Associated with The Hills community in Westchester County, New York, the soldiers served in three regiments: the 29th Connecticut Infantry, 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery (11th USCT), and the 20th USCT. The thirty-sixth Hills man served in the Navy. Their ties to family, land, church, school, and occupational experiences at home buffered the brutal indifference of boredom and battle, the ravages of illness, the deprivations of unequal pay, and the hostility of some commissioned officers and white troops. At the same time, their service among kith and kin bolstered their determination and pride. They marched together, first as raw recruits, and finally as seasoned veterans, welcomed home by generals, politicians, and above all, their families and friends. It was while in prison, like Solzhenitsyn and Dostoevsky, that he began to ponder deeper issues and on release trained to be a Russian orthodox priest. This extraordinary but short book is about his search for true freedom. The issues he wrestles with are profound and, like any confrontation with truth, it caused him great anguish and pain. Of course subsequently I came to realise that freedom is not given, you have to take responsibility for it.' It was during this time that he discovered Christianity and decided that this was the real meaning of his life. Later, after a period spent with the Russian Orthodox community in London, Ovsiannikov lived for the last twenty years of his life in Amsterdam in charge of the Russian Orthodox community. Drawing heavily on Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Pushkin and translated from the original Russian by celebrated translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky with an introduction by Rowan Williams, this brief spiritual book is a small masterpiece of its kind.

He has appreciated so much about his new country harboring him and he was determined to serve and help protect the freedom and democracy for his new motherland. He joined the United States Navy and became a sailor, serving multiple deployments. He was very happy and dreamed to become a Navy jet fighter pilot someday. Unfortunately, he got injured while performing his duty. His medical separation from the US Navy saddened his heart and soul. Now he, as a disable veteran, had to fight for survival for himself and his family with two small daughters. He had to return to college and further his education. He overcame all major obstacles and impediments mentally and physically; he graduated from a Doctor of Pharmacy program from Nova Southeastern University. Since then, he has been working as a pharmacist to support his family. He was extremely happy to have another opportunity to serve his patients, his community. However, his old injury continues to aggravate him over the years; nonetheless, he continues to fight to support his family and serve the people he loves.
