actively transnational frameworks. The key objective of the volume is to define the core set of skills and methodologies that constitute the study of French culture as a transnational, transcultural and translingual phenomenon. Written by leading scholars within the field, chapters demonstrate the type of inquiry that can be pursued into the transnational realities – both material and non-material – that are integral to what is referred to as French culture. The book considers the transnational dimensions of being human in the world by focussing on four key practices which constitute the object of study for students of French: language and multilingualism; the construction of transcultural places and the corresponding sense of space; the experience of time; and transnational subjectivities. The underlying premise of the volume is that the transnational is present (and has long been present) throughout what we define as French history and culture. Chapters address instances and phenomena associated with the transnational, from prehistory to the present, opening up the geopolitical map of French studies beyond France and including sites where communities identified as French have formed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mastery of French, Direct Method, Vol. 1: A Series of Lessons, Including a Simple Key to Pronunciation, Which Will Enable the Student to Read and Understand the Language, and Through His Power to Speak Correctly, Will Give Him the Confidence to Express His Thoughts in French Most French sounds have their equivalents in English sounds which the student is using every day. If, then, he can be led to see that the appalling French (3 is really his own familiar e in egg, that the French e has the sound of a in fate and that most of the consonants have the same sounds in both languages, he will realize that his tongue has no need to learn a new cunning. When he appreciates the many equivalent sounds of the two languages and has fixed in mind the Eng lish type words which give the key to the French sounds, he has acquired a basis for independence in French pronuncia tion. With this foundation and with constant and repeated drill his confidence in his ability to pronounce will increase rapidly. When the teacher pronounces a word, he can pic ture it. The pronunciation of new words will offer little difficulty. The simple Key to French pronunciation which is given in the introductory part of this volume will prove a short cut to rapid progress. Its mastery will enable a student to apply the Direct Method from the start in a way which cannot help securing results in the shortest possible time, in under standing, in speaking and in thinking in French.
