This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The #1 Indian bestseller now available to Kindle readers worldwideWhen it was published in paperback in India in 2005, Open Secrets became an instant sensation. It became the #1 Non-Fiction bestseller, a position it held for many months and generated a firestorm of controversy. There were court cases, death threats against the author, intense debates in the media and a change in India's Official Secrets Act after the issues raised in the book caused uproar in Parliament. All of this is in hindsight not surprising as Open Secrets was the first of its kind- the first time a retired Indian Intelligence Bureau Officer penned his memoirs- detailing his thirty-year career and offering unprecedented insights into some of the pivotal moments of Indian history and a peek into the political machinations that underly them. More than an expose, Open Secrets was a heartfelt plea for more transparency and accountability in India's security and intelligence apparatus- to free them to serve and protect the people of India, and not just their political masters. That debate has special resonance today in the light of the growing popular movement demanding more transparency and less corruption in Indian public life. Open Secrets is regarded as a seminal work for its fearless exposure of the Indian political system and its insightful detailing of the course of modern Indian history's turning points.ABOUT THE AUTHORMaloy Krishna Dhar began life as a journalist and a teacher, but ended up spending more than thirty years as an officer in India's Intelligence Bureau, retiring as its Joint Director. During his highly decorated career, he handled the sensitive Pakistan and Counter-terror desks, when he got a first-hand exposure to fighting the specter of Islamic terror that many Western readers were to remain blissfully unaware of till the tragic events of 9/11. After his retirement, he went back to his original love, and became a bestselling author and a recognized and highly respected authority on security matters. He passed away in May 2012, and his son, Amazon.com bestselling author Mainak Dhar, is now bringing his work to readers worldwide. Download or read book Late Constable Hb written by and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On John Constable as a proto-abstractionist of pastoral landscape One of Britain's greatest landscape painters, John Constable was brought up in Dedham Vale, the valley of the River Stour in Suffolk. The eldest son of a wealthy mill owner, he entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1800 at the age of 24, and thereafter committed himself to painting nature out of doors. His "six-footers," such as The Hay Wainand The Leaping Horse, were designed to promote landscape as a subject and to stand out in the Academy's Annual Exhibition. Despite this, he sold few paintings in his lifetime and was elected a Royal Academician late in his career. With texts by leading authorities on the artist, this handsome book looks at the freedom of Constable's late works and records his enormous contribution to the English landscape tradition. John Constable(1776-1837) is one of Britain's best-known artists, and is often considered one of the greatest landscape painters of all time. He was born near the River Stour in Suffolk, an area the artist depicted so frequently that it is referred to as "Constable country." Pastoral scenes were unfashionable at the time and Constable struggled to establish himself as a painter. He was finally elected a Royal Academician in 1829, and in 1832, he exhibited The Opening of Waterloo Bridge--an effort 13 years in the making--at the Summer Exhibition.
Book Synopsis Looking at Antigone by : David Stuttard
Download or read book Looking at Antigone written by David Stuttard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antigone is one of the most influential and thought-provoking of all Greek tragedies. Set in a newly victorious society, where possibilities seem boundless and mankind can overcome all boundaries except death, the action is focussed through the prism of Creon, a remarkable anti-hero – a politician who, in crisis, makes a reckless decision, whose pride (or insecurity) prevents him from backing down until it is too late, and who thereby ends up losing everything. Not just the story of a girl who confronts the state, Antigone is an exploration of inherent human conflicts – between men and women, young and old, power and powerlessness, civil law and the 'unwritten laws' of nature. Lauded in Antiquity, it has influenced drama and philosophy throughout history into the modern age. With an introduction discussing the nature of the community for which Antigone was written, this collection of essays by 12 leading academics from across the world draws together many of the themes explored in Antigone, from Sophocles' use of mythology, his contemporaries' reactions and later reception, to questions of religion and ritual, family life and incest, ecology and the environment. The essays are accompanied by David Stuttard's performer-friendly, accurate and easily accessible English translation.
