Book Synopsis Manitoba's French-Language Crisis by : Raymond Hébert
Download or read book Manitoba's French-Language Crisis written by Raymond Hébert and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raymond Hebert analyses Manitoba's French-language crisis in detail and considers its local and national implications. For nine months in 1983 and early 1984, beginning with a protest by French-speaking Manitobans, who had received parking tickets written only in English and ending with a legal compromise that made Manitoba all but officially bilingual, Manitoba endured charged demonstrations, grimly fought plebiscites, and legislative filibustering. Towards the end of the crisis, legislative paralysis set in and the government itself ground to a halt. Hebert argues that, far from being a spontaneous populist movement, the crisis was largely manufactured by a few individuals, some of whom were in the Legislative Assembly itself. Hebert considers various theoretical models to explain aspects of the crisis and concludes that the authoritarian personality model is the most relevant. Right-wing authoritarianism exists everywhere and, he argues, under proper conditions, especially demagogic leadership, can provoke populist explosions of racist and prejudiced sentiment; and hence the cautionary nature of this Canadian tale.

Download or read book When in French written by Lauren Collins and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A language barrier is no match for love. Lauren Collins discovered this firsthand when, in her early thirties, she moved to London and fell for a Frenchman named Olivier—a surprising turn of events for someone who didn’t have a passport until she was in college. But what does it mean to love someone in a second language? Collins wonders, as her relationship with Olivier continues to grow entirely in English. Are there things she doesn’t understand about Olivier, having never spoken to him in his native tongue? Does “I love you” even mean the same thing as “je t’aime”? When the couple, newly married, relocates to Francophone Geneva, Collins—fearful of one day becoming "a Borat of a mother" who doesn’t understand her own kids—decides to answer her questions for herself by learning French. When in French is a laugh-out-loud funny and surprising memoir about the lengths we go to for love, as well as an exploration across culture and history into how we learn languages—and what they say about who we are. Collins grapples with the complexities of the French language, enduring excruciating role-playing games with her classmates at a Swiss language school and accidently telling her mother-in-law that she’s given birth to a coffee machine. In learning French, Collins must wrestle with the very nature of French identity and society—which, it turns out, is a far cry from life back home in North Carolina. Plumbing the mysterious depths of humanity’s many forms of language, Collins describes with great style and wicked humor the frustrations, embarrassments, surprises, and, finally, joys of learning—and living in—French.

Book Synopsis French Language Policies and the Revitalisation of Regional Languages in the 21st Century by : Michelle A. Harrison
Download or read book French Language Policies and the Revitalisation of Regional Languages in the 21st Century written by Michelle A. Harrison and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-11 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume presents an analysis of the evolution of French language policies and their impact on French regional languages and their communities. It gathers studies on language revitalisation from several territorial minority languages (Breton, Alsatian, Catalan, Occitan, Basque, Corsican, Francoprovençal, Picard, Reunionese) and evaluates the challenges and opportunities that they face in the 21st century. The chapters tackle different aspects of language endangerment and language planning and adopt varied theoretical and methodological approaches. The first section of the book reconsiders the difficulties in establishing linguistic boundaries and classification for some regional languages. The second section examines the important theme of the new generation of speakers with issues of transmission and identity formation and the changes they can bring to traditional communities. The third section highlights new developments in the context of new technologies and the heightened visibility of regional languages. Finally, the last section presents an overview of the contemporary situation of minority language revitalisation in France and synthesises the key trends identified in this volume: from the educational domain to the European Charter for Minority and Regional languages. This book will appeal to students and scholars of the sociology of language, sociolinguistics, language policy, minority languages and language endangerment.

Book Synopsis Speaking Out on Human Rights by : Pearl Eliadis
Download or read book Speaking Out on Human Rights written by Pearl Eliadis and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadians like to see themselves as champions of human rights in the international community. Closer to home, however, the human rights system in Canada - particularly its public institutions such as commissions and tribunals - has been the object of sustained debate and vehement criticism, based largely on widespread myths about how it works. In Speaking Out on Human Rights, Pearl Eliadis explodes these myths, analysing the pervasive distortions and errors on which they depend. Canada's human rights system, a unique legal tradition operating within a powerful modern constitution, is a fundamental mechanism for ensuring the practical application of our national commitment to tolerance and inclusion. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Canada's leading human rights experts and extensive original research, Eliadis explores the evolution of commissions and tribunals as vehicles of public policy and considers their mandate to mediate rights conflicts in such contested areas as hate speech, religious freedoms, and sexuality. She provides a frank assessment of how Canada's human rights system functions and argues that misplaced critiques have prevented urgent and necessary discussions about the reforms that are needed to improve fairness and equality before the law and to ensure institutional independence, impartiality, and competence. Speaking Out on Human Rights shows how our human rights system plays a unique and important role in the rights revolution both in Canada and internationally and offers promising avenues for its future development.
