They dreamed of a golden age in the past, in which humble simplicity and trust ful dependence on the part Of'the laborer were met by generous benevolence and protecting care on the part Of the master. They thought it possible to re store a time in which the Shepherd Of Salisbury Plain, happy and contented because a kind Providence had granted him salt for his potatoes, filled an ideal posi tion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution and Modern French Socialism: A Comparative Study of the Principles of the French Revolution and the Doctrines of Modern French Socialism On the other hand, there is a real and interesting separation in the social philosophy of the two doctrines. The later theory asks that an additional right be as sured to the individual, and therefore that government assume one new function, and it bases its claim for these changes on an idea of social progress different from that of the Revolutionists. The following pages aim to demonstrate these like nesses and differences. If the matter they present ap pears insufficient or the result of immature judgment, it is hoped it will, in any event, be an inspiration for some stronger work along lines which, it seems to the writer, cannot but be helpful in adding to a better understanding of latter-day problems. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism, Utopian and Scientific The present little. Book is, originally, a part of a larger whole.'about 1875, Dr. E. Diihring, privat docent at Berlin University, suddenly and rather clamorously announced his conversion to Socialism, and presented the German public not only with an elaborate Socialist theory, but also with a complete practical plan for the reorganization of society. As a matter of course, he fell foul of his predecessors; above all, he honored Marx by pouring out upon him the full vials of his wrath. This took place about the time when the two sec tions of the Socialist party in Germany - Eisenach ers and Lassallians - had just efi'ected their fusion, and thus obtained not only an immense increase of strength, but, what was more, the faculty of em ploying the whole of this strength against the com mon enemy. The Socialist party in Germany was fast becoming a power. But to make it a power, the first condition was that the newly-conquered unity 'should not be imperiled. And Dr. Diihring openly proceeded to form around himself a sect, the nucleus of a future separate party. It thus became necessary to take up the gauntlet thrown down to us, and to fight out the struggle whether we liked it or not. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manifesto of the Communist Party The "Manifesto" was published as the platform of the "Communist League," a working men's association, first exclusively German, later an international, and under the political conditions of the Continent before 1848, unavoidably a secret society. At a Congress of the League, held in London in November, 1847, Marx and Engels were commissioned to prepare for publication a complete theoretical and practical party-program. Drawn up in German, in January, 1848, the manuscript was sent to the printer in London a few weeks before the French revolution of February 24th. A French translation was brought out in Paris, shortly before the insurrection of June, 1848. The first English translation, by Miss Helen Macfarlane, appeared in George Julian Harney's "Red Republication," London, 1850. A Danish and a Polish edition had also been published. The defeat of the Parisian insurrection of June, 1848 - the first great battle between Proletariat and Bourgeoisie - drove again into the background, for a time, the social and political aspirations of the European working class.
