Download or read book The New Khaki written by Arvind Verma and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a democratic society, police are expected to be accountable to the people they serve, upholding the rights of citizens and following due process. In India, however, political pressure in the competitive electoral arena forces the police to adopt questionable means and dubious strategies. As a hierarchical bureaucratic organization, disciplined in a military tradition and schooled in colonial traditions of deference to authority figures, India’s police personnel have effectively alienated the very people they are supposed to serve and protect. In response to the overwhelmingly bleak pessimism of researchers and analysts scrutinizing India’s police force, The New Khaki: The Evolving Nature of Policing in India highlights those unobtrusive and indirect paths toward effective transformation in spite of politicians and bureaucrats. Analyzing the obstacles to reform, the book argues forcefully and systematically to present areas of potential innovation and successful case studies. Focusing on practical and actionable options, the book examines how the use of new technology, the judiciary, and other creative administrative mechanisms can give determined police leaders the methods to change the policing system and its practices. It also provides strong evidence for the role of research and scholarship in transforming the police organization, offering illustrative examples and creative responses to endemic problems. The case studies presented here suggest that even when the powerful sections of society and those who control the police are not ready to bring changes, imaginative police leadership can find creative means to transform their organization to serve the people. The New Khaki: The Evolving Nature of Policing in India is a must-read for all those who are concerned about policing and interested in its improvement for a better world.

Download or read book Late Constable Hb written by and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On John Constable as a proto-abstractionist of pastoral landscape One of Britain's greatest landscape painters, John Constable was brought up in Dedham Vale, the valley of the River Stour in Suffolk. The eldest son of a wealthy mill owner, he entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1800 at the age of 24, and thereafter committed himself to painting nature out of doors. His "six-footers," such as The Hay Wainand The Leaping Horse, were designed to promote landscape as a subject and to stand out in the Academy's Annual Exhibition. Despite this, he sold few paintings in his lifetime and was elected a Royal Academician late in his career. With texts by leading authorities on the artist, this handsome book looks at the freedom of Constable's late works and records his enormous contribution to the English landscape tradition. John Constable(1776-1837) is one of Britain's best-known artists, and is often considered one of the greatest landscape painters of all time. He was born near the River Stour in Suffolk, an area the artist depicted so frequently that it is referred to as "Constable country." Pastoral scenes were unfashionable at the time and Constable struggled to establish himself as a painter. He was finally elected a Royal Academician in 1829, and in 1832, he exhibited The Opening of Waterloo Bridge--an effort 13 years in the making--at the Summer Exhibition.

Book Synopsis Looking at Antigone by : David Stuttard
Download or read book Looking at Antigone written by David Stuttard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antigone is one of the most influential and thought-provoking of all Greek tragedies. Set in a newly victorious society, where possibilities seem boundless and mankind can overcome all boundaries except death, the action is focussed through the prism of Creon, a remarkable anti-hero – a politician who, in crisis, makes a reckless decision, whose pride (or insecurity) prevents him from backing down until it is too late, and who thereby ends up losing everything. Not just the story of a girl who confronts the state, Antigone is an exploration of inherent human conflicts – between men and women, young and old, power and powerlessness, civil law and the 'unwritten laws' of nature. Lauded in Antiquity, it has influenced drama and philosophy throughout history into the modern age. With an introduction discussing the nature of the community for which Antigone was written, this collection of essays by 12 leading academics from across the world draws together many of the themes explored in Antigone, from Sophocles' use of mythology, his contemporaries' reactions and later reception, to questions of religion and ritual, family life and incest, ecology and the environment. The essays are accompanied by David Stuttard's performer-friendly, accurate and easily accessible English translation.
