Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Exiles of Louisiana Tyranny doth justice spurn, Transforms a vase into an urn; Thanks, that from the blood of hero slain, Liberty springs to life again. The People vs. The King. The Duke of Wellington cost England, in the shape of pay, pensions, etc., the sum of fourteen millions of dollars. The parliamentary returns of March 23, 1S47, give the annual direct cost of royalty in England, the enormous sum of three millions eight hundred and forty-five thousand eight hundred and twenty-five dollars. The whole landed estate of England is in the hands of thirty thousand proprietors; Scotland, three thousand; Ireland, about six thousand. The lands belong to the aristocratic class, and are nearly exempt from taxation. In the report of 1847, the whole amount of land tax in Great Britain, was the sum of five millions nine hundred and fifteen thousand dollars, while the merchants, farmers, and the industrial classes, of every description, paid the sum of two hundred and forty-seven millions one hundred and sixty thousand dollars. In the above sum of money that is required to support royalty, there is an item of over one million of dollars for the private purse of the Queen. A verse from the national song of England: God save the king! Send him victorious, Soon to reign over us; God save the king! There are two chapters in the history of England that present two pictures. The one is full of joy, the other sorrow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Colonists and Exiles in the United States The French settlers in the United States have not received the attention due to them. Parkman and Bancroft and Roosevelt have dwelt upon the early history of the French in this country, and Fortier has given us an admirable work on the history of Louisiana. Many French authors and travellers have written about the United States, but little attention has been paid to the colonies settled with more or less success in the closing years of the Eighteenth and the beginning of the Nineteenth Centuries. Some accounts are found in local publications, those of state historical societies or in the pamphlets written by local authors, but these are not easily accessible. M.Anatole Le Braz, well known for his books on Brittany, suggested that a collected story be given of the efforts to establish French colonies in the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Purchase: As It Was, and as It Is Little did either France or the United States dream, on that eventful last day of April, 1803, of all that lay in the sale by the one, and the purchase by the other, of the vast and unknown territory called Louisiana. But at the distance of a century one is able to gauge somewhat the event that at one bold business stroke doubled the area of the young republic; and made possi ble the founding of a dozen great and masterful states. Next to the winning of our national independence, the purchase of Louisiana had perhaps the largest influence in the development of our country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On May 10, 1785, the Bon Papa, a modest three-master of 280 tons, hoisted its sails at Paimboeuf, France, near Nantes, and headed west. On board were thirty-six families whom the owner of the boat had promised to bring to port. The ship, which arrived at its destination on July 29, 1785--after eighty days on the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico waters--was only the first of seven ships carrying nearly 1,600 Acadians to Spain's Louisiana colony. Thirty years, almost to the day, before the arrival of Bon Papa in New Orleans, seven or eight times as many Acadians had embarked on ships from Nova Scotia, Canada. Between July 28 and July 31, 1755, the English governor of the colony, Charles Lawrence, as a prelude to the Seven Years' War, made the decision to expel all inhabitants of French origin within his territory. Many of the exiled Acadians were deported to the American colonies, the Caribbean, Britain, or France. Nearly one-third of those deported died from disease or drownings. Those who did survive the journey often struggled to survive and assimilate in their new communities, even in their motherland of France. This book examines the Acadians while exiled in France. Based on a tremendous amount of primary source research, Mouhot tells their story in great detail, while he also challenges many previous interpretations and understandings of their experiences in their "homeland."

Book excerpt: This anthology constitutes the first attempt to fill comprehensively one of the most enduring lacunae in Louisiana historiography--the French-Antillian migration to the lower Mississippi Valley. Generations of Louisiana historians have neglected this influx, involving more than 10,000 Saint-Domingue refugees between 1792 and 1810. These newcomers were subsequently joined by far smaller numbers of French citizens from Guadeloupe and Martinique. Not only were these immigrants largely responsible for the establishment and success of the state's sugar industry, but they also gave New Orleans many of its most notable early institutions--the French opera, newspapers, schools, and colleges--and ultimately its antebellum French flavor. The refugees also contributed Creole cuisine, Creole language, okra, and voodoo to their adopted homeland.--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: Reissued for the first time in over thirty years, Black New Orleans explores the twenty-year period in which the city’s black population more than doubled. Meticulously researched and replete with archival illustrations from newspapers and rare periodicals, John W. Blassingame’s groundbreaking history offers a unique look at the economic and social life of black people in New Orleans during Reconstruction. Not a conventional political treatment, Blassingame’s history instead emphasizes the educational, religious, cultural, and economic activities of African Americans during the late nineteenth century. “Blending historical and sociological perspectives, and drawing with skill and imagination upon a variety of sources, [Blassingame] offers fresh insights into an oft-studied period of Southern history. . . . In both time and place the author has chosen an extraordinarily revealing vantage point from which to view his subject. ”—Neil R. McMillen, American Historical Review

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lafitte of Louisiana Of Jean Lafitte's career, it may be said, from what is known of it and by reason of the inferences to be drawn from established facts, that it was one of adventure and peril comparing well with those of the men who, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, sought wealth and fame in the new world. As to the man himself, he was, by nature and education, infinitely superior to these others. True to his ancestry and to himself, he was actuated by high motives and loyal instincts, and rendered invaluable services to the country in which he passed a short period of his eventful life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Louisiana, Vol. 1 When I had finished my composition, like most people who act first and then set themselves to thinking, I began to guess, as some of my Yankee friends would say, whether I could not apply the fruits of my labor to some practical purpose. I had achieved one thing, it'is true - I had rendered seclusion pleas ant to myself; but could I not do more? Would there not be sweet satisfaction in extracting something useful to my fel low-citizens from the careless and unpretending effusions, the object of which had originally been to accelerate the flight of a few heavy hours, which I descried at a short distance, coming upon me with their leaden wings and their gouty feet!
