Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bird by Bird for the African-American market--A top-notch writer's guide filled with practical guidance, essays, and journal exercises for the African-American writer including advice from E.Lynn Harris, Charles Johnson, and Yolanda Joe. In her introduction, Jewell Parker Rhodes writes: "Never (in four years of college or five years of graduate school) was I assigned an exercise or given a story example that included a person of color...While the educational system and the publishing world have become progressively more welcoming of African-American authors, there is still little attention to educating, supporting, and sustaining the writing process of African-American authors. Free Within Ourselves is a solid first step--it is the book I wished I had when I started out as a writer. It is meant to be a song of encouragement for African-American artisits and visionaries. Free Within Ourselves is a step-by-step introduction to fictional technique, exploring story ideas, and charting one's progress, as well as a resource guide for publishing fiction." For the legions of people who have a novel stuck in their word processors, help is finally on the way! Free Within Ourselves is an excellent guide to all the elements necessary to crafting fiction: character development, point of view, plot, atmosphere, dialogue, diction, sentence variety, and revision. Writing techniques are taught using exercises, journaling, story examples, and analyses of famous writing fragments, as well as several complete stories (including those of James Baldwin, Zora Neale Hurston, and Edwidge Dandicat, among others). The book is further enhanced by inspirational advice from successful contemporary black writers (such as Bebe Moore Campbell, Rita Dove, Henry Louis Gates, John Edgar Wideman, and others), a bibliography, and a guide to workshops, journals, magazines, contests, and fellowships supportive of black arts.

The writer raises an alarm, after 4 decades as an Educationist, wondering, if the Aspirations of the Founding Fathers are realized, by those to whom authority has been entrusted for the Divine purpose. Or have there been subtle shifts and switches that are neither Transparent nor Accountable. A tale of two women, the teacher and the taught. The one who paved the way, the direction of which she lost herself. Was this then a journey a transgression in transition. The water in a glass can quench your thirst, provided you have it. The water in the deep sea, can drown you, unless you can swim The water in the glass, cannot drown you, and the water in the deep sea cannot quench your thirst . Such is the complexity of life, what can save you, can also drown you, and what drowns you can also save you. What are we trained with, and what is ingrained in us. In our weakness is there strength, and in our strength is there a weakness. When does the actor within us become an audience, and when from the audience emerges an actor

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. "God's dynamic initiative" is the main theme of biblical testimony, says Christoph Barth. Here he expounds the message of the Old Testament in a manner that is faithful to the Old Testament itself -- as an account of the mighty acts of God rather than a series of abstract doctrines. A theology of the Old Testament is not simply a study of God, however. Old Testament theology also encompasses teaching about the world and humanity, about life and death, about origin, nature, and destiny. And Old Testament theology must also take into account the New Testament, which confirms what is announced in Israel's Scripture and thus is part of it. Barth elucidates the importance of the Old Testament for the New Testament and hence for Christians, surveys God's redemptive acts as recorded in the confessional summaries of history in the Old and New Testaments, and offers contemporary applications of these biblical themes. Working his way through the Old Testament, Barth treats nine key topics, each of which deals with one of the divine acts that are the essential subject matter of Israel's Scripture: creation, election of the patriarchs, exodus, wilderness wandering, Sinai revelation, gift of Canaan, election of David (kingship), election of Jerusalem and sending of prophets. He has divided each of the nine chapters into sections on one main aspect of the topic, considering theological, anthropological, soteriological, and eschatological points as well. Throughout his examination of each theme Barth pays special attention to its scriptural context. God With Us is an excellent textbook for introductory or survey courses in the Old Testament: each section begins with a thesis statement, summarizing its contents, and details are treated in small-print sections. Barth originally wrote his Old Testament theology in Indonesian and later rewrote the entire book in English; Geoffrey Bromiley has condensed the original four volumes in this edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ... then this statement is particularly applicable to thoughts about Christianity. Something absolutely new could only be false here; everything true has already been felt, understood and expressed by someone over many centuries of the Christian era. But restating these old truths does not mean falling into the platitude of “discovering America.” Everything experienced and perceived, insofar as it is possible to express it somewhat accurately, no matter how old and well-known it may be, is in some sense renewed, reveals itself from some new side. Bearing the imprint of living personal experience, it thereby reflects the uniqueness of a given era, a given spiritual situation - and, in the end, becomes as new and unique as any specific human experience is new and unique. And, on the other hand, without this connection with living experience, i.e., recognized only as a traditional, inherited teaching, the content of faith fades and loses its living meaning.

Book excerpt: This volume features in-depth, oral interviews with eleven incarcerated women, each of whom offers a narrative of her life and her reading experiences within prison walls. The women share powerful stories about their complex and diverse efforts to negotiate difficult relationships, exercise agency in restrictive circumstances, and find meaning and beauty in the midst of pain. Their shared emphases on abuse, poverty, addiction, and mental illness illuminate the pathways that lead many women to prison and suggest possibilities for addressing the profound social problems that fuel crime. Framing the narratives within an analytic introduction and reflective afterword, Megan Sweeney highlights the crucial intellectual work that the incarcerated women perform despite myriad restrictions on reading and education in U.S. prisons. These women use the limited reading materials available to them as sources of guidance and support and as tools for self-reflection and self-education. Through their creative engagements with books, the women learn to reframe their own life stories, situate their experiences in relation to broader social patterns, deepen their understanding of others, experiment with new ways of being, and maintain a sense of connection with their fellow citizens on both sides of the prison fence.

Book excerpt: The President recently said, "Our purpose as a nation is firm, yet our wounds as a people are recent and unhealed and lead us to pray. We ask almighty God to watch over our nation and grant us patience and resolve in all that is to come." God Be With Us is the first book written specifically to deal with this crisis. It aims to guide Americans through the turbulent times yet to come. The daily meditations will help readers pray for our leaders, families, communities, churches, armed forces, civil servants, and even our enemies. The authors will suggest prayers for thanksgiving, resolve, forgiveness, and unity. At this crucial time in our history as a nation, God Be With Us implores us to do the one thing of which we are all capable: pray. Quin Sherrer and Ruthanne Garlock have co-authored numerous bestsellers on the subject of prayer. They are popular speakers and have appeared on numerous television programs regarding the topic.
